Nothings Wrong With Us If I asked all gays in this room to stand up, probably, there will only be a handful

of out gays who will do so. Perhaps, there will even be none. This can be explained by the fact that almost everyones eyes will be on you. Others might say: Sayang, pogi pa naman. Or the person beside you might say: Sabi sayo, bakla yun eh. In a patriarchal society like ours, coming out is a tedious long and painful process. I am just one of the few brave homosexuals who were able to fully express their sexuality as early as seven. When I was in elementary, I had crushes on my male classmates. Most of my friends are were girls. I acted like a girl. I wanted to be courted by my crushesmy crushes to court me. I wanted Barbie dolls and other girly stuff. I even dreamed dreamt of having a monthly periodto have menstruation and being pregnant someday. These are the things which society deems as inappropriate for me and for the rest of the homosexuals. However, I already accepted when I was in high school that I dont have the capacity to menstruate and give birth to a child. In high school, I have accepted that I wont have a monthly period nor will I get pregnant , Bbut I think that loving someone of the same sex should be something that can be considered viewed as normal one. Its simply unfair. Society cannott force me to be in love with girls and marry a lady in the future. Neither can it impose a standard that a happy family can only be formed by heterosexual couples. I remember a high school classmate who asked me how much do I pay for boys. He shares the societys generalization about us---that since no guy can truly, genuinely love us- for who we are. That we have to, we use money in order for us to feel that loved and perhaps, even pleasure. He is wrong, ultimately wrong. There are also homosexual relationships that last not because of money. I then encourage bigotschallenge those with this mindset to widen their perspectives. In liberal democracies, children adoptedchildren adopted by homosexual couples express support for the federal law to grant legal benefits to their parentsfought for their parents rights to be granted legal benefits by the federal law. This just shows that they are supportive of their parents right to access benefits given to any married coupleit because these kids recognize that their parents are no different to any otherfrom heterosexual couples. This just proves that we are also capable of

raising children, giving them a good environment, and making them upright citizens of the country. on our own. When I was still a kid, my uncle once told me: Wag kang magiging bakla ha. Sayang yung talino mo. Again, he is just one of the many bigots in our society. Being smart is not mutually exclusive to straight little boys in town. Cant we be called intelligent if were gay? Its utterly unfair. We are not just your parlorista gays. Take a look as well at the other side of the spectrum. We are also part of the labour force. There are gays in the field of engineering, science, education, media, and even in politics. These areas are not mutually exclusive to heterosexuals. We also contribute for the development of society as we fulfil our own roles. But society incessantly downplays our roles. You just dont know that ityour, your boss may beis gay. You are not aware that some of your politicians are gay. We are everywhere. But society doesnt know that these people are gay. They dont get out of the closet because of the environment that awaits them, should they get out. They are afraid to be fired by their bossesof getting fired or not getting elected by the conservative majority just because theyre gay. Even if Im already out, I sympathize with closet gays who cant fully self-actualize. I wish that in the future, we will have gay politicians who will fight for gay rights in the halls of Congress. It might be you or me or some brave homosexual in this room. Who knows? I hope that someday society will correct itself and not us. ABecause after all, nothings really wrong with us., with being gay.
