New Emerson Level Instrumentation User Handbook for the refining industry supports product selection decisions
User handbook addresses the needs of managers, instrument engineers, project engineers and instrument technicians Emerson Process Management has introduced an informative user handbook on level measurement for the refining industry. Designed to support the decision making process, the handbook will help managers, engineers and technicians assess the range of technologies and products available, and choose the one most appropriate for their needs. The handbook also considers different level measurement challenges that refineries can encounter when optimising their processes and suggests how these can be addressed. The handbook provides information on the different level technologies, guidance on their use, application examples, and a section on radar best practice for the instrumentation technician - to ensure optimum installation and configuration of radar products. Accurate level measurement is vital in the refining sector to help process engineers meet stringent health and safety requirements, reduce maintenance costs and improve reliability, explains Sarah Parker, Application Manager, Emerson Process Management. What was once a simple level switch or transmitter for monitoring and control purposes may now be a powerful source of valuable long-term process data. The user handbook provides an overview of the different products and technologies available to help engineers assess potential solutions quickly and effectively and take full advantage of their different benefits and applications. Emerson has over 50 years experience in level measurement in the process industry and over 35 years experience in advanced radar level measurements. The range of Emerson

level measurement technologies includes radar, ultrasound, differential pressure and point level switches. The use of radar and ultrasonic level transmitters is growing rapidly due to their proven reliability, low maintenance requirements and the process of replacing older mechanical devices. Differential pressure (DP) transmitter level systems benefit from improved system construction, sizing and installation practices, giving increased installed reliability, while point level switches are widely used to meet safety standards for high/overfill and low level measurements. Pioneering developments in new, yet proven, level technologies such as radar and vibrating fork switches are driving the change from old mechanical devices towards more advanced solutions, helping customers to get the most out of their processes.
