Welcome

The Cambridge Union is the worlds oldest student debating society, and the largest student society in Cambridge. From pop stars to politicians, activists to academics, celebrities to community leaders, the Union brings together leading figures from a variety of backgrounds to engage with students about the most topical issues that affect us today. It is part of the lifeblood of Cambridge. With world-champion competitive debaters, access schemes aimed at bringing debating and public speaking to schoolchildren across the UK, its own library and rare books collection and the cheapest student bar in central Cambridge, the Union really does offer something for everyone. If you are searching for a single society that will set your University experience apart, look no further than the Cambridge Union: an iconic platform for discussing contemporary issues at the heart of our historic university.

Joanna Mobed President, Michaelmas 2013

History
The Cambridge Union Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious student societies in the world. It is the largest student society in Cambridge attracting some of the Universitys most intelligent and articulate students. Since 1815 the Union has been committed to the principles of free speech and of fair, open and honest debate. Founded at a time when the university authorities attempted to restrict these freedoms, the Union remains the centre of controversial and serious debate within the University of Cambridge. The Union has an illustrious past and has provided an arena for students to hone their intellectual skills, many of whom have progressed to become world leaders in their chosen field. Both Prince Charles and Earl Mountbatten of Burma made speeches in the Union Chamber during their time at university. Alumnae include cabinet ministers, such as Michael Howard, Kenneth Clarke and Douglas Hurd, as well as politicians from across the political spectrum including Lord Smith, Lord Harris and Baroness Hayman. Union Committee members have also gone on to prominence in the world of broadcasting and literature. Arianna Huffington, Clare Balding, Robert Harris and Edward Stourton all worked at the Union during their time in Cambridge. The Unions rich history has always attracted world famous individuals and boasts the Most Rev. Desmond Tutu, His Excellency President Jalal Talabani and Professor Stephen Hawking amongst its Honorary Members. The Union has been discussing, debating, and shaping the issues that matter for the last two hundred years. Understanding how concepts work, challenging ideas and having a frank discussion is the bedrock upon which our society is founded. It is the responsibility of the Union to ensure that these ideals are protected and nurtured for years to come.

Speakers
Without a doubt, the most extraordinary aspect of the Cambridge Union is the opportunity it gives members to meet, listen to and question the most influential public figures in the world. President Ronald Reagan came to discuss the legacy of his presidency within a year of departing office, while Enoch Powell faced fierce criticism from students for his views on immigration. At the height of apartheid South African President Frederick de Klerk informed members how he planned to end segregation. Sir Winston Churchill spoke about the problems facing post-war Britain, while Michael Howard addressed students concerning the future of the Conservative party. Last term, David Moyes spoke merely days after becoming manager of Manchester United FC. The Union has a proud history of attracting the most prominent individuals of their respective fields to address our members. Politics The Union consistently hosts the biggest names from front-line politics Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher, Alec Douglas-Home, Ted Heath, Harold MacMillan and John Major have all spoken in our world-famous debating

chamber. Amongst the hundreds of international figures to speak, foreign Heads of State are particularly well represented: US President Theodore Roosevelt, President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf, the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl have all spoken here. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi addressed the chamber via video-link from Libya. The Prime Minister of Iraq Jalal Talabani spoke about the Iraq war at the height of post-war controversy. More recently, ex-London mayor Ken Livingstone, Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, ex-Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell, Labour stalwart Tony Benn, Lord Michael Heseltine, Hazel Blears and David Blunkett have been challenged and questioned by Union members. Former Chancellors of the Exchequer Lord Norman Lamont and Lord Geoffrey Howe, ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats Lord Paddy Ashdown, ex-Labour Leader Lord Neil Kinnock and the last Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Chris Patten, have also spoken. Labour front bencher David Miliband, American Ambassador Louis Susman, Tory heavyweight David Davis, Liberal Democrat Vince Cable, First Minister of Northern Ireland Rev. Ian Paisley, UKIP leader Nigel Farage, and exHead of the IMF Dominique Strauss Kahn have also addressed the Union in recent years. Film & Entertainment From stage to screen, the Union has hosted the worlds greatest actors, actresses, comedians and media personalities. In just the last few years we have heard from Brian Blessed, Sir Michael Parkinson and Sir David Frost. Dame Judi Dench, Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, Bradley Whitford, Rupert Everett, Hugh Bonneville, and Zoe Wanamaker

have spoken about their careers in film and theatre, while directors Oliver Stone and the legendary Clint Eastwood have shared their perspectives on working behind the camera. James Bond (Sir Roger Moore), Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart) and Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellan) have all delighted our members, and comedians Dara OBriain, Rob Brydon, Bill Oddie, Jo Brand and Dame Edna Everage left the audience in stitches with their speeches. - Arts & Journalism Quentin Blake, Neil Gaiman and Tracy Chevalier have addressed members concerning their writing - Bill Bryson entertained with tales of his travels, while Andy McNab thrilled with stories of his life behind enemy lines. Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Daily Mail columnist Peter Hitchins and Private Eye editor Ian Hislop all gave contrasting views on the modern media. Composer Steven Sondheim, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, legendary Queen guitarist Brian May and LSO principal conductor Valery Gergiev perfectly exemplify the range of guest speakers the Union enjoys.

Sciences and Academics The Union has always made a point of inviting the worlds foremost academics. Stephen Hawking, Professor James Watson, Lord Robert Winston and Sir Roger Penrose have all spoken. Prominent atheist Richard Dawkins, feminist Germaine Greer, civil rights activists Rev. Jesse Jackson and Shami Chakrabati, philosophers A C Grayling, Peter Singer and Michael Sandel, economist Dambisa Moyo, judges Lord Philips and Justice Antonin Scalia, biologists Steve Jones, Susan Greenfield, Tim Hunt and sociologist Anthony Giddens have all addressed enthusiastic audiences. Sport Over the last few years, members have quizzed Sebastian Coe about the 2012 Olympics, and speakers have included paralympian Dame Tanni GreyThompson, Formula 1 drivers Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss, boxer Joe Calzaghe, cyclist Mark Cavendish, rugby players Gavin Hastings, James Haskell and Gareth Thomas and former England football manager Fabio Capello. Dine with the Guest Speakers Dining with the speakers that feature in our debates is a privilege reserved exclusively to Union members, and after debate, the speakers continue the discussion with the students over a drink in the Union bar.

Debates
The Cambridge Union Society was founded on the principles of free speech and the art of debate. Our Thursday night debates are famous the world over for the figures they attract, the arguments they provoke and the variety of topics they discuss. Every week, experts in their fields congregate in the Union chamber to debate motions from the heavyweight political Israel is a rogue state and Islam is a threat to the West, through to salient social issues such as Britain is still a racist country and The only obstacle to female success is female ambition. We also host less typical debates, like the hilarious termly Footlights debate, the Valentines Day debate, Sex has lost all meaning and the though-provoking motion science has an undeserved monopoly on truth. In the last few years alone, Stephen Fry has debated Radio One DJ Kissy Sell Out on the relevance of classical music, David Blunkett and Nigel Farage have joined forces to take on the record of the Coalition, and Richard Dawkins has gone head-to-head with former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to question the place of religion in the modern world. Union debates give members the unique opportunity to engage at every single stage. Members can invite speakers, offer floor points during the debate, and frequently have the opportunity to meet the speakers over post-debate drinks.

In addition, the weekly Emergency Debates which precede the main debate consist of exclusively student speakers, and give members a chance to debate topical issues in a more informal setting. In the face of criticism, the Union retains its unique and firm commitment to freedom of speech. When Marine le Pen came in the wake of achieving 18% of the vote in the French general election, multiple groups demonstrated against her views. Julian Assange gave his first post-Wikileaks public speech at the Cambridge Union Society, and Dominique Strauss-Khan was questioned on his court controversy during his speech on global economics. In the last year alone, the Union has also hosted both the Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors. Earlier in the Unions history, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and FW De Klerk made appearances soon after the release of Nelson Mandela to reflect on the future of South Africa. After the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Tony Hayward gave an exclusive talk in the Union chamber. At the height of the Kosovo crisis, leaders from all sides came together to discuss a route to peace in a forum that was broadcast across the world. 2015 will mark the two hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the Union two hundred years of offering an unparalleled independent forum for students to scrutinise some of the worlds most influential and controversial figures.

Competitive Debating
The Cambridge Union Society runs one of the most high-profile and popular competitive debating programmes in the world. Having won the English National Championships twice in the last four years, reached the final of the European Debating Championship three years running and trained many of the top speakers at the World Debating Championships the Union is renowned for its success in competitive debating. You need no prior experience to start improving your public speaking skills and our workshops and competitions are open to all Union members. Debating for the Cambridge Union Society equips participants with an incredible set of skills which are extremely useful in a variety of contexts beyond the traditional British Parliamentary format of debating. We run programmes for beginners through to national and international-level competitors, so youre sure to find something that will suit your interests and abilities. Every Wednesday, from 7.00-9.00pm, we run beginner workshops for those who have never debated before, and practice debates for those who wish to sharpen their skills. World-class debaters from the Universities debating circuit volunteer to be our mentors. Whether you wish to compete for Cambridge or simply develop your argumentation and public speaking, our debating workshops provide unparalleled training towards becoming a better speaker or debater.

Universities across the United Kingdom host debating competitions on a weekly basis. We do not simply send our best speakers, but select from a wide range of abilities in order to give as many members as possible the chance to debate. Last year, we sent over 60 speakers to competitions, and next year we hope to send even more. These competitions provide a brilliant opportunity to socialise with students whilst visiting other parts of the country. We cover the registration fees and part of your travel costs; you just need to show up, ready to debate! We also offer members the chance to debate around the globe. In the last three years we have funded trips to Beijing, New York, Istanbul, Florida, Belgrade, Manila, Botswana, and Kolkata. The Cambridge Union Society hosts debating workshops for schools across the country. Teaching in these workshops is an extremely rewarding and fun way to pass on the art of debating and develop teaching skills. Cambridge debaters also serve as judges for Cambridge Schools, the largest debating competition in the world, with over 1,200 participants last year. We offer schoolchildren from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about Cambridge and University-level debating. In Michaelmas Term, we run workshops for Union members on how to judge debates. On Friday 11th October, we will be holding our Debating Launch Event at 7.00pm. It will be open to non-members. Well have our best debaters ready to answer your questions about debating, sign-up forms for you to fill in and lots of pizza, so make sure to come along.

Membership
Why do I have to pay? Simply because the Union doesnt receive any funding from the government or the University. As a non-profit incorporated student charity, the Union is run for its members, by its members. All Union officers are unpaid. We do not offer fees to our speakers, so your membership fees go towards paying for their expenses, and towards the maintenance of the Grade II* listed building and facilities. How much does it cost? If you join before 18th October you are entitled to our discounted membership fee of 170. This works out as only 19 per term over the course of a three year degree, or about 2 per week. New members are also exclusively offered a free invitation to our Freshers Ball, the biggest social event in Freshers Week (tickets to this event are on sale to non-members for 150). Access Scheme We believe the Union should be open to all students, regardless of financial background, and we offer a significant discount for those receiving the full Cambridge Newton Trust Bursary. If you are entitled to this discount, please come into the Office to purchase full membership for the discounted fee of 90. How do I Join? Online at www.cus.org/join; the quickest, easiest way to join, and your membership card will be waiting for you in the Office when you arrive. You can also sign up in person at the Union Office, or at our stall at the Freshers Fair on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th of October. Guest Policy Whilst guest tickets are available for members to purchase, guests cannot be eligible for membership in their own right. In other words, members of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin Universities will not be admitted to Union events as guests.
