A new hot spot
Lake Geneva Cannery adds spice and avor to life
By Jessica Franzene
So far, its been a recipe for success: a unique
theme for a Lake Geneva shop. A great location.
Two enthusiastic owners and a source for some
of the tastiest sauces, condiments and preserves
in the Midwest.
Lake Geneva Cannery combines these all,
and since its opening in April, has enticed both
locals and visitors to pay a visit, sample tasty
treats, and stock their pantries with everything
from hot sauces to chutney, pickled vegetables,
rubs and everything in between.
We truly have something for everyone, Julie
and Darrel Rose said. The shop, which is located
at 120 Broad St. in the heart of downtown Lake
Geneva, offers a dazzling array of products, in-
cluding the largest collection of hot sauces youre
likely to see. (There are more than 500 labels of
hot sauces, with more coming every week.) The
sheer number and variety of these little bottles
draw many shoppers in, but even you dont cant
take the heat, theres plenty more to excite your
taste buds.
Partnering with and inspired by The
Galena Canning Co., the Roses have introduced
their own line of goods.
What makes the Galena Canning Co. and
Lake Geneva Cannery products stand apart? Lo-
cal ingredients and a dedication to quality from
the kitchen to the store shelves. Every recipe is
tested and tested again, with new and unique
avor combinations created right alongside tra-
ditional favorites. Right now, for instance, barbe-
cue sauces are ying off the shelves.
Classics are always a good bet, but current
best sellers include the re-roasted jalapeno hon-
ey BBQ sauce and the apple-hickory blend.
Whether youre cooking for the family or en-
tertaining, youll nd something to take the meal
to the next level.
The Cannerys line of salsas, a huge variety
of mustards, toppings, pickles, olives and season-
al favorites like pickled beets and dilly beans are
just some of what youll have to choose from...and
its not an easy choice. Fortunately, there are a
variety of samples offered each day to help you
narrow down the favorites.
If your tastes run more toward the sweet,
youll have to decide between jams, jellies, pre-
serves, chutneys and fruit butters, along with lo-
cal honey. If all this makes you think of
breakfast, youre in luck: Lake Geneva Cannery
also features a selection of coffees, all roasted
and blended in Galena.
Theres been a tremendous local response,
Julie said. We were inspired by the Galena Can-
ning Company because we saw how both area
people and visitors kept coming back.
It helps that the Lake Geneva Cannery is so
conveniently located, too, the Roses said. Theyre
open seven days a week and because its a fam-
ily operation, they extend their hours when the
streets of Lake Geneva are busy. And when the
summer crowds are replaced by holiday shop-
pers, they will spend more time on custom gift
baskets, something they offer yearround.
For more information on the Cannery, call
(262) 729-4017 or check them out on Facebook.

ame changes are an inevitable part of a towns history. The southeastern portion of Lake
Geneva is a good example: what once was Lake Street is now Wrigley Drive. Willow Park
is now called Flatiron Park. What we know as Seminary Park used to be Oak Park.
But some things dont change. For 51 years, the Lake Geneva Jaycees have hosted a late-summer cel-
ebration, where locals and visitors can enjoy food and refreshments, local entertainment and a carnival, all
situated right across the street from beautiful Geneva Lake (once known as Kishwauketoe).
Other than shortening it from Venetian Fest to just Venetian, the festivals name and mission have
remained unchanged. As the Jaycees biggest fundraiser, the five-day event has long been a gathering place
for families and friends.
Culminating in a lighted boat parade, as a nod to the waterway Italian city the festival is named for, Vene-
tian is a celebration of the season and of Lake Genevas nautical roots.
Over the years, the focus has also moved to the closing nights fireworks celebration. Shot over the water,
the show is visible along the lakeshore down to Library Park and beyond, making it easy to find a vantage
point for your ooohs and aaahs.
Perhaps one of the best spots to take in Venetians boat show and fireworks is the strategically located
Ferris Wheel. The ride is situated at the edge of Flatiron Park, next to the statue of iconic comic-strip
character Andy Gump. As part of the parks history, Gump has seen his share of Venetian fun along with
some summer mayhem that led to his beheading, as well as his theft.
Flatiron Park
Flatiron Park has been Gumps home since 1947. The park goes
back much longer than that; part of it was donated to Geneva Village
in 1882 by J.C. Walter. His two partners sold their two-thirds inter-
est in the three acres for about $1,300. It has been a city park since
then, but first was named for its willow trees. (There was a tendency
to name parks after trees here, but only one, Maple Park, retains its
original name.)
Flatiron is triangle-shaped, hence its current name. The property
escaped development or today it might be home to one of the citys
earlier mansions, along the lines of the nearby Baker House (originally
Redwood Cottage) or Maxwell Mansion. These two homes, which are
located east of Flatiron Park, are good examples of the structures
that were being built when Lake Geneva was first becoming a summer
haven for Chicagos elite.

Baker House
The Baker House, 327 Wrigley Drive, is a Queen Anne mansion that
was built around 1885 for Emily Baker, the widow of Robert Baker. He
was the son of Charles Baker, the first district attorney of Walworth
County. The land this house is built on was part of his compensation
for accepting the position.
At 17,000 square feet, the Baker House has 30 rooms that boast
as much attention to detail as the exterior does. Inlaid wood floors,
custom doors and patterned redwood shingles, along with carefully
crafted stained glass have all been painstakingly restored and pre-
served by the homes subsequent owners.
Its now a unique restaurant and entertainment venue, and is avail-
able for private celebrations along with being open to the public. During
Venetian Fest, the owners host a Venetian Masquerade Ball.
Emily Baker built Redwood Cottage in homage of her late husband
he died at 43 and she wanted to honor her husbands fondness for
the Geneva Lake shoreline he had grown up near.
She died in 1894 and the house was initially converted to a sani-
tarium, then was used as a dormitory for the nearby Lake Geneva Seminary for Girls.
Seminary Park
The Seminary itself had been built in the mid-1800s in what was
then Oak Park, behind the Baker House property. It was the first pri-
vate school in the region and by 1872 boasted an enrollment of 82.
According to the Lake Geneva Herald, areas of study were academic,
preparatory, music and art and higher English.
The location, as we all know, is unsurpassed for beauty and health-
fulness. The terms are reasonable and proportionate with the advan-
tages, the Herald noted.
The book Lake Geneva in Vintage Postcards mentions some of the
art students learned to paint on china and velvet.
Over the years, enrollment declined, and in 1901 the Seminary was
razed and the park was renamed for it.
Seminary Parks proximity to Flatiron Park made it a natural spot for
the Jaycees to expand Venetian Fests reach, making more room for a
bigger and better carnival.
Lake Geneva
Maple Park Historic District A sightseeing walk through this 650-acre district will highlight the architectural
trends of historic homes from the 1840s through 1920s. Many of the 140-plus residences were built during the
Victorian era and have been meticulously maintained and restored. The district also includes Pioneer Cemetery and
the Central-Denison school buildings and grounds.
PARKS
Seminary Park, Baker Street and South Lake Shore Drive. Picnicking and grilling are permitted; a playground is
available.
Flatiron Park, Wrigley Drive and Center Street. The chamber of commerce is located in the park, as are a statue
of cartoon character Andy Gump and a gazebo overlooking the lakeshore.
Maple Park, Madison and Geneva streets. A basketball court, tennis courts and a playground are available, as well
as a baseball diamond in this park, which is located in the heart of the Maple Park Historic District.
Wheel-Friendly Plaza, Dunn Field, Sage Street. A state of the art concrete skate park is open to the public at
this location, which also offers a playground, basketball court and playing eld.
Donian Park, East Main Street and lower Center Street, along the White River bank. A four-acre wetland preserve,
the park has a spacious observation deck.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE August 15, 2013
Maxwell Mansion
If visitors continue through Seminary Park after festival fun, they can view
another of Lake Genevas earliest mansions, which is located at 421 Baker St.
(And yes, the streets named after the same Baker family.)
The Italian villa-styled Maxwell Mansion (once The Oaks), was built in 1855
by prominent Chicago surgeon Philip Maxwell as a summer residence.
Maxwell is one of the founding fathers of Lake Geneva, as he nanced the
original 1837 survey that laid out the village. He and his brother James were
two of the rst seven purchasers of land here.
Dr. Maxwell, according to James Simmons annals of Lake Geneva, used
Block 35 to build a large and handsome dwelling upon a delightful spot
he had long reserved for that purpose. He and his family decided to make it
their year-round home not long after its completion, perhaps tempted by the
attention to detail both inside and out.
Marble replaces, 14-foot ceilings, gilded carved wooden moldings and an
impressive black walnut staircase are still part of the buildings appeal. The
foundation is made of two-foot-wide locally quarried granite, part of what made
it possible for the Maxwell family to endure the harsh Wisconsin winters.
Originally, the red brick exterior was accentuated by cream trim, but the building has long been painted white.
The building has passed through a few owners who have lovingly restored it, and its now open to the public for lodging
and entertainment, including teas and a cabaret.
Now known as the Maxwell Mansion, this structure and the Baker House afford visitors to Venetian fest a convenient
walking-distance tour of the grandeur that was 19th century Lake Geneva.

You could say its a passion for history thats motivated Doug Watson all these
years. Since his childhood, hes been fascinated with the American West, and now has
the museum to prove it.
On the other hand, because his specialty is making the past come alive for his
visitors, his passion might best be described as time travel.
When you visit Watsons Wild West Dinner Theater and Museum, youll walk in
the boots of Americas cowboys. Watson, dressed in full cowboy getup, guides his guests
through the adventures of historic figures, as well as the life of the archetypical cowboy.
Thousands of authentic period items, ranging from guns to toys, make the experience
come alive. As Doug guides you on a journey through the past, he incorporates his
vast knowledge of the period, mixing history with tall tales, cowboy poetry and wisdom
from Will Rogers. Both kids and adults will want to wander the museum and explore
the array of artifacts.Watsons Wild West Museum is located off Highway 12 and 67
at Potter Road, Elkhorn. The business welcomes bus tours, private parties and school
trips. For additional information, call (262) 723-7505 or visit their Web site at www.

Finding creative and affordable ways to promote your business can
be a real challenge. But little did I know how much one call to the right
team, could help us market our message. From our initial visit, I was
impressed with their enthusiastic and professional approach. Phil and his
team from ReelLifeTV really took the time to understand not just what we
do, but why we do it. After grilling him on his understanding of video
production, he patiently answered all of my questions. and made me feel
totally at ease with the process.
We really didn't know what to think the day of the shoot. As you can
imagine, we were a bit nervous. But again, their confident and comfort-
able approach made all the difference in the world. It wasn't long before
we stopped thinking about the camera and just had fun delivering our
message.
Phil & Joy focused on both the obvious and under-appreciated angles
that helped us tell a complete story. And when they left, I remember
thinking that it seemed as though they had filmed quite bit of video, and
that the time had really flown by.
About a week later, the first edit was revealed to us, and I was
thrilled! I couldn't believe how wonderfully they captured the spirit and
authenticity of our business. Connecting with our customers is some-
thing we cherish, and ReelLifeTV helped us do just that. Our response has
been awesome. I can't thank them enough for the fantastic job they did
with our initial video.
For an independent business, busting through the advertising clutter,
and finding new ways to establish personal connections with potential
customers is a huge priority. They really understood that for the team at

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE August 15, 2013
Renovations that take inventory of energy use
and strive toward efciency have grown increas-
ingly popular over the years. Homeowners fed up
with high utility bills want to conserve costs, and
there are a number of ways to revamp a home to
be more energy efcient.
The rst step in a home energy makeover is
to nd out where your home is losing money. Cer-
tain municipal and environmental agencies offer
home assessments, during which they will do a
complete walk-through of your home and high-
light areas that can be improved. Private compa-
nies also perform energy audits on a home. They
may be able to point out appliances, windows or
landscaping issues that could be compromising
the efciency of a home. These people may have
a more intimate knowledge of insulation ratings
and window efciency ratings than the average
homeowner.
In addition to having an energy audit on your
home to save money on utility bills, a profession-
al audit may make you eligible for tax incentives
and rebates. That can mean even more savings
and may even increase the value of your home.
Until a thorough energy assessment can be
made, there are some easy and relatively inex-
pensive xes any homeowner can undertake to
help improve energy efciency.
Clean air lters. Trapped dust and debris in
a lter makes furnaces and air conditioners work
harder. Once lters are free from dust, air can
blow more smoothly through the system.
Plug leaks. Air leaks could be sucking energy
out of your home and money out of your wallet.
Once you nd any leaks, you can use weather
stripping and caulking to seal up breaches and
save energy and money.
Invest in insulation. Install high-efciency
insulation in attics and between walls to prevent
energy loss and keep more warm or cool air in the
home. A well-insulated house requires less heat-
ing and cooling to keep the temperature indoors
stable, and that translates to less money spent
on utilities.
Swap out light bulbs. Switching bulbs from
incandescent to more efcient LED or CFL bulbs
can save money in the long run.
By making a few simple changes, homeown-
er can increase their energy savings around the
house. Investing in an energy audit and makeover
can pinpoint key areas that need improvement.
Give your home an energy makeover
For more storage, think outside the box
Cozy, quaint homes at-
tract many home buyers and
renters. Be it a cottage-style
house or a studio apartment,
smaller living spaces often
involve getting creative with
storage.
People live in a smaller
homes for a variety of rea-
sons. Some choose to live
in a smaller home so they
can be right in the thicks of
things in a city or urban cen-
ter. Others scale back on liv-
ing space in an effort to save
money. But storage space in
small quarters is often at a
premium, and thinking cre-
atively is a necessity to keep
the home tidy and items out
of view.
When the outdoors isnt
beckoning, you can devote
all of your attention to ad-
dressing storage issues in
your home. To begin, take
inventory of what you have,
going through your pos-
sessions and determining
what can stay and what can
go. Part with anything you
havent used in quite some
time.
The next step is to sort
items and get organized.
Then you can nd a place
for everything. For example,
if you have a dozen bath
towels but only one sauce
pot, you will need to nd
more room for linens than
kitchen cookware. You may
need to borrow space from
one area of the home to give
to another area.
Add shelves. Increase
cabinet and closet space by
adding shelves into them.
This may double or even
triple the amount of usable
space, especially if you cus-
tomize the shelving to t
storage containers you use
to store everything from
shoes to craft items.
Opt for dual-purpose
furniture. Benches with lids
that lift up and sofas that
convert into guest beds are
just a few of the many ways
you can keep a small home
neat and increase storage
space. An ottoman is a great
place to store extra blankets
and linens, while a trunk or
crate with a sturdy top can
be used in lieu of a tradition-
al coffee table to keep books
or board games.
Think vertically. When
oor space is at a premium,
you may need to look up for
storage. Frequently used
pots and pans can be hung
from a decorative rack in
your kitchen. Use magnets
on jars to store a spice rack
on the wall near the stove.
Racks above cabinets or on
doors can be used to store
everything from shoes to
jewelry to toiletries. Shelv-
ing in childrens rooms can
store lesser used toys away
from the oor.
Take advantage of oddly
shaped crevices. If you have
space under a staircase or
a spot by a dormer or in an
attic eave, use the space to
store items. You may need
to get creative, such as add-
ing a door and small closet
into the staircase, but such
spaces make practical stor-
age areas and add character
to a home.
Use see-through storage
containers. Many people nd
that plastic storage bins are
neater and more stackable
than boxes. See-through
bins enable you to quickly
nd items so that you are not
searching around the house
for lost items and creating a
bigger mess along the way.
Make use of space be-
neath your bed. There likely
is ample room to store more
things than just dust bun-
nies beneath your bed. A bed
frame with built-in drawers
is the perfect place to keep
bed linens and out-of-season
clothes.
Opt for an armoire. Ar-
moires are not exclusive to
bedrooms. Armoires can be
used in dining spaces or in
dens to store items out of
sight.
Improve storage in the
bathroom. Try to choose a
vanity that has under-the-
sink storage so you will have
a place to store some toilet-
ries. Home improvement
centers sell cabinets and
etageres that can be placed
above the toilet tank as a
storage space for bathroom
items. In the shower, hang a
second tension-loaded show-
er curtain rod on the inside
of the shower enclosure that
can be used to hold bags of
kids bath toys and other toi-
letries, keeping them off the
tub ledges.
