The Journey Continues…
A number of years ago
I wrote an article for this special
Business Review, and I said that
we were embarking on a journey
which would see a tremendous
transformation of our community.
And while we have certainly seen
unprecedented growth; I would
suggest to you that we have not
reached a destination, rather we
are continuing to simply enjoy
the journey. Our journey has been
and will continue to be laden with
many challenges and obstacles
along the way. Many would say
that it is not the obstacles that will
keep us down, but how we as a
community deal with them that
will decide our future.
The results of the special
census taken this past spring now
The 2008 version of
the Mt. Juliet - West Wilson
County community would be
unrecognizable by former residents
who have been gone even 6 months.
New stores, whole new shopping
centers, new roads and new faces
around City Hall are a constant
amazement to those of us who are
around every day. Ever gone down
one of our local roads to discover
that there is something new there
you had no idea existed? Our
famous list of things you could not
buy in Mt. Juliet has permanently
disappeared and been replaced by
the slogan “if you can’t buy it here
you probably don’t need it”. With
the economy and the price of gas
affecting each of us in our daily
lives as well as our businesses we
have adopted a whole new term
‘stayvacation”. Play here, shop
here, eat here and stay here.
But we are missing
one thing. Unless you are an
elementary, middle or high school
student you might have trouble
Being raised in Mt. Juliet
it is really a pleasure to serve on
the Chamber Board and even more
a pleasure to chair the Membership
committee. I attended Mt. Juliet
Elementary, Mt. Juliet Jr High and
graduated from Mt. Juliet High
School. So, being a part of the
growth is bittersweet. I can still
recall when we got the first traffic
light and thought we had really
progressed, well……look at us
now.
Why is being a member
of the Chamber important to

Some words from your Chamber leaders
show that inside the city limits
alone, we now have over 26,000
residents. Keep in mind that
there are a tremendous number of
people living just outside the city
limits that are not included in this
total. Consider that the near term
projected number of people living
within five miles of the Mt Juliet
Road – Lebanon Road intersection
is nearly 60,000 people and all
indications are that this number
will continue to grow for many
years to come! Many things are
fueling this incredible growth;
both regionally and locally. It is no
secret that as Nashville continues
to become home to more and more
corporate headquarters, company
relocations, business expansions,
and new start-ups, people will be
moving to the area. And when they

now time for the powers that be to
focus on us getting an institution

surrounding us is really needed. It’s
time now for our elected and self
appointed community leaders to
get going and make this happen.
As 2008 passes into the
fall my term as Chairman of the
Board of the Chamber has started
on the last half phase and passing
the gavel to Jason Loggins of
Wilson Bank & Trust is on the
horizon. This is an active Chamber
with Ribbon Cuttings, Business
After Hours events, Wine Festivals
and Preview Parties, Golf Outings
and the Pre-tournament party,
education sessions, and numerous
other events both small and large
to keep us busy. So many times
company’s brand awareness.
You get to promote
business growth for your company
with other members and the
general business community by
participating in our Member to
Member meetings, Pizza with
the President and our monthly
luncheons. We also have
advertising opportunities in our
monthly newsletters, our chamber
page in the local paper, and on our
web site.
Our businesses embrace
our youth through the support
schools, and businesses, they are
hooked.
And herein lies one
of our greatest challenges, one
that the Chamber of Commerce
takes very seriously and is very
focused on; making sure that we
embrace this new growth while
holding near and dear those that
have come before us and to never
forget how we got here. For every
new business that opens in a new
building or shopping center, there
may be a similar business that
has been here for many years just
down the road. On our journey we
have to be sure that we bring these
businesses with us and not simply
and suddenly take our business
down the street; there has to be a
spot for everyone as we look to the
future.
I have seen people start a new
business and use the chamber
to their advantage. They have
attended functions, met and greeted
everyone they came across and
used those meetings to further their
business. I have also witnessed
those who joined and didn’t take
advantage of the opportunities
given to them. To each their own
but they are certainly missing a
chance to insure their success.
Daily I am reminded of the people
I know and friends I have as a
result of this association. True,
most people who are active around
town know at least five living and
three dead Realtors but it has really
helped I guarantee it.
Shortly the Chamber will
add to the staff with a much needed
membership services person. It is
a sign of progress for us and that
we are growing with the demand
for the chamber services. The City
grows with a host of professional
people coming on staff so that
we have the best possible person

The idea for Teach A
Child came one day while Sonia
was substitute teaching at MJCA.

arrived home that afternoon, she

idea of an employee and Richard’s
enthusiastic support.
“We chose the name,

Sonia said. “God truly opened
many doors for us and made this
possible.”

with the city” and close up shop
and relocate to the 103-acre
Providence Marketplace.
American Jewelry has
been located in a small 1,200 square
foot building next to City Hall for
nearly 30 years and you would be
hard pressed to find someone who
is not familiar with them and their
owners, Dwight and Billie Belew.
“Dwight and Billie Belew are like
family to our community,” said
Mt. Juliet Economic Development
Director Kenny Martin.
That sentiment is held
by many throughout West Wilson
County as countless families have

‘Awful experience’ spurs MJ dad to start own sports league: i9 Sports
I t took just one season
in a disorganized soccer league and
one disappointed daughter to make
Ron Jackson decide he wanted to
start his own soccer league.
“I got into the sports
industry because my daughter
played in a local soccer league
when she was four years old,”
Jackson said, “and we – myself,
my wife and my daughter – had
an awful experience participating
in the league. The coach was very
nice. However, the organization of
the league from start to finish was
just awful. The funny thing was
that we were not the only parents
who were disappointed with the
league. There were also several
parents who had been with the
league for a couple of years who
told us, ‘It’s like this every year.’”
Jackson said that his
daughter decided she didn’t want
to play soccer anymore.
“I knew she was too
young to make that decision based
on one season of participation,
but I also knew that there were
no other options for soccer in my
immediate community,” Jackson
said. “So, I thought that I would
simply start my own league.”
Jackson said he initially
wanted to start a basketball league
for kids, but after some research
he found that there were many
aspects of the process that he had
not considered.
“During the research
process I came across a franchise
called i9 Sports. I found that i9
Sports had just started offering
youth sports franchises,” Jackson
said. “I had the passion to organize
my own youth sports league and
had found a company that could
offer the support that was needed
to deliver a first class sports
opportunity to both the parents and
the kids that participated.”
Jackson said he started
with 80 kids playing in the first

a cheerleading program, soccer,
basketball and dodgeball leagues,

basics he will be struggling with
harder problems later on,” Willis
said. “Answering these math
questions should be done fluently
without effort.”
Willis said his tutoring
service stresses number sense
instead of algorithms so that

answers the student understands
the process. He likened this to when
students “cram” for an exam the
night before, simply memorizing
numbers or dates, then forgets the
information in a few weeks.
“It is easy to forget
something we memorize,” Willis
said, “but nearly impossible to
forget something you understand.”
Willis added that parents
shouldn’t wait until December,
or after their child’s first report
card is sent home to realize he is
struggling in math.
“Parents should see where
their kids stand while the school
year is young to avoid getting left
behind,” he said. “And just because
you’re getting an A in class doesn’t
mean you understand.”

“That’s like me saying I hate
golf, so I don’t play it. I don’t like
not being good at it. It’s human
nature for children to shy away

once that confusion is gone, they
become better at it.”
There are a half dozen
teachers, including Willis and his
wife, and the student to teacher
ratio is rarely more than three
to one. Willis said that while
“individual results may vary,”
the students who are invested are
“doing wonderful things.” And
Willis said that 99 percent of the
students there are invested and
flourishing, and he attributes that
to the teachers on staff.

with an eye on retirement. In a 2007
analysis of surveys conducted into
defined contribution plans such
as 401(k) retirement programs,

that, among lower pay employees
ages 50 to 64, 66 percent have
lower than one year’s pay in their
accounts. Barring a miracle, that
makes the idea of a comfortable
retirement almost impossible.
While saving money can
seem like pushing a boulder up
a steep hill, it’s not as hard as it
sounds. For those looking to save
more, consider the following tips.
· Enroll in a retirement
savings program: This is perhaps
the ideal way to save money, as
programs such as a 401(k) remove
the money from a paycheck before
taxes. Essentially, that money is
being saved before an individual
can even see it, acting almost
as forced savings. In addition,
employers may match 401(k)
