JOB DESCRIPTION Pharmacy Assistant Technical Officer Stores/Distribution Band 2 20 hours per week Principal/ Senior Technician

JOB PURPOSE To assist in the day-to-day duties of the Pharmacy Store & Distribution Unit. This post requires completion of units of NVQ level II training relevant to your area of work, involving providing evidence to support knowledge and work-based competencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Stores 1. To accept and sign receipt for deliveries of pharmaceutical products from suppliers, checking that delivery is for the pharmacy department. To unpack goods received and; Check items and quantities received match delivery notes Check are in good condition Check have adequate shelf life Check prices match those on delivery note Sign delivery note to accept goods into the pharmacy To accurately use the computer system to receive goods into the pharmacy store. To answer initial enquiries and when authorised, contact suppliers to resolve delivery queries on the telephone. To accurately put received goods into their correct location within the pharmacy, ensuring stock rotation. To distribute cardiac boxes to wards and departments and when necessary return any out of date boxes to the pharmacy and complete appropriate documentation. To accurately use the computer system to issue stock items to replenish stocks on wards and departments. This includes creating picking tickets and delivery notes for the required items.

To accurately select items on picking tickets ready for checking To accurately check items previously picked by another staff member and pack appropriately ready for delivery to required areas. To accurately check picking tickets created by other staff members to ensure correct issues. To accurately complete time sheets and record book for the Trust courier. To be responsible for processing the return of excess ward stock into the pharmacy stores, checking remaining appropriate shelf life and confirming quantities. To accurately record batch numbers and expiry dates of all vaccines issued to wards/ departments. To assist the Stores Manager with pharmaceutical stock control, including responsibility for performing stock checks, and IV room stock level and expiry date check. To report inaccuracies, expired and short dated stocks. To be responsible for the checking and recording of environmental temperatures and referring to manager in the event of any anomalies. In the absence of the Senior Assistant check all daily ward top ups are completed and refer to manager in the event of any problems.

General 1. 2. To complete units of NVQ II Pharmacy Services relevant to your areas of work. To have responsibility for the top-up of drugs to a designated ward/ department and to provide cover as necessary for any unavailable staff on their wards/department. To visit and replenish stock drugs to a pre-set level, ensuring stock is correctly stored and expiry dates are checked. To arrange disposal of expired pharmaceuticals according to set procedures. To follow all procedures and policies in the department. To attend promptly to all customers both internal and external and provide a high standard of customer service. To be responsible for the accurate data entry on the computer system To undergo training to ensure competence. To assist where appropriate with the training of new staff. To answer the telephone, and deal with queries from staff within the hospital and if necessary refer call to a technician or pharmacist to answer enquiries of a pharmaceutical nature. To maintain a portfolio of Continuous Professional Development.

To accept any other responsibilities as may be reasonably expected by the Chief Pharmacist.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This job description is intended to be an interpretation of the general scope and proposed responsibilities of the post at the time of writing and does not form part of the contract of employment. Therefore, you may be required to undertake other duties and responsibilities commensurate with your role. The job and priorities for action will be periodically reviewed. This will be done by the line manager in consultation with the post holder. The post holder will maintain patient confidentiality at all times, will recognise and adhere to the Trusts Standing Orders and standing Financial Instructions, will be responsible for Accurate computer data entry and data quality and will carry out their duties with regard to accepted standards of professional practice. Child/Adult Protection The post holder will be familiar with and comply with the London Child Protection Procedures and the associate guidance and protocols of South London Healthcare NHS Trust. The post holder has the responsibility to ensure that the welfare of all children and vulnerable adults is paramount and prioritised at all times and must be prepared to share information with the statutory agencies. Safeguarding Children Safeguarding children is everyones responsibility. Whatever your role within the trust the welfare of children should be your paramount consideration. In cases of suspected abuse or neglect the duty of care that member of South London Healthcare NHS Trust staff owes to a child, will take precedence over any obligation to the parent or other adult. All members of South London Healthcare NHS Trust staff who have contact with service users, or their families, should be familiar with guidance on child protection/ safeguarding children from; their own professional organisations, the trust and the London child protection procedures. Staff are also required to attend mandatory safeguarding children training.

Safeguarding Adults At Risk If you dont do something, who will? (NMC 2011) Living a life that is free from harm and abuse is a fundamental right of every person (Pan London 2011) The trust objective is to put patients at the front of everything we do to ensure that all patients experience care that is safe, maintains their dignity, treats them with respect and leads to agreed outcomes. Whatever your role within the Trust it is your responsibility to maintain patient safety and choice. You will be required to attend mandatory training in safeguarding adults, deprivation of liberty (DOLS) and mental capacity act (MCA). You should be familiar with SLHT safeguarding adults policy, your professional bodys guidance on safeguarding adults and Pan London procedures re safeguarding adults. It is your responsibility to keep updated as you are accountable for your actions. Data Protection Act The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patient, staff and Health Service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998). All employees of South London Healthcare NHS Trust must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. In circumstances where it is known that a member of staff has communicated to an unauthorized person, those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act (1998) also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorized disclosure of information.

Confidential Information All staff of South London Healthcare NHS Trust, have, a legal obligation to comply with all appropriate legislation in respect of Data, Information and IT Security and to comply with guidance issued by the Department of Health and the NHS Executive. This includes but is not limited to the Data Protection Act 1998, the Department of Health Confidentiality NHS Code of Practice, Records Management NHS Code of Practice, and Information Security NHS Code of Practice. Formal action may also be taken in line with the Trust Disciplinary Policy. Infection Prevention Our patients deserve to be protected from avoidable infection. Infection Prevention is everyones responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to Trust Infection Prevention Policies, which are available on the intranet, and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection prevention practice at all times. In particular, all staff have the following key responsibilities: Staff must practice effective hand hygiene, and be bare below the elbows in clinical areas, as per policy. Hand hygiene must be performed using soap and water, or alcohol hand gel in line with Trust policy. Staff members have a duty to attend infection prevention and hand hygiene training provided for them by the Trust as defined in the trust training needs analysis. Staff members who develop an infection that may be transmissible have a duty to contact Occupational Health for advice. All staff members have a duty to keep trust premises clean and tidy, to prevent buildup of clutter, and to report problems with cleanliness so that the problem can be rectified.
