CHICAGOChicago has always been the site of big AHR Expos, and this years Show was the largest and best attended in the Shows 82-year history. Final results show that 57,727 people attended the Show. This included a record 39,844 attendees and 17,883 exhibitor personnel. The attendee record was about 5% higher than the registered attendance at the 2008 Show in New York City. Net exhibit space also was a record with 428,884 ft2, which is 9.85 acres (38 845 m2/4 hectares) of exhibits. This is 5% larger than the previous record set in 2006 in Chicago. Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company (IEC), attributed the records in part to the many new energy-efficient technologies and products in the marketplace, as well as pent-up demand for new equipment. We also hope this is an indication that the economy is on the upswing and will continue to improve, he said. Products, not records, were on the minds of attendees, and there was more on the floor than could be absorbed in the three-day event. Brothers Matt and Teddy Lech of New Jersey were among the thousands waiting for the Show to open on Monday morning. We plan to stay all three days so we dont miss anything, added Teddy Lech. Both said they that were interested in heat pump technology and other products that provide efficiency. Our customers are educated now, and this is what they want, said Teddy Lech. The show has been outstanding for us this year, said Mark Handzel, director of marketing for Xylem RCW. This is the best show that we have.

Intelli-Hood by Melink Is Product of the Year

The Intelli-Hood kitchen ventilation control by Melink was named the Product of the Year at the Innovation Awards ceremony at the 2012 AHR Expo. The product was one of 10 products selected to receive Innovation Awards in various industry-related categories. The Melink product was the winner in the Ventilation category. The product reduces the exhaust and makeup fan speeds during idle, non-cooking conditions, yielding fan energy savings of up to 90% and conditioned air savings of up to 50%. I am surprised to receive the award, and very honored, said Melink engineering manager Bryan Miller, who accepted the award. Energy efficiency and sustainability permeates through [Melink] and that spirit is shown in this product. The Innovation Awards have been a highlight of the last 10 AHR Expos. This Show [AHR Expo] is the place that people in the industry can go to see the latest, the best, the most innovative products, said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company, which manages AHR Expo. Its appropriate that we honor the best of the best, but these awards reflect the entire Show. Proceeds from entry fees from the 2012 AHR Expo Innovation Awards competition have been donated to Metropolitan Family Services, a more than 150-year-old organization that provides services and counseling for families in need in the Chicago area. The Innovation Awards are cosponsored by ASHRAE, the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and IEC. to 20 tons. The solar HVAC systems use solar thermal collectors which are designed to take energy from the sun and produce a cooling effect in the summer and a heating effect in the winter. Our goal is to introduce this kind of product that in Europe and Italy are almost a consolidated marketsolar cooling, KU Solar COO Massimo Galli told ASHRAE Journal. And now we are trying to understand if the U.S. is the same kind of market. SKY CPC 58 solar collectors for forced circulation hot water heating systems are made of a series of doubled-walled borosilicate glass pipes, welded at the end. A vacuum is induced between the two glass walls, and the internal wall is coated with a recycled multilayer metallic selective material which maximizes the absorption of the suns energy. http://tinyurl. com/88ay7o2 Galli said winter temperatures in northern Italy, near the Alps mountain range, are commonly from 5F to 15F (2.7C to 8.3C). Very much like Chicago. So, the AHR Expos location served as an ideal locale for the company to introduce its products.

Global nature of the HVAC&R industry is reflected in the growing participation of international exhibitors and attendees. The international exhibitors represented 35 countries.

International Exhibitors Growing Part of Show

CHICAGOA record 422 international exhibitors participated in this years AHR Expo, continuing a trend of growing international participation, both in companies exhibiting and international attendees. The previous exhibitor record was 400 set in 2006 in Chicago. International attendance also has been increasing. This years Show had 6,508 international visitors, slightly less than the record 8,072 international visitors at the Las Vegas Show in 2011. I think the Show in general is becoming better known as a world event, said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company. International exhibitors came from greater distances for many of the same reasons that domestic firms attend AHR Expo: to display their products, to actually make sales and to connect synergistically with other companies in their industries. For some international companies, however, there was an additional reason: to announce Were here. An example was KU Solar, which was created via a merger of Kloben, Italys largest manufacturer of solar thermal equipment, and Universal, one of Italys largest solar integration companies. The new company exhibited at AHR Expo to announce its intention to distribute solar HVAC systems in the U.S. The technology is widespread in Europe, but America remains largely untapped. The new company introduced a scalable product line of packaged systems and components, with units ranging in size from 3

ST. LOUISWhite-Rodgers, a business of Emerson, kicked off a yearlong celebration of its 75th anniversary at AHR Expo. In 1936, a small group of engineers from Emerson Electric developed a new hydraulic action, temperaturecontrol device for use in thermostats, stacks and other heating and ventilation applications. This group formed Missouri Automatic Controls in 1937 and soon became White-Rodgers Electric Company, named after principal engineers Jim Rodgers and Chesterfield White.

2012 AHR EXPO

Smart Grid Becoming Critical
CHICAGOSenior leaders of Danfoss talked about the market and policy outlook for 2012 during the companys 17th annual press conference at the AHR Expo. Danfoss North America President John Galyen outlined three specific climate and energy challenges facing the industry energy efficiency, the Smart Grid and refrigerants. Specifically, Galyen noted that the Smart Grid is becoming increasingly critical to HVAC since buildings consume 40% of all energy in the U.S. and demand is estimated to increase by 21% by 2030. The way supply and demand are synced, the management of electrical power, and improving the efficiency of existing infrastructure, will continue to be critical issues moving forward. Well need to be aware of three main elementsdemand response, energy efficiency and load management. Technologies like variable speed enable end users and utilities better load control and demand response benefits, he said. Robert Wilkins, vice president, public affairs, said there is little change in policy expected at the national level. Meanwhile, manufacturers are moving ahead with developing equipment for hydrocarbons, using CO2 in supermarkets and industrial refrigeration, and considering HFC-32 for air conditioning. The HVAC&R world continues to change, Wilkins said. Its becoming more and more complex, with more refrigerants, more system types and new regional differences.

LG introduced its new Multi V III VRF technology.

AHRI Product Certification Called Turning Point for VRF

CHICAGOLG introduced its new Multi V III VRF technology and talked about the future of VRF in an interview with ASHRAE Journal staff. The Multi V III (http://tinyurl.com/7wghlvw) features a COP of 4.58 at full load, which translates to a 14% improvement over the Multi V II. The part-load COP for the V III is 5.3. In addition to gains in efficiency, the Multi V III creates less noise (77 dBA) and has a smaller footprint. As for the future of VRF, the VRF market in the U.S. is expected to reach $7.3 billion in 2013, a 40% increase over 2011. This expectation is being fueled in part because AHRI has added a Product Performance Certification Program for VRF manufacturers, said Teddy Hwang, executive vice president, global sales and marketing, and Kevin McNamara, vice president of commercial air conditioning. I see this as a turning point in the industry, said McNamara. This is a performance-based certification done by a third party that enables engineers to see how VRF brands and technology compare with each other and with traditional HVAC technologies.
