PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

3RD TERM AS SOUTHWEST PRESIDENT 4TH TERM SOUTHWEST E-BOARD

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

School is back in session and our first round of MSAP classes have been conducted. I would like to thank our Safety Director Vic Piorkowski for his continued efforts assuring training in the 10th grade drivers ed classes. I would also like to mention V.P. Fred Glennon and member Robin Reynolds who have assisted in conducting classes as well. Fred and Robin will be presented with patches for their completion of MSAP training. Well done Safety team. This past month we headed up to Sarasota for the August State meeting held by West Coast Chapter. We had a group of 8 bikes and 12 members ride up and attend the meeting. Thank you all who chose to spend their day with the ABATE family. We closed out the month supporting the Bikers against Bullying event hosted by

Rebel Cycles and the German American Social club. What a great ride. I had pulled my back out the day before so I was honored to lead the group on a 94 mile ride in our truck. This event turned out great for our Chapter. We picked up some new members, a couple new ads and met some great people from other organizations as well as getting some donated booth space at this years Oktoberfest. I look forward to the next few months as there are many Can you see me rides on the books. We will join in with several chapters for an October ride to Sarasota followed by the Southwest Chapters ride with the Ft Myers L.A.M.A.s, Latin American Motorcycle Association, and the Lost Riders who are helping us get the message out. Stay tuned as we cruise into Season with more rides and events. Til then,

Ride Safe, Ride Often

Wayne

VICE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

1ST TERM AS SOUTHWEST VICE PRESIDENT 1ST TERM SOUTHWEST E-BOARD

Hello Brothers and Sisters, As the summer season comes to a close and we continue to endure the afternoon downpours and heat on the road, we look ahead to the days and nights when the environment is more conducive to our motorcycle lifestyle. The one thing that we dont look forward to is the return of the congested roadways. Along with the congestion comes the erratic driving practices of the people that feel that the road is theirs and that traffic laws dont apply to them. This is where our focus should be in the future months ahead. We do a great job at getting our word out to the motorcycle public at bike nights and events, but is this actually our target audience? I believe our attention should be directed at the cage drivers that are out there killing our friends, family. Our brothers and sisters. But how do we do this?????? For me, it all begins with 2 words, THANK YOU!

These are powerful words. Much more powerful and effective than the other 2 words that we are accustomed to using when we are cruising the streets on 2 wheels. We all know our reaction when we are being tailgated or cut off out there. But what is our reaction when a driver does the right thing for us? Gives us the right of way? Sees us and then uses their blinkers before changing lanes? Stopping well behind us at a red light? How often do we actually say thank you? How often do we even waive and smile? So instead of focusing our attention to the bad driver when we are beside them at a red light, lets focus on the positive. I love the reaction that I get when I ask a person to roll their window down and then thank them for whatever the pro motorcycle behavior was that they just exhibited. A friend of the motorcycle community was just created, and their driving practice, whatever it was, is going to be repeated. Thank You, such a simple gesture but such powerful results. So as we head into the Season , dont ever take our eyes off the terrible drivers, but lets never miss the chance to promote positive driving habits and make a friend..Say thank you. So for everyone out their and for all the hard work that you do, all I can say is .. THANK YOU. Ride safe,

Fred

How many times have we blown it

when a final offer is made and we didnt accept? And, we know we should have accepted. WhatDEAR FELLOW ever there was to gain and possibly ABATE MEMBERS enjoy, is now lost forever. We remember when the Buells were being offered for the last time, as the brand, as announced by the Harley-Davidson parent company. They were no longer going to be produced. We also recall when the company that produced the Indians was reported to be in serious financial trouble. We knew it was written in the trade papers that the bikes would no longer be available. Some missed out (if, you like Indians) on that beautiful red Indian Chief, with those big, wide, comfortable beach bars! The signs were there, that something was about to happen. However, we didnt act in time. The signs about the end times, of our current existence here on earth, appear to be very clear that the end is near. The same Books of the Bible that have predicted/ prophesized with 100% accuracy of events that have already taken place, are now predicting the signs and how the end times will come about. The prophecies that needed to come about, before the end times could happen, have already been fulfilled. Here are just some of the many prophecies that have been fulfilled, to clear the way for the end times: It was predicted in Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and in Nehemiah that Israel would be scattered all over the world. Jesus gave the prophecy that Jerusalem would suffer destruction. And, it occurred in 70 A.D. Luke 21:24 Then, in many passages the scriptures predict the re -gathering of Israel just before the end times. Ezekiel 20:34 - "I will bring you from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered -- with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath." And, what happened on May 14, 1948? Isaiah 66:8 NIV - "Who

has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children." The labor probably refers to the holocaust that occurred in WW II, only a few years earlier. Who would have guessed, living at that time, that while the Jews were in their most dire straits, in only a very short time, their nation would be reborn! The language of the Jews to be restored Before the re-gathering and after the dispersal, the language of the Jews was described as being Yiddish. Now, a more pure form of Hebrew is spoken. Zephaniah 3:8-10 KJV "For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, [even] the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering". Israels currency is to be restored - Ezekiel 45:12-16 NIV - "The shekel is to consist of twenty gerahs. Twenty shekels plus twentyfive shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.... All the people of the land will participate in this special gift for the use of the prince in Israel." Israel will prosper - Isaiah 26:6 NIV - "In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit." Isaiah 35:1-2 NIV - "The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy...." II Timothy 3:1-5,7 NIV "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Matthew 24:6-8 NKJV And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilence and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. The primary idea is that you need not know all of the many scriptures to know that Gods word is true. What He says will happen, will actually happen! The track record is there. Most Biblical scholars predict the next event will be. 1 Corinthians 15:51 and 52 Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Thessalonians 4:17

Great Tribulation, which is ahead. Matthew 24:21 Say this short little prayer and mean every word of it with the conviction and love in your heart. "Dear

God, the Father of Jesus Christ, I confess that I am a sinner and have been separated from You. I receive forgiveness of my sins by the finished work on the cross. I repent and accept this gift of repentance and I wish to be free in you. I confess with my mouth that your son Jesus is my savior and died for me. I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead. I receive Jesus into my heart and ask Him to become the center of my life. I ask, in the Name of Jesus. Amen."

Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to
meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. The question is, Are you ready? Those in Christ, living and the dead shall be taken up to avoid the

E15 is approved for motorcycle use later.

(Learn more: Intermediate-Level Ethanol Blends Engine Durability Study)

AMA FUEL FOR THOUGHT

E15 BACKGROUND
E15 is a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume. Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved its use in 2001-and-newer light-duty vehicles, which include cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles, the EPA hasnt approved its use in motorcycles or ATVs however. Weve repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to motorcycle and ATV engines caused by the inadvertent use of E15, which is now becoming available at gas stations, says Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. Anecdotally, we hear about problems with motorcycle engines related to ethanol in gasoline, Allard says. The AMA wants motorcycles and ATVs to be part of a scientific study on the effects of E15 so that motorcyclists know what to expect if they inadvertently put E15 in their gas tanks, or if

The AMA hosted an E15 Fuel for Thought lobby day on June 19, 2013, which was modeled after the AMAs highly successful Capitol Hill Climb kids dirtbike lobbying day held in Washington, D.C. on May 26, 2011. The lobby day helped educate lawmakers about the need to research the possible harmful effects of E15 fuel on motorcycle and allterrain vehicle engines. Recently, U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) introduced H.R. 875 to repeal the EPAs decision approving the use of E15 in certain vehicles. The bill also would bar the agency from granting further decisions on the use of the fuel until the EPA obtains an independent scientific analysis of the effects of the E15 blend. There have been several tests highlighting E15s harmful effects on engines, Sensenbrenner says, but they have all been dismissed by the EPA. Therefore, we must force the EPA to stop the use of E15 fuel until the serious safety, durability, performance and environmental concerns have been addressed, he says. We have a responsibility to ensure that Americans using gas-powered machinery whether it be cars and boats or chainsaws and lawnmowersare not put at risk due to faulty fuel that has not been vetted.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT ~ SEPT. 2013 Submitted by Ken TEDDYBEAR Miller

Good Morning Freedom Fighters: From ABATE of Florida, Inc. Darrin Scribe Brooks Hey Everyone, Here is the latest Florida Motorcycle Riders survey from CUTR (Center for Urban Transportation Research). They are the host facility for the MSC (Motorcycle Safety Coalition). This is the coalition that ABATE has a seat on and that I have talked about many times before. I would like you to please take the survey and where it asks for "other" input ABATE of Florida, Inc. as the source in which you receive the most information about motorcycle safety. Please pass this along to all your email list, it does provide us with great information. And by adding "ABATE" to your answers, it will allow me to see if they actually report all the responses, or just the responses that CUTR wants. A few minutes of your time could improve the safety of Floridas roads. Were looking for honest feedback from Florida motorcyclists so that we can evaluate the effectiveness of various safety promotion efforts and continue to improve traffic safety in Florida. Your opinion will be compiled as part of a research study sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation and conducted by the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida (IRB Study #Pro2384). You must be a Florida resident and at least 18 years old to participate. The way it works is simple: 1. Click here <http://bike.mcsurvey.org> to complete the survey online. The survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete. 2. After you complete the survey, enter to win a motorcycle jacket, a one-year membership to AAA with motorcycle coverage or an LED light kit! We take your privacy very seriously. All information collected will be held strictly confidential and remain anonymous. If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please e-mail us at motorcyclesafety@cutr.usf.edu. If you have already completed the survey this year, thank you for your participation. Sincerely, The Center for Urban Transportation Research University of South Florida posal (HB 5), which is filed for the 2014 legislative session, goes further than a measure approved this year that seeks to stop texting while driving. Slosberg's bill, for example, also would not allow minors to talk on cell phones while they drive. Minors could get ticketed for non-moving violations. Slosberg has been heavily involved in traffic-safety issues after the death of his daughter in a car accident.

DIAZ DE LA PORTILLA PROPOSES 'AARON COHEN' HIT-AND-RUN ACT

JUSTICES TO HEAR ARGUMENTS IN RED-LIGHT CAMERA CASES

The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments Oct. 8 in cases from Orlando and Aventura about the legality of local red-light camera ordinances. The court set the date Tuesday. Two appeals courts have taken different stances about the ordinances, with the 5th District Court of Appeal rejecting Orlando's ordinance because it said the measure conflicts with state traffic laws. The 3rd District Court of Appeal earlier upheld Aventura's ordinance. The case could have broader implications, as other cities have adopted redlight camera ordinances. BILL TO TEENS: PUT DOWN THAT PHONE AND DRIVE State Rep. Irv Slosberg, a Boca Raton Democrat who has long pushed for traffic safety, filed a bill this week that would bar youths under age 18 from using mobile phones while driving. The pro-

Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, has introduced a measure (SB 102) that would make it a second-degree felony for a motorist who fails to remain at the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injuries. The "Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act would also require the court to revoke for three years the driver's license of a person convicted of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury or death. The act is named after Aaron Cohen, a businessdevelopment manager at Esserman Automotive Group, who was killed when he, along with another bicyclist, was struck by a vehicle on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami in February 2012. The driver, Michele Traverso, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in January to 364 days plus two years of community control. Traverso, according to reports, was operating the vehicle with a suspended license, fled the scene, and turned himself in the next evening after calling his attorney rather than 911. It is already a felony to leave the scene of a crash that involves a death. The act would impose mandatory sentences of three years in jail if the responsible party flees the scene that involves injury to another individual, seven years for a serious bodily injury, and 10 years if the crash results in a death. Rising Motorcycle Fatalities April 25, 2013 Over the past few years, we have read numerous articles which claim that while motor vehicle related fatalities have been decreasing, motorcycle related fatalities have been increasing. An article published this week on NICHES.com made that same point. Instinctively, this does not make sense. With the motorcycling community placing more of an emphasis on training and education, one would think that we would be seeing a decrease in motorcycle related fatalities. If you go to the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) you can find the fatality statistics through 2010. For illustration purposes lets look at motor vehicle fatalities from 2005 to 2010 since that is the last year in which NHTSA has reported data. While it is true you will see motor vehicle fatalities are generally dropping, motorcycle fatalities during this period have gone up and come down. Interestingly, NHTSA further breaks down motor vehicle fatalities per 100,000 registered motor vehicles. However, they do not do that for each type of motor vehicle. It is only done for motor vehicles as a whole. Unfortunately, one cannot find a breakdown of registered motorcycles per year on the NHTSA site (to be accurate I should say I couldnt). However, if you go to the website for the Federal Highway Administration you can find motorcycle registrations by year and then compare those numbers to the reported fatalities from NHTSA. Those numbers break down as follows: 2005 - 6,227,146 registered motorcycles and 4,576 motorcycle related fatalities 2006 - 6,678,958 registered motorcycles and 4,837 motorcycle related fatalities 2007 - 7,138,476 registered motorcycles and 5,174 motorcycle related fatalities 2008 - 7,752,926 registered motorcycles and 5,312 motorcycle related fatalities 2009 - 7,929,724 registered motorcycles and 4,469 motorcycle related fatalities 2010 - 8,009,503 registered motorcycles and 4,502 motorcycle related fatalities When we look at those numbers, the motorcycles fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles from 2005 to 2010 break down as follows: 2005 73.48 2006 72.43 2007 72.48 2008 68.52 2009 56.36 2010 56.21 As you can see, when we factor in registrations, we see that since 2005, motorcycle fatalities per 100,000 registered motorcycles are

trending down as well. If that is the case, why dont we see any reporting on that fact? It is because simply reporting numbers without context is easy. It takes work to actually find relevant data to put the numbers into perspective. Those who have no interest in either motorcycles or motorcyclists are not going to do the work it takes to report accurately. After all, reporting that motorcyclists are killing themselves on the highways makes a much better story than reporting that our communitys emphasis on training and education seems to be having a positive impact on highway safety. Congress Takes a Break, You Should Take Advantage.

The United States Congress is taking its traditional August recess. In keeping with a very old school tradition, Congress will be vacating D.C. for the longest, hottest month. Back in the day, before modern air conditioning, Congress would leave D.C. for the month because it was too miserable, DC being a literally, a swamp. When the idea for a national capitol came about, no State wanted to use valuable farmland so Virginia and Maryland kindly donated the cesspool that was the headwaters of the Potomac River. The

land was donated because it was deemed worthless. The August break was well deserved because the Members of Congress rarely traveled home during session. Most opted to stay in D.C. boarding houses rather than take the long stagecoach ride to their home state. Currently, the recess begins August 5th and runs through September 6th. Most of the Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate will be spending significant time in their home state offices. The MRF encourages you to schedule a brief meeting or go to a town hall and meet with your federal elected officials. There are many important issues that need your time and attention. The most important issue is the Motorcycle Only Roadside Checkpoint elimination bill. HR 1861 is a bill before the US House of Representatives. This bill would end the future funding of any motorcycle only roadside checkpoints from the Federal government. It is crucial that we obtain a large number of cosponsors on this legislation to move this bill forward. Please set aside some time to meet with your Federal elected officials this August. Should you need any help setting up meetings or for more information do not hesitate to contact the MRF at 202-546-0983 or Jeff@MRF.org I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. --Winston Churchill See you in the wind, TEDDYBEAR

Brothers and Sisters, During the last three months I have been a passenger in the cars of three friends. Two nonriding and one a rider. All used their cell phones while driving. Not for "just calling" someone, actually reading and typing while they drove. I mentioned the following information to them without losing my head. October 1st, in the state of Florida, it becomes a secondary offense to text while operating a vehicle. Meaning ... if you get pulled over for another violation, you can be sited for texting and driving. You may think ... ...hmmm how is this possible, by the time the officer pulls you over you can stash the phone. Well, I myself, am not too concerned about that presently. The points system, affecting insurance premiums,

of the state was updated to include two points to be assigned if a texting ticket is given in a school safety zone and six points will be assessed if its found that the unlawful use of a wireless communications device results in a car crash. That may be hard to prove, however, since this new law specifically states a driver's phone records can be used as evidence only if a crash results in a death or injury. The seatbelt law started as a secondary offense .. now it's a primary violation and has been since July 1986. I can only hope that my MRO (Motorcycle Rights Organization), ABATE of Florida, Inc., Southwest Chapter together with the public outcries, can force the hand of our State Government to make this a Primary Offense. We have made it this far ... let's just keep pushing it onto the discussion table.
Moving my feet in a forward direction! Best Regards, Barbara L. Bardell aka Babs xo
