FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

Soon we will be saying goodbye to our seminarian, Mark, whose last weekend in our cluster will be August 24-25. Unfortunately, because of scheduling conflicts, we wont be able to have a large cluster going away party for him but I do encourage you to show him your support and appreciation as he finishes his time with us. God willing, Mark will be able to join us next summer for a Mass of Thanksgiving after he is ordained a priest and well have a large party then. I also want to thank all those involved in the receptions after the Masses that Archbishop Jackels celebrated last weekend in Winnebago County. He told me that he felt very welcome by all of us and has a better sense of his diocese because of it. He told me when we were visiting the night before that he feels its important for a bishop to get to know his people first hand so he makes a point of celebrating Sunday Mass in different parishes if he is not otherwise detained. In many ways, I could see the heart of Pope Francis in our new Archbishop. Its inspiring for me to have leaders who have service at the heart of their ministry and I hope they are an inspiration to all of you as well. In the wake of his visit, several of you asked me what the difference is between a bishop and an Archbishop. First, in terms of orders, there is no difference. There are three orders within the church; deacon, priest and bishop. A bishop traces his authority back to the apostles who were given their authority by Jesus. However, within the order of bishop, there are distinctions made because of the importance of their assignment. An Archbishop is called to administer a large, important, historical diocese with a high density of Catholics. He is also called to oversee the bishops in a particular region. So, Archbishop Jackels oversees the other three dioceses in Iowa by periodically meeting with their bishops. If the diocese involves a large metropolitan area such as New York, Chicago, or Boston, the bishop may become a Cardinal. Cardinals are also the Popes closest advisors, which is why they get the responsibility of choosing the next pope. The most important bishop, obviously, is the bishop of Rome, the Pope. Please join me in daily praying for our bishops, especially Archbishop Jackels.
