I'm a housewife, no role in ADAG: Tina Ambani (Social)
NEW DELHI: Tina Ambani, wife of Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani, told the CBI court on Friday that she had no role in running any of the Reliance ADA group companies, distancing herself from the multi-billion dollar 2G spectrum scam. Statements of the former film star mirrored most of what her husband had said a day earlier while testifying in the same court. Like the billionaire industrialist, Tina Ambani also denied any knowledge about six companies under investigation by the CBI as part of one of India's most tracked financial scandals involving alleged irregularities in the grant of spectrum and licence in 2008. However, CBI special court judge OP Saini felt her answers were more forthright, prompting him to remark: "You are better than Ambani sahib." The CBI had been hoping to use the couple's statements to nail group company Reliance Telecom and three of its executives for their roles in flouting rules while applying for telecom licences in 2007. The CBI's stance was that since both held responsible positions in the group, they would have been aware of the actions of RTL and its executives. "I am a housewife, run a hospital and do a lot of social work," Ambani said at the start of her 90minute examination. "I have never been associated with any company of this group." Judge Saini offered her a chair to sit right at the outset, but she declined politely, saying: "No, I'm fine. I'll stand." She denied knowing anything about companies such as Tiger Traders (P) Ltd, Zebra Consultants (P) Ltd, Parrot Consultants (P) Ltd, AAA Consultancy Services (P) Ltd and ADAE Ventures (P) Ltd - companies the CBI alleges were used to create a complex structure to mask the real owners of Swan Telecom (P) Ltd (STPL), which was RTL. Ambani said she also didn't know Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, but knew Gautam Doshisocially, and as an eminent tax consultant. The three former executives of RTL had been arrested by the CBI on allegations of cheating, but are now out on bail. They have denied any wrongdoing. A day earlier too, the Reliance Group chairman had denied his relation to and knowledge of the six companies and contents of board meetings despite CBI lawyer UU Lalit showing evidence such as his signatures on bank account opening forms, fund transfer documents, and signatures under the minutes of board meetings. And to most other questions, he said he couldn't recall.
Lalit was forced to declare that the billionaire industrialist, also a prosecution witness, was "resiling from his previous statement" and wasn't supporting the CBI's case. Lalit then cross examined him as a defence witness.
spectrum can offer mobile telephony service by paying an extra fee of Rs 1,658.57 crore. The government put in place a new Unified Licence regime earlier this month with the aim of freeing players from limitations on use of technology for services and allow them to take benefits such as spectrum sharing and full Internet telephony under the new sectoral policy. Telecom companies would be allowed to offer mobile and fixed-line services using any technology. They can also provide Internet TV services. The new licences will be valid for 20 years, and would be renewable for another 10 years.
"Government is committed to protection of citizen's right as enshrined in the Constitution of India irrespective of the media used for communication," he added.
Additional spectrum case: Sunil Mittal tells court stay is still on (Legal)
NEW DELHI: Bharti Cellular CMD Sunil Mittal today claimed before a Special CBI court that there was a stay on the hearing in the additional spectrum case. Appearing for Mittal, senior advocate Harish Salve told Special CBI Judge O P Saini that the Supreme Court had said there was no need for clarification on its earlier interim order "postponing" the hearing against them till further orders. As per the April 26 interim order of the apex court, the stay on the proceedings before the trial court in the additional spectrum case still continues, he maintained. The apex court had in its April 26 interim order exempted Mittal and Essar Group promoterRavi Ruia from personal appearance in the trial court and had said the hearing against them will remain "postponed" until further orders. Salve today also informed the court that Mittal is at present out of India due to some meeting and he would not be able to appear before it on August 26, the date already fixed for hearing in the case. Advocate Mahesh Aggarwal, who appeared for Ruia, too informed the court that his client is also not in India and he will not be able to appear before it on August 26. The Special CBI Judge allowed the oral plea advanced by the advocates regarding non-appearance of both the corporate barons before him on August 26 and said he would hear CBI's arguments on the issue on that day. The April 26 interim order of the apex court exempting Mittal and Ruia from personal appearance was passed on two separate pleas filed by them challenging the special court's March 19 order summoning them as accused in the case. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had declined to pass any order on the issue of proceedings in the special court against Mittal and Ruia in a case of alleged irregularities related to allocation of additional 2G spectrum in 2002. "We cannot give clarification on everything. Order passed by this court is very clear and does not need any order", the apex court had said when Salve had submitted that the trial court had asked them to seek clarification of apex court's interim order.
