This section contains the System Performance layout and recommendations to ensure that your system performs optimally. You should consider all possible factors before deciding to change any of the parameters. The procedures described in this section do not replace the EarlyWatch Service that all R/3 customers should use.

Operating System Monitor

An R/3 instance runs within an operating system. The operating system provides the R/3 instance with the following resources: Virtual memory, physical memory, the CPU, file system management, physical disk(s), and the network. Bottlenecks in these areas can significantly affect R/3 System performance. The CCMS offers functions that let the user monitor these areas. The Operating System Monitor helps you locate the cause of a performance problem. If the source of the problem is in the operating system, it can be analyzed further and resolved using external tools or other external means. The performance indicators are: CPU load average and utilization Memory utilization

The R/3 configuration, services, and buffers must match the hardware configuration. The R/3 System provides a tool to monitor the most important statistics of an operating system. The information provided by this tool is almost platform-independent.

Program SAPOSCOL
The program SAPOSCOL is part of the standard R/3 System. There are two main differences between SAPOSCOL and other R/3 programs: special authorizations are needed to use SAPOSCOL. one SAPOSCOL per host can run independently of R/3 instances.

SAPOSCOL can be started before the instance is started, and can continue to run after the instance is stopped. SAPOSCOL collects data continually from the operating system. The background job SAP_COLLECTOR_FOR_PERFORMANCE takes performance data from the last 24 hours out of the shared memory, condenses it, and writes it to the performance database. Specific data can be compared for one or more hosts.

Program RFCOSCOL
The program RFCOSCOL is used to collect operating system data from hosts where no R/3 work process is running, for example, on a dedicated database server. The R/3 System starts RFCOSCOL remotely using a Remote Function Call. This program then reads the SAPOSCOL data from the shared memory and forwards it to the transaction using a Remote Function Call. Special Remote Function Call destinations must be maintained for this in the R/3 System.
