Using Equation Editor and Graphs in ExamView Assessment Suite

ExamView Test Generator includes a full-featured equation editor that is available when you enter/edit
questions. The equation editor gives you the ability to lay out complex equations using over one hundred
mathematical symbols, dozens of mathematical templates or structures, and multiple formatting options. In
addition, the equation editor fully supports variables and dynamic content. Equations can be entered in a matter
of minutes using this easy-to-use, intuitive interface.
To enter a new equation:
1. Position the cursor where you want the equation to appear in the question or narrative.
2. Choose Equation from the Insert menu.

3. The equation editor dialog will appear. You will see a flashing cursor in a dotted box. The box
represents a slot .
4. Across the top of the screen, you can see two toolbars. The topmost toolbar (as presented below) shows
a variety of operators, mathematical symbols, Greek characters, and character accents. To learn how to
insert symbols into an equation, review the topic entitled Inserting Symbols in an Equation.
5. Under the symbol toolbar, you can see the template toolbar. A template is used to arrange slots to form
parts of a mathematical equation. To learn how to insert mathematical templates into an equation,
review the topic entitled Inserting Templates in an Equation.

To insert a graph:
1. Position the cursor at the location where you want to insert the cartesian graph.
2. Choose Graph/Cartesian from the Insert menu.

3. A cartesian graph with default properties will be inserted, and the Format Graph – Cartesian dialog
will be displayed.
4. There are three tabs in this dialog that allow you to format the graph in different ways.
The Functions tab lets you add, edit, and delete items from the graph. These items include f(x), f(y),
Parabola, Circle, Ellipse, Hyperbola, Point(x, y), Segment, Polynomial, Parametric, Normal Curve,
Picture, Shape, Pie Chart, Text Box, and Compound.
5. With the Functions tab displayed, click on the pop-up menu and select the type of item you want to add
to the graph. Click the New button.

6. To edit existing items on the graph, highlight the description of the item and click the Edit button (or
simply double-click the description of the item).

7. To delete an existing item from the graph, highlight the description of the item and click the Delete
button. Deleting an item automatically applies changes to the graph.
8. To change the order that the items on the graph are displayed, click the item you want to reorder and
drag it to the correct position. Reordering items automatically applies changes to the graph.
9. The Axes tab lets you add change attributes of the horizontal and vertical axes such as the scale (units
per tick), ticks per inch, and line styles.
10. With the Axes tab displayed, enter labels for the horizontal and vertical axes or choose to leave the
labels blank. By default, the labels are x and y. Click the Font buttons to set the font characteristics of
the labels. The font characteristics used for the axes labels are also used for the tick labels.
11. Set the scale (units per tick) for the each axis. Units per tick must be greater than zero.
12. Set the ticks per inch for each axis. Values must be between 1 and 50.
13. Set the ticks per label for each axis. Values must be between 1 and 99.
14. Set each axis width. You can choose to hide the axes altogether, or display each axis with a thin or a
thick line.
15. Set the axis colors. To change the color of the axes labels or the tick mark labels, use the Font buttons.
16. By default, each axis shows tick marks and tick-mark labels. You can choose to show or hide these
using the Show tick marks and Label tick marks check boxes.
17. Use Zoom In and Zoom Out to quickly change the units per tick for both axes. Zooming in or out
automatically applies changes to the graph.
18. The Clear button lets you quickly remove the axes labels, tick marks, tick mark labels, and background.
This is useful if you are using the graph to display a picture or shape.
19. The View tab lets you add change the size and background of the graph, and whether it is centered on a
certain value or anchored at the lower left to a certain value.
20. With the View tab displayed, enter a width, height, and baseline (in inches) for the graph. You can also
manually set these values from the editing dialog by clicking and dragging the resize handles.
21. Choose a background style for the graph. The background can be blank, dotted, or lined. If you choose a
lined or dotted background, you can also choose a color. By default, the background is blank. Lined or
dotted backgrounds help define the coordinate system.
22. Choose to set the center or the lower left of the graph. Enter x, y coordinate values in the appropriate
section.
23. With the Web tab displayed, enter alternate text to be displayed when the student points to the graph
while taking an online test.

24. Click the Apply button at any point to see how the changes affect the graph. Click the OK button to
record your changes and close the Format Graph – Cartesian dialog.
25. Note: You may also format a number line and polar graph.
