Day with an array of events

I
t was raining events last week at
most campuses as companies
celebrated World Environment
Day (WED).
Campuses were abuzz, with em-
ployees committing their time to do
their bit to show that they care for a
green Earth. UST Global’s Chennai
centre took the occasion to do a fol-
low-up of their CSR initiative, Mitra,
where they provide health care and
spread environmental awareness in
Azhinjivakkam village in Thiruvallur
district. Around 200 educational kits
where distributed to children of Ja-

Infosys, on the other hand, kicked
off a ‘Polythene bag-free commit-
ment’ across all Infosys campuses
globally. The initiative sought to ban
the use of polythene bags by Infosys

Cognizant celebrated the occasion
with an array of events focused on
the theme climate change and
healthy environment. Tree planta-
tion, green walk, carpooling registra-
tion drives, painting competition,
etc were conducted. ■

W hen was the last time your at-
tention held for quite a while
and you stood looking at a piece
of art made of junk? You don’t
remember? That is exactly what
happened on World Environ-
ment Day at Ajuba Solutions.
Ajuba, apart from being a great
place to work, is also a great
place for fun. They have a team
called ICONS that organises
events and games to keep the
zeal of the employees alive.
This time, team ICONS orga-
nised ‘Junk Art’ to kindle the cre-
ative urge of employees. What is
junk art? For those who haven’t
heard, you could call it ‘Wonders
out of Waste’. The idea of the
game was to create new things
out of things of no practical val-
ue.
The teams were introduced to
the event two weeks ago with
rules and regulations. The Aju-
bans did all the work of junk art
right on the operations floor
amidst their normal work
routine.
The categories of award were
‘Most useful out of the most use-
less award’, ‘Most creative junk
art award’ and ‘Best looking junk
art award’. Forty teams partici-
pated across the three offices in
Chennai, using the most useless
items ranging from egg shells,
used batteries, bottles, fused
bulbs, coffee dregs, cassette
tapes, rubber caps of used syr-
inge bottles, sawdust and water-
melon seeds to name a few.
The judges for the event were
Anuradha Pasupathy, founder of
AP Textile Design Company and
a guest faculty at NIFT, and Nish-
anth Purohit, an established cin-
ematographer and cameraman
who has shot several Wild life
documentaries for Discovery
Channel and The National Geo-
graphic.
It was a real feast for the eyes
with train and eagle made of torn

The event was a reminder of how

referring to Apple’s smartphone
and a new Mac operating sys-
tem.
“Steve may do a cameo,
maybe, because there is strong
evidence from multiple sources
he is getting back to good
health,” he said.

Jitender in Asian Championships’ quarterfinals

ounding off a second succes-
sive all-win day for India,
Olympian Jitender Kumar
(54kg) and Jai Bhagwan (60kg)
advanced to the quarterfinals with
contrasting wins at the Asian Boxing
Championships in Zhuhai, China on
Monday.
Jitender was the first to take the
ring and the Beijing Olympic quar-
terfinalist defeated Thailand’s
Chatchai Butdee in a thrilling con-
test. The two boxers were tied 4-4
after the regulation three rounds
and were locked 4-4 even on count-
back but Jitender won after three of
the five judges officiating the bout
declared him as the better of the
two boxers.
“I was leading in the first two
rounds but he became very aggres-
sive in the final round and equalised.
I was very tense after we were
found to be tied even after the
count-back. It was such a relief when
judges declared me winner for being
a better boxer,” a relieved Jitender
said from Zhuhai.
The 22-year-old Haryana-boxer
now takes on Enkhjargal Iderkhu in
the quarterfinals on Wednesday in
what would be his first bout against
the Mongolian. “I have not seen this
guy. The coaches are keeping an eye
on his bouts and will formulate a
strategy accordingly,” said Jitender.
Meanwhile in lightweight catego-
ry, Jai Bhagwan thumped Thailand’s
Adi Sailom 7-0 in a lopsided bout.
The Indian now takes on local favou-
rite Hu Qian Xun in the quarterfinals
on Wednesday. “Don’t go by the
scoreline, he was a tough customer,”
Jai said after his bout. “Next up is a
Chinese. He will have the home ad-
vantage but hopefully I would be
able to draw from my experience
and get past him,” Jai said.
On Tuesday, Olympic bronze med-
allist Vijender Singh will open his
campaign in the event against Uz-
bekistan’s Atoev Abbos. Abbos was
a light heavy weight boxer and won
the gold medal at the 2007 World

“I’d love to repeat Abhay Deol in
a film, but then I should also have
a role that suits him. I feel Abhay
has a very urban feel and you real-
ly have to think before casting
him,” Kashyap says.
Dev D was a contemporary take
on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s
Devdas and starred Mahi Gill and
Kalki Koechlin apart from Abhay.
“I love to repeat actors, but it
depends upon the role. For that
matter, I think Kay Kay Menon is
the most repeated actor in my
films because he just gets into any
character’s skin,” the director add-
ed.

Kashyap is also finicky about
