Arsenal – Premier League Season* 2008-09

1. Manuel Almunia (Spain)

After being the understudy of Jens Lehmann for 3 seasons, Almunia has firmly
established himself as the first-choice keeper for Arsenal since season 07/08. Generally
reliable and steady in his first year of prolonged first team actions, he performed
consistently with some magnificent saves including the penalty save against Robbie
Keane at the Emirates. The Spaniard has won the trust of Wenger who gave him the no.1
jersey for the season 08/09.

Name: Manuel Almunia

Position: Goal Keeper

2. Vasiriki Abou Diaby (France)

Often being compared to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, Diaby is a strong and mobile
player, whose natural position is at the central midfield. Wenger has used him on the left
side in 07/08, although he has an eye for the goal and scored 3 times in that position
including a stunner vs Derby County, his lack of pace and creativity down the left has
raised doubts on whether he can fulfil that role with competence.

3. Bacary Sagna (France)

Bacary Sagna has established himself as a first-choice right back at Arsenal after being
transferred from French club Auxerre in 2007. Strong, quick, dependable in defence and
decisive in joining attacks on the right flank, he performed impressively in his debut
season as has deservedly earned himself a place the PFA team of the year 07/08. While
being a good provider of cross where he gained 4 assists in the league games, his
apparent lack of attempts on goal means he still has rooms to explore in the offensive side
of his game. He did score his first goal for Arsenal in the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, which
also turned out to be his last game in his debut season as he was off injured.

4. Francesc Fabregas (Spain)

Being one of the first names in the team sheet for Wenger, Fabregas is the main source of
creativity for the Gunners. Skilful, dynamic and deceptively strong, the young Spaniard is
the focal point of midfield at Arsenal, and has the ability to provide passes to forwards
with pinpoint accuracy. He is also one of the main set-piece takers for Arsenal, sharing
his duties with Robin Van Persie. Cesc improved on his goal tally in season 07/08,
scoring 7 goals while assisted 20 others in the league - his place in PFA team of the
season 07/08 was indisputable. He carried his form into Euro 2008, scoring 1 goal and
assisted 3 others for the victorious Spanish national team.

5. Kolo Toure (Ivory Coast)
Kolo Toure is a versatile defender who can play in the centre or at the right, or even as a
midfielder. He has cemented his place as a center back after being used by Wenger in
various positions. Being strong, quick and committed, the Ivorian is the rock at the
Gunners defence. One weakness of Toure is that he is not particularly strong in the air
thus Gunners is sometimes prone to threat of long-balls/set-pieces. Toure does have a
tendency to push forward and shoot from long-range, and is occasionally a free-kick taker
in the 20-30 yards territory.

Name: Kolo Abib Toure

Position: Centre Back

6. Philippe Senderos (Switzerland)

Senderos is yet to claim the position as the first choice centre back at Arsenal, and he
needs to perform much better to achieve that. He has potential to turn in some one-off
world-class performances, but he is more remembered for his slack defending, reckless
tackles and inability to deal with physical players like Didier Drogba. While possessing
decent aerial ability which makes him a threat in corners/set-pieces, he has much rooms
for improvement defensively. Currently On Loan at AC Milan.

7. Tomas Rosicky (Czech Republic)

The injury-prone Czech midfielder had two stop-start seasons at Arsenal. He was bought
in 2006 as a replacement for Robert Pires, and has been used mostly as a left midfielder.
His goals per game ratio was decent (6 goals in 19 games in season 07/08), but whenever
he started to pick up his form he seemed to suffered from injury setbacks. With his skills
and ability to score brilliant goals from long ranges, few would bet against Rosicky to
finally deliver in season 08/09 - but he must stay clear of injury in order to enjoy
sustained first team actions. No Match Played this season due to Injury.
8. Samir Nasri (France)

Making his way into the France squad for the Euros and earlier being a splendid
wonderful attacking player with swift moves, Samir Nasri caught eyes of top managers
though Arsene Wenger scooped the star to his Gunners side. Many thinking that he will
take time to adapt to the Fast and Furious EPL style, Samir Nasri scored into his first
match just as the clock struck 4 minutes. He scored a brace at The Emirates against
Manchester United when Arsenal beat them earlier this season at home. He had been the
driving force at Arsenal though somewhat restricted at the wings.

Name: Samir Nasri

Position: Attacking Midfielder

9. Eduardo Da Silva (Croatia)

Bought from Zagreb Dynamo in 2007, Eduardo is a deadly finisher who has an
exceptional composure in 1-on-1 situations - a typical no.9 which has long been a
missing link for Arsenal after the departure of Nicholas Anelka. He opened his league
goal account with a clinical double vs Everton in December 2007. Eduardo is also a good
provider for goals and an occasional corner taker, which makes him a decent prospect for
Fantasy points. After scoring 4 goals, assisted 5 in 17 league appearances for Arsenal, his
debut season was brutally ended by a horror challenge by Birminghams Martin Taylor.
*No League Games played this season though scored 3 goals in The FA Cup.

10. William Gallas (France)

William Gallas was transferred to Arsenal in a part-deal of Ashley Cole in the opposite
direction. His goals per games as a defender was decent, with 3 goals in 31 games for
Arsenal in 07/08 - although he is also subject to some silly bookings. He was
controversially named as the skipper by Arsene Wenger, and is the first-choice center
back alongside with Kolo Toure, although the French international may also play as left-
back. Generally regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League with
consistently high level of performance. Question has be raised about Gallas temperament
and leadership qualities after his display of petulance after the 2-2 draw at Birmingham.

11. Robin van Persie (Netherlands)

As the first-choice striker for Arsenal, Van Persie is capable of producing moments of
brilliance in finishing, earning himself the comparison with fellow Dutchman Dennis
Bergkamp. Not shy of shooting from long range or free-kicks, he has potential to rack up
fantasy points on shots-on-targets alone. While he still has rooms for improvement in his
goal-per-shoot ratio, there is no doubt he will be one of the first names to be considered
from the Arsenal team, provided he stays injury free - he missed a large chunk of season
07/08 due to recurring injuries, which limited him to only 15 league appearances,
notching up 7 goals in the process.

12. Carlos Vela (Mexico)

Carlos Vela made his Arsenal debut a whole 18 months after signing for the Club. On the
evidence so far, he has been worth the wait. The Mexican youngster joined the Club from
Celta Vigo in January 2007 but spent the next season and a half gaining valuable
experience in Spain. After a stint with Salamanca he helped Osasuna escape relegation
before joining up with Arsenal's first-team squad in the summer. Carlos shot to
prominence in 2005 when he helped Mexico win the FIFA Under-17 World
Championships, scoring five goals to scoop the tournament's Golden Boot.

14. Theo Walcott (England)

Transferred from Southampton with heft transfer fees at early 2006, Walcott finally began
to show glimpse of what he is capable of towards the end of season 07/08. With the
Gunners squad decimated with injuries, young Theo gained prolonged first team actions,
and he delivered - the brace vs Birmingham and Slavia Prague, coolly taken goals against
Derby and Sunderland, and the terrific run across the entire length of Anfield to set up
Adebayor for tap-in were the highlights of his season. Gifted with exception pace,
confidence and skills beyond his years, much more is to be expected from the talented
Walcott, especially so given that he has succeeded the no.14 shirt from Thierry Henry.

15. Denilson (Brazil)

While yet establish himself as the first team player at Arsenal, there are few doubts on the
potential and talents of the young Brazilian midfielder. Given extended run of games in
the Carling Cup games, Denilson showcased his skills and passing ability. He was given
more league starts at the end of season 07/08, and with the departure of Gilberto Silva, he
can expect more first team actions in the forthcoming season. He has captained his
country at every age group between Under-15 and Under-19 and received his first call-up
to the senior Brazil squad in March 2007. He will be looking to force his way back into
international contention this season.

16. Aaron Ramsey (Wales)

Technically sound and assured in possession, Aaron is one of the most promising young
players in Britain and is guaranteed a warm welcome among Arsenal's fans after turning
down Manchester United to join the Gunners in June. Aaron is the youngest player to
represent Wales at Under-21 level and, although just 17, has also been called up to the
full national squad. The young midfielder progressed through the youth ranks at Cardiff
City and also became the youngest ever player to represent the Bluebirds, coming on as a
substitute in a League match against Hull City on April 28, 2007, at just 16 years 124
days, breaking the previous record set by John Toshack.

17. Alex Song (Cameroon)
Song started his playing career at French club Bastia as a left back, but Arsenal saw him
as a versatile player who can play at the centre of midfield or defence. Towards the end of
season 07/08 he started several games as a centre back, including the league game vs
Man Utd at Old Trafford. Still has to learn his trades in the new roles, Song has massive
potential and dates ahead of him. Alex impressed during Arsenal's run to the Carling Cup
Semi-Finals, notably at Blackburn in the Quarter-Finals, and earned a late call-up to the
Cameroon squad at the Africa Cup of Nations. The young Gunner excelled in Ghana and,
although Cameroon fell short, Alex was named in the team of the tournament.

19. Jack Wilshere (England)

Jack enjoyed a rapid rise in the summer of 2008. He started the previous campaign aged
15 and aiming to make an impression in the Under-18s squad. By February he was
making his Reserve team debut against West Ham - scoring a wonderful curler in the
process - then in August was handed a first-team squad number. He joined Arsenal in
2001 as a nine-year-old and has turned into a creative midfield player who can operate on
either flank. He also scores his fair share of goals. His pre-season exploits have created a
buzz and he is considered one of the brightest young talents in the Arsenal squad.

20. Johan Djourou (Switzerland)

Swiss defender Djourou is naturally a centre back, although he may be used as a right
back or defensive midfielder. He impressed during his loan spell at Birmingham, but he
endured several injury ravaged seasons at Arsenal - in early 2008 he was recalled from
loan to deputise for Kolo Toure during African Cup of Nations, yet his injury meant that
he has fallen below Alex Song and Senderos in the pecking order. Now that both Song
(CDM) and Senderos (Loan) were away for 08-09 Season, Djourou was the first choice
after Toure and Gallas and made his presence felt after Gallas injury.

21. Lukasz Fabianski (Poland)

Lukasz is now the established No 2 keeper behind Manuel Almunia. He came to Arsenal
in the summer of 2007 from Legia Warsaw and, as usual under Arsène Wenger, was given
his first outings in the Carling Cup. He had excellent games against Newcastle, Sheffield
United and Blackburn as the youngsters marched into the Semi-Finals. His handling was
secure, his decision-making assured and he was calm under pressure. Wenger was
obviously impressed as gave him further experience in the final three Premier League
games of the campaign. He won the Polish League at Legia in 2005/06 and was voted the
best keeper in the ‘Ekstraklasa’ for both 2006 and 2007. He is an established part of the
national set-up and was selected for the squad at Germany 2006 and Euro 2008.

22. Gael Clichy (France)

Pacey, dynamic and reliable, Clichy has established himself as the regular left-back for
Arsenal. Ashley Cole was never missed as Clichy seamlessly replaced the English
international with impressive performances. He played in every league game for the
Gunners in season 07/08, provided the necessary outlet of attack for the Gunners on the
left with his pace and skills, where he notched up a creditable 6 assists. He won a place in
the PFA team of the year 07/08 - expect him to improve further under the stewardship of
Wenger, while was the Runner-up for Player of the Season. Gael was one of the most
consistent performers showing pace, tenacity and the desire to get forward as much as
possible.

Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season,
was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from
his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’. for Russia,
Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to
play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as
a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has
filled the ‘second striker’s’ role.

24. Vita Mannone (Italy)

At the start of the 2008/09 season, Vito had not made his first-team debut for Arsenal -
but he had already shown he has plenty of promise. Signed from Atalanta in July 2005,
the Italian has worked his way through the ranks and began the current campaign as the
third-choice keeper behind Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski. Vito played four
games on loan at Barnsley in 2006/07. It is his only first-team action of any sort so far.
But that may change this term.

25. Emmanuel Adebayor (Republic Of Togo)

Since joining the Gunners, The Togolese striker has considerably improved on his all
round game, being deceptively skilful and excellent in ball keeping, he has been critical
in the Gunners attacking moves. He made great progress in converting chances in front of
goal, and is able to produce some spectacular goals including the volley at Tottenham in a
3-1 victory. Adebayor can still be wasteful at times on goal scoring chances, if he can
further improve on that, he could turn into one of the best strikers around. ‘Ade’ enjoyed
his best season as a professional footballer in 2007/8. He hit 30 goals in 48 appearances
and carried the attack while Robin van Persie and Eduardo were injured. The Togolese
targetman has every attribute - pace, skill, strength and aerial ability - plus a tremendous
work-rate.

25. Nicklas Bendtner (Denmark)

A record of 17 starts, 23 substitute appearances and nine goals represents a fine start.
Nicklas is big but has a deft touch on the floor. He has the ability to link midfield and
attack with intelligence then finish of the move with precision. Perhaps his most
important goals last season came in the air. He powered home the winner against
Tottenham with his first touch in a North London derby. Nicklas also nodded in crucial
goals against Newcastle and Aston Villa. He is also becoming a major part of the Danish
set-up. At the start of this season Nicklas already had eight caps.

27. Emmanuel Eboue (Ivory Coast)

The Ivorian defender was shifted to the right side of midfield by Wenger due to the belief
that he can turn into a great midfielder and give balance to his young side. Generally a
decent full-back, but he produced some erratic performances at the right midfield.
Though been energetic, his lack of understanding with the runs of teammates plus his
lack of quality in crossing and finishing often frustrated the team and the crowd at the
Emirates. Eboue also has a reputation of being temperamental and has a habit of
producing rash tackles and challenges. In his first couple of seasons at Arsenal,
Emmanuel was a raiding right back. However last term the Ivorian became a fully-
fledged right midfielder. Having Bacary Sagna behind him, Emmanuel has full licence to
go forward but his defensive heritage allows him to cover back when required.
Emmanuel’s primary aim these days is to add balance to the Arsenal attack. He regularly
finds the byline and is arguably the best crosser in Arsène Wenger’s squad.

30. Armand Traore (France)

The French left back made a significant step forward last season by making his first starts
in the Premier League and Champions League. Before then the defender had been a part
of Arsène Wenger’s squad and a Carling Cup regular but full games against Sevilla and
Steaua Bucharest early in the campaign suggested that Wenger wanted to test him further.
Armand has all the attributes to be a excellent defender in the modern game. He is
powerfully built, fast and attack-minded. Perhaps he still needs to learn the craft of the
position but experience can not be learned on the training pitch, only matches can give it
to you and Armand is becoming more and more involved. This season he will gain
valuable experience while on loan at Portsmouth. Signed from Monaco in 2006, he has
represented France at Under-17, Under-18s and Under-19 level. Currently on Loan to
Portsmouth FC.

40. Kieran Gibbs (England)

Kieran made his first team debut for the Gunners last season, as a left-back in the Carling
Cup win over Sheffield United. Kieran first shot to prominence in the FA Youth Cup run
to the semi-final in 2007, grabbing a goal in both legs of the last four defeat to
Manchester United. He usually operates in either central midfield or wide on the left, but
impressed again at left-back in this pre-season’s Emirates Cup game against Juventus. As
well as playing in the Carling Cup, Kieran made 10 appearances for the Reserve Team
last season, scoring twice. In January he joined Championship side Norwich City on loan,
