WELCOME TO WASHINGTON DC! On behalf of DC Series 2013 LLC and Chesapeake and Potomac Softball, we are honored and proud to host the 37th annual NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series. It was exactly 10 years ago that Washington last hosted the GSWS and we are grateful that the NAGAAA delegates placed their faith in us again in 2013. Washington, DC has a proud tradition of hosting signicant events from presidential inaugurals to premier sporting competitions. We have committed that same energy and drive to DC Series 2013. With world class hotels, softball complexes, event venues, and cultural and nightlife opportunities, the 2013 GSWS in Washington will be unforgettable! We have been working hard for two years to plan and deliver a series that combines the best of amateur gay softball with off-eld events to create a fun-lled environment of friendship and sportsmanship that are hallmarks of NAGAAA and the GSWS. And through it all, we remain committed to giving back to our community and promoting the high standards of fair play on and off the eld. The city, its elected leaders, and citizens are diverse, progressive, and supportive. With long-standing support of the LGBT community including recently enacted marriage equality legislation, Washington DC truly is a destination where you are free to be yourself. In that spirit, we have chosen One Team. One Dream. as the theme for the 2013 GSWS. Our community is only as strong as the sum of all of its unique parts, whether youre lesbian, gay, bi, trans, athletic, not so athletic, family, or friend, all are needed and welcome on our One Team. And as a community, we have our individual and collective Dreams such as, marriage equality, employment non-discrimination, adoptions rights, freedom to be out to your family and friends, or even,
winning the 2013 Gay Softball World Series.....we all have that One Dream. We also want to bring special attention to and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s ground-breaking I Have a Dream speech which occurred on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. Organizing and executing an event like the GSWS is only possible with the generous support of our sponsors and donors and the dedication of our volunteers. Please patronize these local businesses, restaurants, bars and media partners as they are not only supporting the GSWS, but they have been strong long-time supporters of our LGBT sports community. And also take a moment to stop one of the many individuals running around in the neon yellow/green shirts with the word VOLUNTEER blazing across the shoulder blades and say Thanks. We couldnt have done it without them. Events like the GSWS are truly transformative not only for the participants but also for the community. We are honoured to be your hosts and look forward to adding another chapter to the long and rich history of DC LGBT sports. Please enjoy our amazing hometown, have fun and elevate the game to new heights, and together, lets continue to make the GSWS the largest and best annual gay sporting event in the world! ONE TEAM. ONE DREAM. WELCOME TO THE 37TH ANNUAL GAY SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES IN WASHINGTON, D.C.! I can think of no more appropriate place to be in 2013 than right here in the U.S. capital. Given the advances made in our community the past few years, the repeal of the U.S. militarys ban on LGBT service members, the U.S. Supreme Court striking down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, and all over the U.S., more states are now recognizing our rights to love and marry, it feels tting that we should come to D.C. to celebrate who we are, and our own unique community. Now we know how our longtime Canadian friends in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal have felt all these years! The GSWS D.C. Host Committee has done amazing work to make sure the city is ready for us, and its been a project at least two years in the making. Theyve raised funds, spent countless volunteer hours and have rolled out the red carpet for our tournament in a way only Washington, D.C. can do. Of course your NAGAAA Executive Board and committees have been hard at work all year long, too. Weve revamped the Series format to be able to accommodate a recordsetting 161 teams. Weve streamlined and claried the battesting process and were even exploring adding modern technology to our protest processes. This year marks a return of the hugely popular myGSWS. com, which allows teams, players and fans to follow not only their progress, but the progress of every other team

competing this week with near real-time accuracy. I want to thank our partner MillerCoors, who never misses an opportunity to support LGBT athletics and without whom events like ours wouldnt be possible. Having just taken over the post as NAGAAA Commissioner a little over a year ago, Ive learned much. Ive worked hard with Jerry Travis, our Treasurer along with Jack Neilsen, Business Development, Jeff Card, Secretary, James Williamson, Assistant Commissioner, Paula Cline, member-at-large, and Mona Garcia, executive assistant. I can tell you that whether its been in the private or public sector, I have never worked with a more dedicated and professional team than the one you have elected into ofce. I stand in awe of their spirit and their cooperation, and I know that we are capable of accomplishing great things together. As we continue our work, we never lose sight that we are rst and foremost the loudest voice for LGBT athletics in the world. As such our focus is always on the eld and making sure that you, our constituents, have the best softball experience possible. We look forward to a great week of softball, fun and friends and hope that you have the experience of your life right here in the U.S. Capital! See you on the elds, CHRIS BALTON NAGAAA Commissioner

In 1997, NAGAAA initiated the Hall of Fame to honor the achievements of people and member cities in gay softball (both on and off the playing eld). NAGAAA inducted the founding fathers from New York and San Francisco that same year. In 1998, the rst woman was inducted in a ceremony held during the GSWS festivities. In 2009, the NAGAAA Archives were created to preserve our GSWS, Hall of Fame and NAGAAA memorabilia and chronicle NAGAAAs history. The NAGAAA Archives collects video from past commissioners and works closely with the Hall of Fame committee and membership to document our organizations history. The NAGAAA Archives also works with each GSWS committees historian to collect and chronicle each citys two-year journey on the road to the GSWS.
