In recognition of his service to the board, Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe presented Schreffler with framed print of a work by famed wildlife artist Ned Smith. In accepting the gift, Schreffler addressed the board and others attending todays meeting in Harrisburg, speaking of the pleasure with which he served the Game Commission and the sportsmen of Pennsylvania. The commission, he said, truly is an agency run for and by sportsmen. Thank you all for this life-enhancing experience, he said. The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners said its no longer necessary to assess a late fee because the automated system of selling licenses is easier to administer. Under the old system, ample time was needed to create agents accounts and coordinate the shipment of hunting licenses before the start of the new license year. With the automated system, licenses no longer are shipped to agents. In giving approval to the matter, the commissioners said continuing to assess the late fee created an unnecessary burden on issuing agents. While the late fee was removed, the March 31 deadline by which agents are to apply ahead of the new license year (which typically begins July 1) remains unchanged. The commissioners also added language to the amendment stating theres no guarantee that those who apply late to become agents will be approved for sales by the July 1 start of the license year. The amendment also clarifies that rebates offered to issuing agents based on the number of licenses sold are given only for sales during their first license year, and not thereafter. DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS FRESHER CELERY I found an easy way to keep celery fresh and usable for quite a long time. I fill a tall container with water and place my cut celery sticks inside. Also, it wrecked my fingernails! I found a solution. Now, I place a toothpick at the end of the roll, right before I cut, and I always can find the end of the roll. Does your child eat sand? I spoke with a group that included some childcare providers. Our topic was Building on Strengths-Confronting Challenges, and then I asked the group to share some of their stories. One childcare provider told the story of how one of her students, an autistic child, sat down in the sand box and began eating the sand...a lot of sand. So his teacher called his mother. Now the teacher wasnt upset; she knew how things would turn out, but she really wanted the mother to know then rather than waiting until the end of the day, afraid that she would get upset. As it turns out, the mother of this autistic child wasnt upset at all. Instead she said when told about the sand, Wonderful! Hes discovered textures! Remember this childs mother as you build on your strengths and confront your challenges...while you make a positive life.

COMMISSION SETS MEETING DATES, OKs PEREGRINE PLAN The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners tentatively scheduled a host of upcoming meetings, to be confirmed at a later date. The commissioners gave approval to a working group meeting on Monday, Aug. 12 in Harrisburg. Meanwhile, the September meeting is set tentatively for Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Delmont, Pa., in the Southwest Region. The January meeting has been scheduled for Jan. 26 through 28 in Harrisburg. In other business: The commissioners gave unanimous approval to a peregrine falcon management plan crafted by the commissions Bureau of Wildlife Management and covering the years 2013 through 2022. Commissioners noted they discussed the plan at a previous working group meeting, and saw a presentation on the plan during Mondays meeting. f

HARRISBURG - The mailboxes of many of the states dove hunters soon will be flush with surveys the Pennsylvania Game Commission would like to see them complete and return. The National Dove Hunter Survey - a cooperative effort by state fish and wildlife agencies, all four of the nations flyway councils and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - will be arriving at the homes of many hunters in the coming days and weeks. A random sample of dove hunters will receive the survey, and will be asked about their experiences and opinions on dove hunting. Topics include hunter characteristics, time spent hunting, constraints to hunting, and thoughts about potential effects of spent lead from hunting ammunition on mourning doves and other wildlife. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe said wildlife agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service want to consider hunters opinions and preferences about seasons whenever possible. He said he survey results will complement science-based information for the management and conservation of migratory birds. If you are a dove hunter and receive one of these surveys, we encourage you to complete it and return it as soon as possible, Roe said. Thats the only way to ensure the opinions of Pennsylvanias hunters are included in this national survey. There are more than 1 million dove hunters nationally, with seasons in 42 states. Recent statistics for Pennsylvania show an estimated 16,700 hunters harvesting nearly 200,000 doves annually. Mailings of the National Dove Hunter Survey began on June 20, and survey results will be compiled by the end of the year.
