Introduction in Greys Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy is the series that made me dependent such forms of entertainment. It's a series that makes you go beyond the action itself and see the real theme of the film: the relationship between people, real connections that form a collective compromise you accept, love, hate, fight for life, dedication and passion you put in when you do what you like. Grey's Anatomy is one of my favorite series. It has everything needed, beginning with comedy and finishing with drama. The characters are so well designed that there is a big chance of finding yourself in one of them. I like very much and the medical cases and patient stories. Although some situations are sometimes exaggerated, most times Grey's Anatomy is very realistic. The psychology of the characters is captivating, there are unusual adventures, drastic changes of situation, a deadly scenario and literally and figuratively, and over the years the experience at the hospital in Seattle, with medical staff; you can see dramas, joys, the road to happiness or the disillusionment of heroes with scalpel. Grey `s Anatomy is a show that deserves to be seen for learning to value the life and truly understand also many efforts made doctors to save a patient. The story itself and the quality of the episodes have been used by other production, but the actors certainly have surpassed all expectations of any other series of its kind.

CHAPTER I About Greys Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama television series created by Shonda Rhimes. The series premiered on March 27, 2005 on ABC; since then, eight seasons have aired. The series follows the lives of interns, residents and their mentors in the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle, Washington, as they struggle to complete their medical training and maintain personal lives. Despite being set in Seattle, the show is primarily filmed in Los Angeles, California. Grey's Anatomy tells the story of five resident doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital: Meredith Grey, Izzie Stevens, George O'Malley, Alex Karev and Cristina Yang.Until yesterday they were students; doctors today are in a world where practical training can be a matter of life and death. If they "survive" the seven years of bittersweet ordeal of Grace Hospital, they will become surgeons. You must first pass through the most difficult surgical residency program west of Harvard, a "basic" training for new recruits of exceptional medical system. The series focuses on Meredith Grey, first year resident at the hospital. A woman trying to live a normal life with a job makes it impossible to have a normal life. In addition to her relationship with
4

neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd and best friend, Cristina Yang, the show explores the relationship with colleagues and other doctors around. Each episode presents various medical cases and personal dramas of the doctors at Seattle Grace with Dr. Richard Webber to lead the department of surgery. The five interns try to form friendships in this stressful and competitive environment, where you must rely on each other. Meredith's medical ambition is overshadowed by a troubling secret. Her mother, an accomplished surgeon in the past, is now struggling with a difficult and devastating disease. Cristina is a study in contradiction, extremely ambitious and an iron will, she avoids any favor in order to succeed on her own. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens is the poor girl from a small town who, though she paid the money in medical studies modeling career, still struggling with self-esteem. George O'Malley is sweet boy, but uncertain, the neighbor who manages to say or do the wrong thing at times inappropriate. Although it is attractive to women, he is treated as "one side". And Alex Karev, the intern middle class, that other house loves to hate, he do his job with pride and ambition. Trainees are coordinated by a team of doctors determined to make them perfect in exceptional surgeons or to "destroy". Miranda Bailey, a senior internal charge with their training, is so strict that her nickname is "Nazi." Derek Shepherd is a very capable surgeon, who feels a strong sexual attraction, but prohibited for Meredith. Preston Burke's arrogance is his second advantage after handling the scalpel. Who oversee all is Dr. Richard Webber, Seattle Grace Hospital father and head of the department of surgery at all absurd. Grey's Anatomy follows the struggles young people to be doctors and doctors who struggle to remain human. It is a drama full of seasoned medical training intensity with fun lives and far from perfect for trainees who will discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life is only in shades of gray.

Production
Shonda Rhimes is currently the creator, executive producer and head writer of Grey's Anatomy. The series debuted as a midseason replacement on March 27, 2005. The series focuses on the surgical staff at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle, Washington. The series features an ensemble cast with Ellen Pompeo serving as titular character Meredith Grey, who provides narration for a majority of the series' episodes. On May 16, 2006, ABC announced plans to relocate Grey's Anatomy from Sunday evenings to Thursdays in order to anchor the network's Thursday evening programming, by airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST. As Thursday has historically been the most competitive programming night among American broadcast networks, the announced schedule change for the series has been viewed by media analysts as another vote of confidence in the series from ABC. The seventh season ended on May 18, 2011 and returned for an eighth season which aired on September 22, 2011. The title Grey's Anatomy was devised as a play on words: a reference to both Henry Gray's medical textbook Gray's Anatomy, and character Meredith Grey. Fisher Plaza, which is the headquarters building for the media company Fisher Communications and Fisher's ABC affiliated KOMO radio and television stations for Seattle, is used for some exterior shots of Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, such as air ambulances landing on the KOMOTV newscopter's helipad. This puts Seattle Grace conveniently close to the Space Needle (which is directly across the street from Fisher Plaza), the Seattle Monorail, and other local landmarks. However, the hospital used for most other exterior and many interior shots is not in Seattle; these scenes are shot at the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in North Hills, California.

Soundtrack
Mark Kimson of The Guardian has credited Grey's Anatomy with popularizing the "songtage", or musical montage segments. The series' first episode featured The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night". Emilana Torrini wrote an original piece for an episode, while other artists including Taylor Swift have given Grey's Anatomy exclusive rights to the first play of a track from a new album. Sales of The Fray's "How to Save a Life" grew by nearly 300% after the track was used in Grey's Anatomy, while digital downloads of Lenka's "Trouble Is a Friend" similarly rose after it featured on the show. The American profile of Northern Irish band Snow Patrol increased after their single "Chasing Cars" was used in Grey's Anatomy. Lead singer Gary Lightbody was initially uncertain about licensing a song for the soundtrack, but has since conceded that the publicity had a positive effect. The show's main title theme during its first two seasons is an excerpt of Cosy in the Rocket", by British artist Psapp. It is featured on the soundtrack album released via ABC corporate cousin Hollywood Records on September 27, 2005.. A second soundtrack, featuring songs from the series' second season, was released September 12, 2006, followed by a third soundtrack with music from the third season. Following the musical episode, the Grey's Anatomy Musical Soundtrack was released. Volume four of the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack was released subsequently. Music plays a key role in the creation of Greys Anatomy. Each episode of the show is uniquely named after a song. The episode titles usually have something to do with the theme or moral of the episode's storyline and this moral is reproduced by the voice-overs heard at the beginning and end of each episode. Many artists featured on Greys Anatomy include Meiko, Adele, Beck, Tegan and Sara, Kate Havnevik, Risn Murphy, Snow Patrol, Kanye West, Interpol, Maria Taylor, Mat Kearney, Medeski Martin & Wood, Ingrid Michaelson, Joshua Radin, The Hereafter, Jem, Brandi Carlile, Anya Marina, Erin McCarley, Duffy, Corinne Bailey Rae, Chris Garneau, Devics, KT Tunstall, Sia, Anna Nalick and Meaghan Smith. Icelandic singler Emiliana Torrini specifically wrote the song Beggar's Prayer for use in the show. On the Season 5 premire, Taylor Swift debuted "White Horse" from her sophmore album, Fearless.

Location

Seattle Grace Hospital (SGH) is the central location where Grey's Anatomy is set. It has appeared in all seasons and has been the host of many famous doctors. There have been patients that travel across the country to receive the best medical treatment from the leading surgeons in their field and the hospital is reportedly the best in Washington State. In recent times its reputation has dropped, now ranked the twelfth best teaching hospital in the country. It was established in 1947. After being ranked 12th in top teaching hospitals for a surgical residency program, previously ranked 3rd, and being demoted to a Level II Trauma Center, the Chief was determined to do everything in his power to restore the hospital's former glory. Surgical protocol was changed, more impressive and news grabbing, but risky, surgeries were actively encouraged and as such, were delighted when Derek and Meredith's clinical trial was featured in a medical journal following its success, being hailed as the Shepherd method. Although there was much success, some people (Derek and Bailey) felt he had changed slightly and was acting reckless. Following the changes, the building suffered severe flooding due to a plumbing leak and at the insistence of the Chief, the surgical floor would remain as normal, until a ceiling collapsed on a patient mid-surgery (although this later helped them discover a tumour). Following the appointment of Owen Hunt as head of trauma, the hospital regained its Level I Trauma Center rating. The staff works 80 hour weeks, although in the past this has been breeched, but generally 6 days a week and 50 weeks per year. Following financial difficulties, Seattle Grace Hospital merged with Mercy West Medical Center in 2009, forming the new Seattle Grace-Mercy West Hospital, based at the current site of Seattle Grace Hospital.

A spin-off of Greys Anatomy

Due to the great success of Grey's Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes decided to create a spin-off show titled Private Practice, which began airing on September 27,2007. The main character of Private Practice is Addison Montgomery and also includes Naomi Bennett, Sam Bennett, Dell Parker, Cooper Freedman, Violet Turner, Charlotte King and Pete Wilder. As of January 2012, four soundtrack discs have been released, as well as a video game based on the show. So far, all seasons to date have been released on DVD, with seasons four, five, six, seven, and eight available on Blu-ray. Two web is odes series have also been made, Seattle Grace: On Call and Seattle Grace: Message of Hope each with six parts. Private Practice is a show that is originated in the famous series Grey's Anatomy, specifically Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (whom we meet in "Grey's Anatomy"), a surgeon known for his profession, who realizes that life is not just pink, her career is on a plane and can not move smoothly at the hospital "Seattle Grace". Addison is making bags and decides to go to Santa Monica to start a new life. There she is reunited with some old friends from medicine, Naomi and Sam, married on faculty time, but just split. They offer them to join Addison's private clinic where they work.

CHAPTER II The true story

Gray's Anatomy is an English-language human anatomy textbook originally written by Henry Gray. Earlier editions were called Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, but the book's name is commonly shortened to, and later editions are titled, Gray's Anatomy. The book is widely regarded as an extremely influential work on the subject, and has continued to be revised and republished from its initial publication in 1858 to the present day. The 40th (and 150th-year anniversary) edition of the book was published in 2008.

Origins
The British anatomist Henry Gray was born in 1827. He studied the development of the endocrine glands and spleen and in 1853 was appointed Lecturer on Anatomy at St George's Hospital Medical School in London. In 1855, he approached his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter with his idea to produce an inexpensive and accessible anatomy textbook for medical students. Dissecting unclaimed bodies from workhouse and hospital mortuaries through the Anatomy Act of 1832, the two worked for 18 months on what would form the basis of the book. Their work was first released in 1858 in England by the publisher J.W. Parker. It was dedicated by Gray to Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, 1st Baronet. An imprint of this English first edition was published in the United States in 1859, with slight alterations. Gray prepared a second, revised edition, which was published in the United Kingdom in 1860, also by J.W. Parker. However, Gray died the following year, at the age of 34, having contracted
10

smallpox while treating his nephew (who survived). His death had come just three years after the initial publication of his Anatomy Descriptive and Surgical. Even so, the work on his much-praised book was continued by others. Longman's publication reportedly began in 1863, after their acquisition of the J.W. Parker publishing business. This coincided with the publication date of the third British edition of Gray's Anatomy. Successive British editions of Gray's Anatomy continued to be published under the Longman, and more recently Churchill Livingstone/Elsevier imprints, reflecting further changes in ownership of the publishing companies over the years.

American editions
The full American rights were purchased by Blanchard and Lea, who published the first of twenty-five distinct American editions of Gray's Anatomy on June 18, 1908. Lea & Febiger continued publishing the American editions until the company was sold in 1990. The newest, 40th edition of Gray's Anatomy was published on 26 September 2008 by Elsevier under the Churchill Livingstone imprint in both print and on-line versions. The senior editor of this book and accompanying website is Professor Susan Standring, who is Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at King's College London. The two most recent editions differ from all previous editions in an important respect: They present anatomical structures by their regional anatomy (i.e. ordered according to what part of the body the structures are located in e.g. the anatomy of the bones, blood vessels and nerves, etc. of the upper extremity is described in one place). All previous editions of Gray's Anatomy were organized by systemic anatomy (i.e. there were separate sections for the body's entire skeletal system, entire circulatory system and entire nervous system, etc.). The editors of the 39th edition acknowledged the validity of both approaches, but nevertheless switched to regional anatomy by popular demand. Older, out-of-copyright editions of the book continue to be reprinted and sold. On the World-Wide Web in particular, there are numerous offers for older editions. Unfortunately it is not always clear which (British or American) edition these books are republications of. Many seem to be reprints of the 1901 (probably U.S.) edition. Also on the World-Wide Web, there are several sites where various older versions can be read online. Although older editions may serve historic and
11

artistic uses because their companion illustrations and anatomical cross sections are renowned for their rustic and often haunting presentation, they no longer represent an up-to-date anatomical understanding, as much less was known at the time. Henry Gray wrote the original version of Gray's Anatomy with an audience of medical students and physicians in mind, especially surgeons. For many decades however, precisely because Gray's textbook became such a classic, successive editors made major efforts to preserve its position as possibly the most authoritative text on the subject in the English language. Toward this end, a longterm strategy appears to have been to make each edition come close to containing a fully comprehensive account of the anatomical medical understanding available at the time of publication. Given the explosion of medical knowledge in the 20th century, it is easily appreciated that this led to a vast expansion of the book, which threatened to collapse under its own weight in a metaphorical and physical sense. From the 35th edition onward, increased efforts were made to reverse this trend and keep the book readable by students. Nevertheless, the 38th edition contained 2,092 pages in large format the highest page count of any and an increase from the 35th edition, which had 1,471 pages. The current 40th edition has 1,576 pages. Newer editions of Gray's Anatomy and even several recent older ones are still considered about the most comprehensive and detailed textbooks on the subject. Despite the aforementioned efforts to keep Gray's Anatomy readable by students, when the 39th edition was published, students were identified as a secondary market for the book, and companion publications such as Gray's Anatomy for Students, Gray's Atlas of Anatomy and Gray's Anatomy Review have also been published in recent years.

CHAPTER III Characters

Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo

Ellen Pompeo was born on November 10, 1969. She is an actress, known for playing the role of Meredith Grey on the ABC, Grey's Anatomy. Grey It's her last name, and the series takes its name from the classic anatomy textbook Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body, commonly known as Gray's Anatomy. She narrates the show (with some exceptions), usually with voiceovers at the beginning and conclusion of the program. Meredith is the narrator of the episodes, and one of the things that people seem to enjoy so much about the show is the way that the story is told. The writing staff creates interesting scripts and quotes that will leave you thinking about different life situations that we all can relate to. For example, Meredith starts one episode in Season One by saying: "I don't know why we put things off. But if I had to guess, I'd say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of pain, fear of rejection. Sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, any decision, because what if you're wrong?" Dr. Meredith Grey is an intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. Specializing in surgery, Meredith has good medical instincts when it comes to dealing with patients. Though intelligent, she has the tendency to be disoriented especially when it comes to the matters of the heart. Her upbeat personality often results to her being a voluntary advice provider. Merediths personal life is no less complicated. She has spent her entire life trying to gain the approval of her mother, Ellis Grey, a renowned surgeon, all the while attempting to come to grips with her absentee father, Thatcher Grey. She has
13

carried her issues until adulthood, but finally received some form of affirmation from her mother when they both found themselves in a place between life and death. Consequently, when Ellis died after a long bout with Alzheimers, Meredith was able to let go peacefully and with little regret. As for her father, she continued to evade him, especially after she found out that she has several younger siblings, all whom seem to make her father happy in a way she felt she never could. However, her mothers death prompted her to reconnect with her estranged father and stepmother, and for the first time in her life, began to feel the wounds healing. She began a love affair with Dr. Derek Shepherd the night before she began her career as an intern, not knowing he was a surgeon at the hospital. She falls in love with him only to discover he is married when his wife Addison comes to join the staff at Seattle Grace. She shares her house, which once belonged to her mother, with fellow intern Izzie. George used to live with her as well, but moved out following his disastrous one night stand with Meredith. A talented young doctor and a graduate of Dartmouth College, Meredith frequently battles self-doubt and mild depression over the respective situations with her mother and Derek. In Season Two, Meredith began a relationship with Finn, a veterinarian played by Chris O'Donnell, but had an affair with Derek in the season finale. In the beginning of Season Three, she decided she wanted to be with Derek, even if Finn was the better guy. Ellis Grey passed away mid-way through the third season of Grey's Anatomy, and Meredith nearly did the same during a three-episode arc in which the doctors attended to a ferry disaster and she almost drowned. Fortunately, Derek and the rest of the doctors were able to save her. With her stepmother, Susan, also dying inexplicably in the past year, Meredith is once again shrouded in self-doubt, with her relationship with Derek in limbo, entering Season Four. The love between her and Derek is the vital element of her heart, the energy source that keeps the flame of love burning. Meredith is exactly the mistress who knows his wife but fight for her love. Meredith is XXI century woman, a woman who loves with passion and builds a career in a world where life is above all. Sometimes is talking with Cristina or is giving a party between girls. Meredith fights for her career and ignore others eyes and prejudices, continuing his relationship with Derek.
14

The Patients
If you are a patient in Seattle Grace, the good news is that you have a pretty high chance of surviving. There is also a good chance that the doctors there will do cool stuff, like sew your dismembered arm on to your leg to keep it alive until it's ready for transplant, or ingeniously grow you a new liver using only some discarded scraps of meat they found in the lunchroom. However, you risk certain death if: Your recovery occurs early in that week's scheduled drama, and you unwisely celebrate your recovery too soon, with tragically ironic results. For example, if your wife has just been cured of brain cancer but the episode's only ten minutes in, it's not looking good. Your bedside family members treat the doctors too rudely, thus putting themselves on the road to comeuppance You are romantically involved with one of the hospital's doctors, who all carry around them the pall of death The doctor seeing you has an important lesson to learn that week about hubris

Final thoughts

Interest of public health series in 2005 gave birth to a new drama in the everyday life of a team of trainees and supervisors at Seattle Grace Hospital season season progresses revealing both professional drama and problems in their lives. Created by Shonda Rhimes Grey's Anatomy series has now reached record season 8 and has 4 Emmy and two Golden Globe awards. A series that I learned quite a lot, a show where the focus and personal lives of doctors which is rather "stormy" and appeals to human and every spectator serving our spicy details of doctors life feel mixed with medical cases. Residents and surgeons in Grey's Anatomy have captured the imagination of millions of viewers of which most were not yet interested in medicine. As an oncologist explain some procedures in the series are more difficult to achieve in real life. To keep the story a float reality show producers have revealed in a few years ago the script was written by a doctor who helps research and discover cases then appear in episodes of Grey's Anatomy. It is an exceptional series of "art surgery" in some cases ingenious of the most horrific accidents and events that we all may face, a show about love and relationships also difficult and flagrant of residents and physicians-surgeons, a revolution in the scenario, some controversial, ambitious, with some unusual habits, the past will become not easy to tell and love and friends, replies, intrigue and deeds of the law and drugs that will cause laughter and crying. Grey's Anatomy is a rebellious and innovative story, a radical transformation of the image they had of the medical profession.
