TECHNIQUES

Hatching
Simply draw a series of parallel lines or intersecting lines closely together to create light tones. To achieve depth of colour, simply vary the height, width and density of the lines.

Cross Hatching
Similar to hatching, drawing two or more sets of parallel lines, crossing each other at an angle can create both colour and texture.

Bracelet Shading
This method of shading follows the contours of the form being drawn. This gives the drawing a 3D effect.

Gradations
These are smooth transitions from a light to a darker tone or from one colour to another. The density of colour achieved will vary depending on the amount of pressure applied on the pencil.

Sfumatos
This effect is achieved by rubbing pigment into the grains of the paper which can leave a misty effect.

Frottage
This technique involves working on paper placed over a textured surface which creates a variety of interesting effects e.g. using soft pencils on paper placed over surfaces like wood, sandpaper or rough woven material.

Highlighting
Highlights are always the most brilliant and lightest points in a subject. With graphite and charcoal drawings, these highlights are usually achieved with a white drawing pencil or white pastel. Alternatively, the paper can be left to show through.

TECHNIQUES

Tonal Drawing
Drawings conceived in tone and carried out using a tonal medium e.g. charcoal or watersoluble sketching can be full of mood and atmosphere.

Line and Wash

Use a pen or non-soluble pencil to outline your drawing and then colour it in with one of the watercolour sketching pencils. A wash can then be applied to fill in the necessary areas.

Smudging
This is ideal for producing graduated tone effects. Either use a finger or cotton buds. Always use a good quality fixative to prevent accidental smudging, both on complete areas and on finished drawings.
