GE Global Research

For our scientists, inspiration can come from a rock or a sunset or a supercomputer. But mostly it comes from our dream of what the future can be. A world thats cleaner, greener, more efficient, more intelligent and more connected, where people have greater access to essentials like energy, water and healthcare. A better world.

We Look at What the World Needs

The future is alive with possibilities. And were working to turn that promise into solutions that make the world better. By developing new technologies, advanced manufacturing capabilities, intelligent softwareand so much more that affects our lives and workwere bringing to life the technological foundation of the future.

GE Global Research

Advanced Materials
It takes significant scientific and engineering skills to develop and adapt the advanced materials that both strengthen components and systems and reduce their overall weight, or that provide superior heat and fatigue resistance. You see these advanced materials such as composites, superalloys and ceramicsused in high-performance applications like locomotives and power generators. Our materials researchers and engineers are finding solutions when weight is critical in components like carbon-fiber aircraft fan blades and containment caseswhen wind turbine blades must capture as much energy as possiblewhen components of medical diagnostic systems require a combination of special electrical and magnetic characteristics and strengthand when oil and gas drilling equipment must withstand the unforgiving environment miles below the ocean surface.

GE is working to develop high-performance nano-composite permanent magnets that use dramatically smaller amounts of the expensive rare earth elements that are critical to the performance of wind turbine generators.

GE is working on integrated circuits that can withstand temperatures as high as 300C. ICs performing at such high temperatures will improve measurement accuracy and signal conditions for sensors and instruments.

GEs ceramic matrix composites have the temperature-resistant capability of ceramics and the durability of metallic alloys, while providing more efficiency than the alternatives.

A Relentless Drive to Invent

Sustainable Power
GE researchers are developing a broad array of technologies to deliver cleaner, more sustainable ways to power the planet. This includes developing new systems to capture more wind more efficiently, generate power from sunlight more cost-effectively and leverage abundant sources of energy from natural gas. Were developing new technologies that help integrate plug-in hybrid electric vehicles into the electric grid through smart charging stationspart of a larger effort to make the grid smart enough to handle a more diverse and widely distributed infrastructure. Were even bringing renewable energy onto the grid, while maintaining or improving the reliability and quality of power. And with more than 50 years of experience in combustion technology for gas turbines and aircraft engines, weve been able to develop, model and rapidly test new, more efficient combustion concepts and designs for such industries as aviation and oil and gas.

Were working on cutting the cost of installing a solar-panel system in a typical home by more than half by developing technologies that simplify and standardize the installation process.

Interdisciplinary GE teams helped launch high-performance energy storage devices that can function in harsh environments, for use in backup power and, eventually, hybrid buses and trucks.

GE Global Research is identifying ways to use water more efficiently. By recovering wastewater and increasing the number of waterreuse cycles, GE is finding solutions for water-scarce areas around the world.

Building Things That Matter

GE Global Research

Intelligent Software
Our brightest minds are developing software and analytics that will connect more people and businesses to the nearly 50 billion GE machines and devices that build, move, power and cure our world. We call it the Industrial Internet. For example, by making performance information available onlinefrom jet engines to manufacturing equipmentGE software solutions will allow technicians to know about potential problems immediately, which will reduce shutdowns. Advanced decision-making tools are also being developed for a range of industries. For example, molecular prognostic tests in development will transform healthcare from being a process of seeing and treating disease to one that anticipates disease. Were also developing vehicle management systems that safely and efficiently schedule needed avionics and engine-part replacements. And were using custom algorithms to help determine the best locations for wind turbines...and leveraging cloud-based computing to extend the reach of any complex system.

Images from supercomputers are helping GE understand material properties based on their molecular structures, such as assessing the performance of superalloys in high-pressure turbine blades.

GE is working to uncover cancer disease processes and develop predictive/prognostic tests using imaging that quantifies proteins in a tissue samplewhich may lead to more tailored treatments options.

Similar to air traffic control, GEs RailEdge Movement Planner enables railroads to analyze rail routes and traffic so that trains can run at optimal speeds, which boosts productivity, reduces costs and lowers carbon emissions.
