The always-outrageous MTV Video Music Awards has all gone to plan (well, as much as it ever can when you have that group of people in the same room). The awards were given out at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and below are the list of winners on the night.
Your house is on fire, what do save? My ass! And anyone else living. Possessions come and go. Dream job as a kid? Astronaut-scientist-musician. First album? Beatles Yellow Submarine. Ultimate festival line-up? Sade, Prince, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Residents, Rodriguez, Marshall Allens Sun Ra Arkestra, Keith Jarrett, Marcos Valle, Kelela, Total Freedom, Mark Ernestus, Omar-S, Kyle Hall, Kode9, Scratcha DVA, DJ Rashad, Cooly G, Peter Van Hoesen, Ron Morelli/L.I.E.S. crew, Bill Kouligas/PAN crew, Levon Vincent, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Terrence, Dixon, Anthony Shake Shakir, Regis, Autechre, Ryoji Ikeda, DJ Pete, DJ Randall. How do you discover new music? Through friends, online, in record shops. Worst job youve had? Waterslide monitor at a city pool when I was a teenager - I sat at the top of the slide, letting kids know when they could take their turn. There was a height stick and any kids that were too short I had to turn away. Shattered dreams on a daily basis, it was terrible. Which song do you wish you wrote? You are the Sunshine of my Life by Stevie Wonder. First gig in attendance? I saw the Beach Boys when I was seven. Any vices? Drugs, alcohol, moodiness, impatience. Plenty more where that came from...

ANBERLIN
THE KINGS ARMS
8PM, $40, ITICKET.CO.NZ
Its been four years since Floridas finest breached our shores, bringing their 2008 album New Surrender to life. Between then and now, Anberlin has continued to solidify their place as hard working bands, delivering the left-right hook of 2010s Brendan OBrien-produced Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place and 2012s Vital.
Its like they never went away. There was a time when Pete Doherty was the bastard godchild of every tabloid in Blighty. As the perfect drug addled poster boy for good ol fashioned yoof degradation, he pretty much kept News Of The World in the black for the better part of three years. But now, in the modern age of twitteratic rock pathos, its virtually impossible to shock and gloat about fame and infamy. Plus Murdochs filthy rag has shut down. Sleaze press exposure can no longer save a band. So whats left is a ditching of the grubby media antics and a return to making decent music. Early Shambles releases were all about the form over function and lacked substance. But this time there are glimpses of a more sober, more mature approach to rock n roll! Fireman does its best Clash impersonation, whilst New Pair is a remarkably good lil epic slow burner. Of course listening to Nothing Comes to Nothing, its clear beyond a doubt Babyshambles have hoovered up all of 80s Dunedin. This might be the most perfect pop song that Dave Kilgour never wrote. Carrying of the pilfering theme, we find Lily Allen robbed of her ironic hoedown Its Not Fair and sold back to us as the Shambles Fall From Grace. Disturbingly the song is oddly refreshing but also annoyingly catchy in a boot-scoot kinda way. More Clash moments in the Brit pop ballads Maybelline and Damon Albarn too will be banging the door down for his share of the royalties
on this one. The biggest surprise is the title track, which includes an infectious 30s Juke Joint Jive and scratched 60 samples from early demos. The musicianship has glimmers of professionalism, especially some gnarly Waits style keyboards, retains just enough of a threat of selfimplosion to keep us on the edge of the dance floor. Another surprise comes in the Jamaican dub groove of Dr. No, which is a serious consideration for my next Christmas party mix tape. Hints at the ironic miserable genius of Morrissey/ Marr rear up in Picture Me in the Hospital as the perfect offset to the cheerful early numbers. Despite the obvious kleptomania the deeper you get in to this album, the better the cuts - the reward for perseverance. Its only been five years since the Babyshambles and the Libertines ruled the music tabloids. But if they spent more time making albums like this and less time creating headlines they couldve really been contenders. Oh well, late starts better than nothing.

THE WIRE S5
SOHO, FROM 12.30PM
Its somewhat surprising that many of the fight scenes in Kick-Ass 2 arent all that memorable, given they were the only thing worth remembering in Jeff Wadlows Never Back Down. The highway sequence in particular is a victim of bad postproduction. Still, the sequels new director admirably keeps the manic mix of R-rated comedy and action seen in Matthew Vaughns original while omitting the terrible attempts at shock-drama that polluted Mark Millars comic the ultra-violence is already full-on without the need of animal decapitation, child slaughter and gang rape. While the crime-fighting craze has spread to other wannabe vigilantes, Mindy hangs up her Hit-Girl suit to give regular teen life a go. The parallel between the boy-band obsessions of dolled-up teenage
girls and the fanboy superhero adorations of costumed geeks is a surprisingly novel illustration of otherwise typical high-school identity themes. However, the huge focus on Hit-Girl comes at the expense of Kick-Ass himself, whos little more than a narrator in the film it makes a particularly heavy tragedy in the third act feel lighter than it should. Side-characters are also denied their times to shine, with Jim Carreys scene-stealing Colonel Stars and Stripes leaving the stage long before we want him to. Fortunately, Christopher Mintz-Plasse transcends as villainous douchebag The Motherfker hes like an angry Internet troll who actually goes through with his threats.
WRITTEN BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ
Created by David Simon (The Corner, Treme), the final season of The Wire expands its focus into the media specifically the role of newspapers in the twisted bureaucracy of big cities while still including vagaries of crime, law enforcement and politics in Baltimore. INCHING FORWARD
Dave Grohls Sound City aired recently. Its a tribute dingy-dive to the LA studio that made every great record from Rumours to Nevermind. On film both owners and engineers were quick to blame the studios demise on the coming of ProTools, laptops and home studios. Yet, in the same breath, they praised Reznor for using the very same weapons of their own mass destruction to create beautiful, if not darkly disturbing music during his time in their establishment. Far away from Sound Citys 70s decadence and stained shag pile queasiness, Reznors latest digs, The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, were swarming with cops and SWAT Choppers on standby for expected riots following the Trayvon Martin verdict. Deep underground, Reznor set up candles to mask the smell of sewage and to create a 3PM Cigar Lounge ambience in his cavenous lair. For weeks this secretive subterranean base has been home for his latest project, the recently reformed NIN. He was there to compile two live shows - one for the upcoming US arena circuit in September and another for the summer festival route - the first since their break up following the 2009s Wave Goodbye tour. That was a practical move to make room to work on The Social Network soundtrack, start a family, and set up a new band, How to Destroy Angels, which includes his new wife Mariqueen Maandig. For the last two decades Reznors Nine Inch Nails have forced brutal yet seditious, melodic techno-tronic hardcore rock down the throat of Corporate America. Starting with Pretty Hate Machine, and its primal screamer Head Like a Hole, Reznors drove innovation and creativity like a burning bus through a brick wall. He discovered, nurtured and then dismissed Marilyn Manson. Then, in 1994 he all but committed suicide on the noir-rock album The Downward Spiral, appropriately recorded in the house where Sharon Tate was murdered. And then went on to survive a heroin overdose in 2000. But today hes older and calmer. Hes still the respected elder statesman for the menacing end of alternative culture and the first person film director David Fincher [The Social Network] calls to score his movie. Hes also the bud Josh Homme dialed when he needed advice on how to bounce back from a near-death experience. Now hes droppin the 8th NIN album Hesitation Marks their first since The Slip in 2008. At 48 Reznors a more affable prospect than his intense and difficult reputation suggests. He fronts the media with a sort of ironic optimism. Downward Spiral felt like I had an unending bottomless pit of rage and self-loathing inside me, he told The Guardian, recently, and I had to somehow challenge something or Id explode. And referring to Hesitation Marks, he noted, This record was written as the other side of that journey (out from hate and self loathing). The despair, loneliness, rage and isolation still exist but is more contained. Clearly hes in a better place to express it and that rage is quieter. As the world spirals downward Reznors ascends in a spectacular reversal. During a tour with How to Destroy Angels, he remembered he was supposed to deliver the record company a contractual greatest hits package. So in 2012, keen to honor the debt, he wrote two new numbers for the collection; Satellite and Everything. The experience felt fresh and unburdened so he carried on, writing a whole new body of work. A new solitary writing approach, using a drum machine as the backbone of every track, hammered home the new Nails sound. Whilst the composition of Hesitation Marks went smoothly, the bands production did not, claiming early recruits King Crimsons Adrian Belew and Eric Avery (Janes Addiction) who came and went again due to the sheer intensity of the process. Finally, the product emerged, like an industrial variant of Radioheads In Rainbows, twitching with glitchy electronica and smelling like early 80s doomed House music. There was clearly a layer of maturity settling. For instance the David Lynch directed first single Came Back Haunted, whilst epilepsy inducing is a mainstream walk in the club compared to snarling earlier promos. Even a fans tribute to the very indie strum-along Everything even has Reznor riding an animated, candy colored unicorn. All testament to his new status as a humored stable, sober father to two young boys and the ultimate proof to every parent that their maladjusted child will come right in the end. Maybe. TITANFALL HANDS ON
XBOX 360, XBOX ONE & PC
Heavily rumoured before its reveal at E3 earlier this year, Titanfall still captured the hearts and minds of any that saw it, with EAs new shooter going on to win many best of E3 game critics awards - and for good reason. Its combination of fast paced, run up walls and shoot with mechs action looked like just the ticket for those (like me) who are looking for something new in their FPS rotation. At Gamescom I was one of the first in the world to find out that its not just clever video editing and obviously staged / choreographed sequences (youre not fooling anyone, guys.) It turns out, you see, that running up walls and stomping on dudes with massive robots is as fun as it sounds. The level I played was one of those that includes some level of narrative elements (the bit at the beginning, basically - only some of the levels have this sort of stuff, the rest are more traditional in structure.) Theyre Titanfalls nod to the singleplayer campaign that was otherwise dropped from the game about a year into its four-year development cycle. Its not super clear yet if this sort of stuff is going to go any deeper than giving the action some basic context, as it did here, but after playing the game Im not really sure Im bothered anymore. A big singleplayer fan, I was nervous about the prospects of a multiplayer-only shooter, but it might just be that in order to actually succeed in this space, all a game has to do is be spectacularly good - in which case Titanfall is more than in with a chance. The mix of old and new ideas, which seems to permeate every aspect of the game, should help people feel instantly familiar with it and yet give them ample opportunity to learn - a masterful piece of design, should they pull it off. Based on my experiences at Gamescom, I suggest thats exactly what theyve achieved, and Titanfall might actually give Call of Duty a run for its money in the its a shooter but its also a game genre. This changes everything, I told Drew shortly after my session - and I meant it. Titanfall is headed to Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC next year.
