J. Lynn Cleavel^nd family working in Uberlandia, Brazil

Vol. 7, No. 1, January, 19T3

Pear friends in Christ,

We arrived safely in Cincinnati on schedule Decem ber 19 after a short visit with my brother in Puerto Rico. Mother, who had visited with us for about a

month in Brazil, returned with us.

She

enjoyed

her

visit and can bore you by the hour with all the de tails of her visit! Needless to say we were happy that she could make the trip end see how we live and what we are trying to do in Uberlandia.

We are enjoying speaking in the churches, visiting friends & family and making new acouaintsnces.
The Christian Church at Bright has been so very

helpful in providing a furnished home complete with food, color TV and an electric can openerl It's so
nice we mi^t not leave!
And the Church of Christ at Harrison has furnished

us the use of a I968 Ford. God's people have provided

we have been doing.

There are various areas

where we can use

extra funds. Specifically and more Christian literature which

immediately we need is expensive to put

into print, movie films to extend our film ministry and funds to place them on TV and funds for a camp &
retreat area. These are all expensive important in spreading the Good News. Question: What are the projects and

basic reasons you want to

Not necessarily. When our work in Uber-

Vol. 7> Number 3> March 1973

After a fun-filled jam packed two months it is good to be home in warm s\mny Uberlandia. We arrived here

on Sunday, February 25 after arriving in Campinas on Saturday. Dave Meadows, a friend with whom I left our

car, did not receive

my letter

advising him that we

would arrive at the airport in Campinas. So he waited for us at the wrong one. Welcome home and all of that
stuff!

Enroute home we enjoyed two days with Louis Ray and Donna Haubner in Orlando, Florida, Louis is a brother
to Earl who works north of us here in Brazil. They

showed us a nice time which included a day at Disney World. That was a great treat.

We went from Orlando to San Juan, Puerto Rico and visited with ay brother Gary and Karen. By then we.

were glad to get back to some genuine tropical heat. With all due respects to the Chamber of Commerce that winter sunshine doesnt quite get the job done.

At Gary's Mark fell

Vol. Yj Number I4., April 1973

For some reason iVe been terribly slow in getting
this Cable written. Part of it is due to lazinessi

suppose, some because

of a busy month

but mostlyl

confess it's because there are no great victories to

report. I seem to have this thing about preferringto brag instead of talking about failures and problems.
Of course it's not really all that bad but we are

in a slow period with our new Christians. I guess they've been followers of Christ long enough that the new is wearing off a little and some of the old habits are creeping in again. One of the men, Antonio, has been hitting the bottle again and missing services Another fellow seems to pay more attention to his father, a leader of a Spiritist group, then to Christ. Last Sunday evening we called on Lazaro who had miss
ed services because of his ailing father. .. But we

found Lazaro with a couple of buddies who had brou^t a bottle to enjoy the evening. Two of our folk have been involved in a neighborhood fuss. So things are
sort of rocky there.

On the other hand Valdo is growing

in

his

new

faith and has been working with his cousin in a Bi ble study. So we rejoice when there is reason to re

joice and try to help the stumblers and tho-^e who seem to grow very slowly. I suppose it really isn't
so much different than where you live and work. We

are dependent upon the Lord and that lesson is brai^

home daily.

A few days ago I sent a summary of our budget plans

to the Elders at the Bright Christian Church. The

main items budgeted for this year are the correspond ence courses, new religious films, printing the book What Jesus Taught and the big project of locating and

purchasing a suitable area for camps and retreats.

to be able

to accumulate

enough

funds to make a purchase before December, 1973. If our financial support remains steady we should be able to swing it, the Lord willing. We have enjoyed personal letters from Fred Callaway and Lloyd Gulley. Doth men are busy leaders with
the Harrison Church of Christ. We appreciate it when

you take the time to write about personal experiences,

victories and defeats. And come to think of it, it's

really not fair that I or any missionary should be expected to keep up a steady flow of interesting in formative, challenging, edifying correspondence with out receiving any feedback. So let us know what God
is doing in your life.
The Charles Kent family of which we wrote in the

filling in for David Sanders while he is on furloi^.

And thinking of financial support I want to express

I talked-

Vol. 8, N-umber 5> May 1973
Things are looking up in Uberlandia. Bright spots include a new family who is showing interest in the gospel, another young couple who have leadership ability and may work with us, a feud settled among two
women of our church family and indications that An tonio and his situation may be taking a turn for the

better. These have been matters of prayer with us and we believe God has been giving some answers.

To most people

of the world and

to some

of

our

readers that last statement sounds like so much self-

deception. But as Francis A. Schaeffer has so ably pointed out our God is not silent. He has spoken and he continues to speak to and for those who have ears

Vol. 8, Number 8, Oct. 1973

Dear Friends, We have sent the following letter to each of our

%
it here

si^porting congregations

and reproduce

to

share with you our present plans.

'"Dear Christian Friends,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus.
For various reasons and afterconsultation with the

Elders at Bright we have decided to return to a state

side ministry in January or February 197^.

We are so thankful for your help and interest in

this project over the past six years. We are indeed greatly indebted to you for your kindness and consid
eration.

The Harry Scates family will be returning from furlough about the first of October, 1973 and will continue to provide leadership for the new Christians here. We are happy to have shared in establishing
this work and believe it will grow and prosper for our
Lord.

We will not be accepting any mission funds after November 1, 1973. Any funds that Mr. Harry Wilson,

oTir forwarding agent, receives after that date will be

returned. The elders have authorized us to divide the

13.12ion funds we have on hand between the can^) in Bra

silia which is under the direction cf Charles Kent and

the A'?sociation for Printing Christian Literature un

der the direction of Carol Lowe and located in Gtoiania.

Tiianks again for the part you have played. May the
lord continue to bless you.

In Him,

J. lynn Cleaveland"
One of the greatest needs in Brazil has been met.

TJie Brazilian Bible Society just published the Portug-!j.ese version of Good News for Modern Man. The Eng lish trf>ni3lation of the New Testament was prepared by
Dr. Robert G. Bratcher who lived in Brazil for some

time. He assisted in the preparation of the Portu guese text which was translated from the Greek. It wss -produced completewi-fer-theline drawingswhich appear in the English version.
This translation is needed because of the educa

tional level of the masses. There is a good trans-. Ic-.tion available - but it is not in the popular langu^ise commonly used and understood. We have spent many si/ady hours trying to explain the Portuguese wordingto people in order to explain the meaning of the Bib

le passage.

This new translation is called

"A Bib-

lia Na Linguageiii De Hoje" (The Bible in the Language of Today) and will be a definite help in getting the
message across.

We recently had our little congregation in for stj)per. We had our regular Sunday afternoon service which includes songs, Bible study, prayer and the

Lord's Supper. Then Julie sejrved a mixture of Ameri can and Brazilian dishes. It was a good fellowship.

A rich chocolate cake

(that's

an American dessert)

vanished along with a good selection of Brazilian des-

serts, such as cheese and goiabada(a thick jelly made

frcan a local fruit), and a rich dessert of papaya and
milk caramel.

Though our nei^bors, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, etc. are having serious internal political problems the situation in Brazil remains very calm. Brazil is in the midst of an economic boom. The new president
has been selected and will take office in January.
