For us, 1977 began as no other year has begun. Pam and I have been continually
reminded of the words in Psalm 46:8:

and lives transformed.

Pam and I actually saw the new year began in a prayer and planning meeting
with the members of the Novo Horizonte

congregation. The congregation adopted the goal of 100 in average attendance for

Everyone seemed to have a new spirit of acceptance of colleagues and a new determination in regard to the work. The Spirit of Christ reaUy moved during that conference and has not stopped yet. Praise the Lord! If thin^ continue to progress and the missionaries continue to pray together, to plan together and to work together, then it will be a new day

January was no different. In our Daily

surpass this goal by June, thus having to reformulate our goals for the rest of the year. It is indeed a pleasure to report our activities and the results to you. CONFERENCE. - We saw the working of the Lord during January in a powerful way, especially among us who are laboring to spread the "Good News" here in Brazil. The first two weeks of January were taken up by a 1500-mile bus trip to Belem for the annual conference {January 5th-llth) of the Christian Church/Church

orientation as to how to deal with the

forces of darkness that are plaguing the Brazilian people. Since Spiritism is a prevalent religious force here in Brazil, it is necessary that we who are trying to present THE Christ as THE Way, THE
Truth and THE Life have a definite

understanding of the thought patterns and practices of those involved in Spiritism. However, without taking anything away from the two guest speakers, the

Richmond, Indiana, I am certain that she knew that everyone here had done

everything for her and the family that could possibly have been done. Could you remember to pray for, and perhaps write to, Lora who is trying to get accustomed to the fact that she is now a widow and who is trying to adjust to life in the States after an absence of 16 years? Even without Bill's funeral and the

activities related to settling his estate, February would have been a packed month. We held an important and good meeting for us who work in Central Brazil. Eleven missionaries were present. Then, I showed a film at camp. After that, I

At the same time in Novo Horizonte,

the young people felt like they just had to "do" something for Christ. Pam and I had a suggestion as to what they might "do." The up-shot of this was that we and the young people of the church hauled, sorted out. organized and distributed to the churches about 8 pick-up loads of
Christian literature and S.S. materials

that BCE had received from APLIC, which prints for the Christian Church here in Brazil. We are truly grateful for all the work that these young people did and feel sure that many in our churches will be blessed by means of these materials.

our men responded with enthusiasm. Besides being taught new ideas concern ing more effective leadership in the local church, they were afforded the opportu nity of getting to know leaders from other Christian Churches. Our men really benefited from this meeting.

Family Notes
Just before Christmas, our family was pleasantly surprised by a short visit from a long-time friend from our home town. George Morgan is studying law at the present time in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the son of A. R. Morgan, who is the
President of the Trustees of BCE and who

is also one of the Elders of our sponsoring congregation, First Christian, in Erwin, Tennessee. George was on a trip to several points of interest in Latin America when he stopped by. We were pleased
that he took the time off from his

scheduled itinerary to pay us a visit, albeit

brief.

The children and I agree that the summer vacation (December, January, and February) passed all too quickly this year. It seems that we did not have enough time to do even half of the things we had planned to do. We did have company a few times, but we did not travel this year except to Brasilia to meet Timmy's plane. Early in January, Gary did make a trip to Belem, in the North, in order to attend the annual missionary conference, but the children
and I remained at home. Then, later in the

month, when Gary worked at Senior Camp, Jonathan went with him. Jonathan thoroughly enjoyed all the attention that the campers lavished on him. I think he

turned out to be the mascot of the group. During the third week of January, we were all very much involved in a week of Daily Vacation Bible School at Novo Horizonte. This year was the first time for
a DVBS at Novo Horizonte and, thank-

jfully, it turned out to be a very successful

one. I taught the 7 to 9-year-olds in the afternoon sessions. Gary worked with the young people at night. Our children thoroughly enjoyed their respective clas ses. A number of contacts with parents were made through our DVBS and we are now seeing some positive results. God is showing us that there are many ways to evangelize. The girls and I found that by the time
we took care of the normal activities of the

day, studied English as often as we could and went swimming several times, the month of January was over. February brought more company and an area meeting of the missionaries. It
was that same week-end of the mission

meeting that Bill Metz, a fellow mission ary from Sao Paulo, spent a couple of days
with us. He told us that he had not been

well enough to take care of his business there. But, by the following Friday night, Bill had passed away here in Goiania of Typhoid is an almost non-existent disease here in Central Brazil. Although our family and others were exposed to it, we are thankful to report that no one has shown any signs of coming down with it. Early on February 24th, a few days
before God left for Sao Paudo, our whole

months as the only child and returned to the joys and aggravations of being the

have him back home. I have no doubts

family eagerly awaited Timmy's return at the Brasilia airport. For Timmy, the return meant quite an abrupt adjustment.
He returned from real winter weather to

our mid-summer heat. He spent three

that Timmy will always treasure those three months with his grandparents, the thrill of having lots of fun in the snow, and of winding up his stay with a trip to Disney World and other points of interest
in Florida.

On March 1st, the 1977 school year officially began for our five children. Purchasing material for uniforms, book bags, lunch satchels, pencil boxes, note books, bctoks and other school supplies takes a lot of money and a lot of time. I always feel relieved when we finally have everything in order right down to the correct color of the socks for physical
education class. The children seem to be

pleased with their teachers and are enjoying being with their school friends once again after the vacation period.
(Picture #8)

It seems that bicycle riding, skating and swimming are the children's favorite activities at this point. Everyone in the family now has a bicycle, but it is a rare day that all the bikes are in tip-top shape. It takes Gary, Timmy and our near-by bicycle shop to keep us on wheels. Jonathan was so pleased when he learned to ride in February. The first couple of days were hard on him, his bike and on the
rest of us, because he could balance and

peddle, but it was too much to ask that he also guide the bike at the same time. Now, he is able to co-ordinate the whole process
and is an avid cvclist. (Continued On Page 8)

It Takes Time!
It has been said that patience is a
virtue. If so, then, one fault that Earl Haubner and I have in common is that we

are very impatient -- especially when it

comes to Christian growth and spiritual

maturity in relations to the Brazilians
with whom we work. We both want

Christian growth, spiritual maturity, fervent dedication, and evangelistic zeal to occur in all of their lives-yesterday,
and as if by magic. It is hard on us to see a new convert dying spiritually for lack of growth. It is very frustrating to see one who has made some progress suddenly
become ensnarled in the wiles of the

Devil, It is indeed disheartening to see one who has come to occupy a place of leadership fall into one or all of the three major temptations here (strange doctrine,
women, or materialism) and lose his

testimony and, hence, his influence for

Christ in the church and the community.

But, recently, we have been more successful. We are coming to know Brazil, her culture and her people, a little better. We are learning more and more of the necessity of "waiting upon the Lord." We have read the Scriptures of how one plants, another waters, God increases, and another reaps. Our problem is that we want to plant and reap, too -- and fast! Not too long ago. Earl and I read with a great deal of interest Mark Trail's account

At 50 years of age, the saguaro may reach a height of 10 feet and, finally, at 75, it sends out its first "arms." Think of it! More than 100 years are required for this "giant" to reach maturity, but it may then live on to be 250 years old! In our disciple-ship program, our new
Brazilian converts also at times become

discouraged at the slowness of their Christian development and maturity. Yet,

Second Quarter Report

During "Semana Santa" (or, Holy Week", as they call it here), the congregation at Novo Horizonte was in a real spirit of worship and prayer. Naturally, Earl and I expected the building to be over-flowing on Easter Sunday morning. But, we had not reckoned with the "weatherman." Early Sunday morning, it began to rain and to rain hard. By church time, all the streets were flooded. At any rate, we tried to make it. But, just one block from the church, thecar fell into a deep ditch
in the middle of the street. Result? We had

After finishing up with April tax forms, I immediately got busy on preparing all of our visual-aid equipment. Moacir is to have the use of the projector and films for various campaigns which he, as a visiting evangelist, plans to hold in the Sao Paulo-Itapevi areas, from April 30th to August 20th. As you know, after Moacir left the "sound truck" ministry and because of any lack of time, Ihave tried to "kill" the film ministry. But, the amazing thing has been that, even though the films and equipment have received harder usage at the hands of semi-skilled operators, the film ministry is

Christ got together to iron out a few of the details for the up-coming conference. The committee is composed of Tom Fife, who is the Chairman, David Bayless, Earl Haubner, Norman Maddux and me. Our conference will be held at a seminary in Rio de Janeiro from January 5th-llth with Drs. Carroll Osburn and Woodrow Phillips, as well as Helen Hamilton of Kingsport,
Tennessee. The theme will be: "Set in order

The requests have far out-numbered our

ability to take care of them. During January, February and July, the films are

generally used in connection with Christian Service Camps. During our Spring (September, October, November), the
films are used in revivals. And, during our Fall, the films of the Life of Christ and the Moody Science series are shown in schools and occasional campaigns, such as the ones Moacir is having at this time. Allinall.astimehasprogressed, we have become convinced that, even though we do

And from April 26th-29th, Pam and I, along with several other Christian Church missionaries, took advantage of some "in-service" training with Dr. Jay Adams in the field of counselling. Dr. Adams is Professor of Practical Theology at West minster Theological Seminary. After hearing his lectures, I personally feel that God is using this man to help prepare the Christian preacher/counselor to aid his people in facing the many sorts of crisis situations that they inevitably encounter in a world of sin. I know that some of the things that he has spoken and written are certainly helping me to do a better job of counselling
here.

Besides our discipleship duties, we were actively engaged in getting everything ready to work in a 10-day revival meeting

May and June were also months in which

Earl and I had heavy teaching and calling schedules. To me, there is no greater pleasure than to see a person accept Christ and then, to see that person grow and develop in Christian maturity. During this quarter, I have worked especially with four

Christ. The meetings were so well attended that they had to be held out of doors. The small building just would not hold all the people. We were very thrilled by the fact that 130 ofthose attending accepted Christ. Of these, 48 have been taking classes on the Christian life and, of the 48,18 have already been baptized. However, the "follow-up" work may be hindered by the fact that the preacher might leave soon in order to start another congregation. We pray that the momentum gained by having the revival will not be hindered by any change of preachers and trust that the next one will maintain a high level of evangelistic activity.

Family Notes
Where did the time go? At the time of our last report, the children had just started their first semester and now they are already talking about what they want to do during their school vacation. What with being a study hall teacher making sure that the children all get their lessons, a taxi driver making sure that they get to school safely, a social chairman making sure that they get to their extra-curricular activities on time, and a homemaker striving to keep children and husband happy, healthy and in clean clothes, as well as being a women's leader and Sunday School teacher at the church, I find that the days sometimes go by in a flash. But, I am happy and would not have it any other way. Gary and I are

him before, have enjoyed getting to know him, and having the opportunity to help him. Right now, he has returned to London and Salisbury, Rhodesia to wind up things before moving permanently to Brazil. Because of "Tony's interest in farming, he and Gary spent a lot of time looking at the truck and farm machinery exhibits at the fair. The children especially enjoyed the rides, cotton candy and candied apples. We all enjoyed walking through the rows and
rows of horses, hogs and cattle. I do not think that there was a single calf that the children did not stop to pet. We were even able to see part of the rodeo. Timmy has dreams of owning calves and, later on, a farm. The fort area on top of the playhouse is multi-purpose. Sometimes, it is a pirate ship. At other times, it is a Western fort. On certain days, it is a game area. On special occasions, we have parties up on top. Many times, we carry food up, so that the children and their friends can have picnics way up high. At night on the weekends, it frequently serves as a camping spot. The children are happy to have a fun place to play. And, I am happy tohave most of the toys out of their bedrooms.

Although our plans for having a booth at the fair this year were disrupted by circumst ances beyond our control, we, neverthe less, were able to go to the fair twice as spectators only. Accompanying us was a farmer from Zambia by the name of James Anthony Butts, who was our house-guest during May and J une. Tony, having concluded that he was going to have to find another country for him and his family, flew to Brasilia and, then, took a bus directly to Goiania. Here in Goiania, inasmuch as Tony could not speak any Portuguese, a very practical problem began to manifest itself. Finally, he made

It was amazing how much the girls (Jennifer and Amy) were able to learn in just a few days. They presented their routines on the mat and on the bar very

is healthy for them to be well-trained physically as well as spirtually and scholastically. The month of July is school vacation here

Third Quarter Report

This third quarter has been a good three months. For us, it has been profitbale in the sense that not only what we have been doing has been rewarding and worthwhile but,
also, it has marked the thresh-hold of our

comfortingto know that, if necessary, Earl is close by and will be able to "fill-in" during my furlough (September to December of

"count-down" to open up a new sub-divi

sion, Cachoeira Dourada (Golden Water fall), for Christ (October 16th).
The main work that I have done this

quarter has not been so much in one-to-one discipling as it has been in the areas of evangelism and church administration,

especially in connection with the following

churches:

1. - Sao Paulo. The Figueira Grande (Big Fig Tree) congregation, ministered to by Bro. Jose, is not a very strong congregation
and is located within the limits of Greater

Sao Paulo. It was only in July that the people there informed me that the property had not been placed in their name and that they could not get a building permit without having the deed in order. Thus, lam in the process of getting power of attorney from the title-holding organization in Brasilia in order to effect the transfer of property in the near future. I am also encouraging them
to organize a free, autonomous congre gation as soon as possible. During July, I also visited with the congregation at Itapevi (24 miles from Sao
Paulo) where Moacir is the minister. One of

the way. Hence, if the owner should pass away before making over the deed, the church, legally, has no way to press its claim to ownership of the property. Moacir and the congregation are bravely trying to handle the problem. To help pay the expenses, they have decided to sell some things belonging to the congregation (i.e., an adding machine and an organ). Although the expenses may run to only about U.S. $2,000, this is quite a sudden jolt for the congregation to withstand. Things are going fairly well with this congregation where Moacir ministers but, recently, the old adage of "When the cat is away, the mice will play," was proven to be true once again. While Moacir and his family were here for 10 days visiting and talking over plans for the church, several of the members there proved to be a real

My response was cast in the form of questions; "You support your own local program, do you not? You are having your own calling and revival campaigns and are experiencing growth, are you not? And, if you are taking care of these things, why not govern yourselves, as you did formerly, under the Lordship of Christ?" December 10, 1977
Dear Friends:

ni

To Pam and me, the Incarnation of Christ, observed at Christmas, remains a tremendous

mystery. Because of God's plan in Christ, we have become joint heirs with the only Son of God. With the inexplicable salvation that we receive through Christ comes the inescapable responsi bility to share the "good news" with others. We rejoice in the fact that we can participate in the work of the Kingdom here in Brazil, sharing the peace and joy that only Christ can offer. As Christians, we feel, as you must, that in Christ we have received a priceless gift - a gift whose sharing enriches rather than impoverishes the one who shares.

Reflecting on the Christmas Event, we offer to Godour praise and prayers for His "unspeak
able gift," the child at whose birth the angels sang, the God/man who came onto the human scene for the sake of all men. Because of Christ's coming and continued presence, Pam and I, along with many others, have gone far from home to make disciples. We are thankful for our work and for your helping us to be here.

More than three-quarters of the twentieth century is over. The hope of Christians for global
evangelism and the cherished dream of the human heart for peace have not been realized for most of the world. It appears that the future holds many difficulties - wars, conflict, famine, epidemics, economic dislocations and scarcity of basic materials and commodities. However, as Christians, we have a blessed certainty: CHRIST, whose Incarnation we are celebrating: CHRIST, whose Presence is with us in the person of the Holy Spirit; CHRIST, whose Coming Again
is our great hope.

Pam, the children and I join with you in affirming that our real hope for 1978 is in Christ, who is "the same yesterday, today and forever." And, we send to you our best wishes for a happy
holiday season. Sincerely,

Gary and Pam Burrell

Right now, one church in Gama, near Brasilia, is being forced to move out of its buildings because it is located on an "industrial" lot and not on a lot designated for a church. Although everyone has long been aware of the problem, no one thought that the government would enforce the rule against a church. But, it is. I have related all this as a background, for, after 30 years (1948-1978) of mission activity here inBrazil, the Christian Church has a lot of loose ends to wrap-up, legally and otherwise. It is much more complicated here to keep legal matters up-to-date. It takes longer to get things done, and there is a tremendous temptation to let things "slide" and not worry about keepingthem in
accordance with the laws of the land. This is

In trying to bring about more contact and unity among the churches, Harry Scates and I have each been making a very conscious effort at speaking to the various ministers and to the congregations. Because of a lack of communication between the congre gations, they feel somewhat isolated. We are looking into the possibilities of correcting this situation, because we have found the congregations and leaders open to the idea of more co-operation and contact. Evangelism.
