Wipro presents earthian 2013 the 3rd edition of the annual Sustainability Program for Schools and Colleges.
For Schools- Schools will need to do a set of activities that will help students learn about various sustainability issues related to water like quality, demand, water trail and the interconnections of water to other areas (waste, energy, biodiversity, equity considerations etc). The write-up will need to report the activities in a creative manner and also write an essay displaying the interconnections. For Colleges: Through an in-depth well researched essay we encourage teams to explore multiple dimensions of a certain kind of human progresses and its socio-environmental impacts. We encourage teams to critically examine the role of science and school/college education in advancing linear based design thinking and associated nancial and social structures. Are they congruent with natural systems and cycles? Winners receive 10 awards of Rs. 150000 each, a trophy and certicates. SPONSORED RESEARCH PROGRAMME


The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), under its Sponsored Research Programme, invites proposals from individual/group of scholars/institutions for commissioning research studies in the following Thrust Areas of Social Science Research.

Themes under Sponsored Research Programme on Uttarakhand


A. Development strategy of Uttarakhand
Sustainable development, carrying capacity and regulation of economic activities including tourism. Input-output analysis and economic linkages of Uttarakhand hill regions with the plains. Assessment of current development strategy in the context of hill/plain areas of Uttarakhand. Migration and its social, economic and political dynamics.

B. Gender issues and development


Role of women in Uttarakhand economy. Disaster widows and their coping strategies.

C. Disaster management issues


Disasters and their socio-economic costs. Impact assessment of rehabilitation measures. Disaster map of Uttarakhand, resettlement/relocation and its socio-economic and cultural implications. Role of government, Panchayati Raj Institutions, NGOs and community-based organisations in disaster management.

D. Socio-psychological impact of disasters


Disasters and their impact on women, children and aged population. Structures of coping with loss due to disasters.

E. Governance issues
Institutions, governance and service delivery.

Conditions for Consideration


a) b) c) d) The themes under the sponsored research program focus on the issues of contemporary relevance, less explored areas of study and those involving policy implication. In undertaking research on these themes, the ICSSR expects that the research will develop new understanding and insight on the issues which become bench mark in terms of concept, theory, methodology and research outcomes. Given the signicance of the sponsored research, the nancial support from ICSSR would be of higher scale varying from a minimum rupee of fteen lakh to seventy lakh depending on the nature of research. Given the scale and nature of research under sponsored program, the ICSSR expects that the research will be interdisciplinary in character and that researchers from different discipline will constitute a team. Research teams may consist of more than one department/Centre/institute. In some cases, individual researchers will also be considered. Proposals will be accepted under this scheme from scholars/institutions in a eld of study with a proven record of research in the proposed eld of study.

M. Phil. in Development Studies


at the

G B Pant Social Science Institute, Allahabad (A Constituent Institute of the University of Allahabad) Announcement for Admissions 2013
The G B Pant Social Science Institute is commencing the MPhil Development Studies Programme in the year
2013. This shall be an interdisciplinary course. The Institute also has a Doctoral Programme in social sciences.

The MPhil Programme shall enable students to critically analyse the dominant mainstream view of development and alternate theoretical foundations of development from interdisciplinary perspectives; relate to the real life situation of the Third World with special reference to Indian development experience; train rigorously in quantitative and qualitative methods to test development theories and experiences as well as explore new paradigms; and to engage with new paradigms in social sciences, undertake further research and create knowledge of development, as well as contribute to policy. The MPhil programme is a four semester programme. The rst two semesters are devoted to course work. Students are expected to complete six compulsory papers and two optional papers during this period. In the third semester, students shall begin working on the dissertation topic in consultation with a supervisor and submit the same by the end of the fourth semester. A student who earns CGPA of 6.0 in the course work and has some research experience and publication to his/her credit would be considered for direct admission in D. Phil programme.
There are 15 seats in the programme.

For admissions in the two courses, namely the MPhil in Development Studies and the Doctoral Programme students are required to take the Combined Research Entrance Test (CRET) of the University of Allahabad in any of the social sciences subjects including Anthropology, Ancient History, Behaviourial and Cognitive Sciences, Business Administration (MBA), Commerce, Defence, Economics, Education, Gandhian Studies, Geography, Globalisation and Development Studies, Medieval and Modern History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. The last date for submission of online forms is September 10, 2013 available on the website www.auadmission.co.in. Those with JRF of the UGC in any of the social science subjects are also required to register in CRET by September 10, 2013. Those desirous of admission in the MPhil Programme must contact the Institute within 20 days of announcement of the CRET results.
