Dan

Birth Order 5

Meaning of Name Strong’s 1835 Dân, dawn; from 1777; judge; Dan, one of the sons of
Jacob; also the tribe descended from him, and its territory; likewise
a place in Pal. colonized by them:—Dan.

Mother Bilhah (timid)

Birth Genesis 30:1–6: 1 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no
children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, “Give me
children, or else I die.” 2 And Jacob’s anger was kindled against
Rachel: and he said, “Am I in God’s stead, Who hath withheld from
thee the fruit of the womb?” 3 And she said, “Behold my maid
Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may
also have children by her.” 4 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid
to wife: and Jacob went in unto her. 5 And Bilhah conceived, and
bare Jacob a son. 6 And Rachel said, “God hath judged me, and
hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son:” therefore
called she his name Dan.

Hebrew Letter The Hebrew letter associated with the tribe of Dan is He (%) (hay):
(from Paleo It is the English “H.” It signifies a window. Numerically, it is the
Hebrew page on number 5, which is Divine grace, goodness.
the Internet)

Gemstone Sapphire. E. Raymond Capt says this was probably lapis lazuli, a
blue stone (rock) composed of several minerals. Its color is usually
variegated, a blend of primarily of blue, with grey, white, and gold
interspersed. It is softer than many gemstones but its unusual hues
of blue have made it a popular material.

Encampment On the north, between Asher and Naphtali. His standard reflects one
Position (the eagle) of the four faces of the cherubim (see Ezekiel 1:10).

Standard Dan’s primary emblem is the serpent; secondary emblem is the

horse.

Zodiac Sign Scorpio (The Redeemer’s Conflict). The scorpion is seeking to

From E. Raymond Capt’s Missing Links Discovered in the Assyrian Tablets: The first emblem
to which Dan is likened is definitely stated to be a SERPENT. The second is implied, being
mentioned in relationship to the first. It is a HORSE, or a HORSE AND RIDER. Later, in Deut.
33:22, Moses likened Dan to a LION. Evidently, this symbol was never used. The SERPENT,
the official emblem of the tribe of Dan, is not generally found in the national Arms of
Britain or other Celto-Saxon nations. However, it is found in the Arms of many old families:
The Arms of Buxton and Barrow-in-Furness in England, the Crest of Livingston, Earl of
Linithgow, and in those of the Chiefs of the Robertson and Morrison Clans in Scotland. In the
Netherlands, it appears in at least twenty municipal Arms.

Dan’s secondary emblem, a HORSE, usually pictured white, and sometimes with a rider, was
a favorite emblem of the Saxons long before their invasion of Britain. In the Netherlands, a
white HORSE appears on the shield or as a supporter in the Arms of Assendelft,
Hoogkarspel, Westerbork, Zuidlaren, Baarn, Renkim, Workhoven and several others. In
Denmark, a white HORSE appears on the shield in the Royal Arms and in the municipal Arms
of Horsens, Holstebro, Augustenborg, while a red HORSE appears on those of Frederiksborg
Slotssogn.

In England, a white HORSE is the emblem of the County of Kent and it also appears in
emblems of several German and Lithuanian principalities. In Scotland, it is part of the
official emblem of Jedburgh and also appears in the Crests of Cochrane, Earl of Dunonald;
Dunbar of Mochrum; Hepburn, Earl of Rothwell; Trotter of Catchiraw, and as supporters in
the Arms of the Chief of Clan Cumming.

Dan’s Zodiac Sign
Scorpio
Third sign in the first book, The Redeemer.
The scorpion seeking to wound, but itself trodden under foot.

Scorpio
The Redeemer’s Conflict

Hebrew Name

The Hebrew name is Akrab, which is the name of a

scorpion, but also means the conflict, or war. This is
referred to in Psalm 91:13: 13 Thou shalt tread upon
the lion and adder. The young lion and the dragon shalt
thou trample under feet.

David used a word related to Akrab in Psalm 144:1:

Blessed be the LORD my strength, Which teacheth my
hands to war, And my fingers to fight.

The Danites had some association with a place called

Akrabbim: Judges 1:34–36: 34 And the Amorites forced
the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would
not suffer them to come down to the valley: 35 But the
Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house
of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. 36 And the coast of the Amorites was
from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Scorpio—44 Stars
(one of the first magnitude, one of the second magnitude, eleven of the third
magnitude, eight of the fourth magnitude)
á The brightest star, located in the heart. Its Arabic name is Antares, the wounding. Latins
called it Cor Scorpii, because it marks the scorpion’s heart. It shines ominously with a deep
red light.

The sting is called in Hebrew Lesath (Chaldee Lesha), which means the perverse. The stars in
the tail are also known as Leshaa, or Leshat.

5
Place in the Heavenly Story

Scorpio is the third sign in the first book, The Redeemer. The sign depicts a giant scorpion
ready to sting in the heel of a mighty man who is struggling with a serpent but is crushed by
a man, who has his foot placed right on the scorpion’s heart. The scorpion is a deadly
enemy with poison in its sting, and all the names associated with the sign combine to set
forth the malignant enmity which is “set” between the serpent and the woman’s Seed. This
enmity is shown over and over again in scripture. The real wounding of the heel was
received at the Cross.

Christ died and was raised from the dead “to destroy the works of the devil.” To
demonstrate that the conflict only apparently ended in defeat, the first two constellations
in the sign are presented in one picture. The picture is indeed threefold—it includes the
sign itself. If the pictures had been separated, conflict would have been separated from
victory, the deadly wound of the serpent’s head from the temporary wound in the Victor’s
heel. The three pictures that involve the scorpion, serpent, and man present the
triumphant issue of the conflict.

Historically, Scorpio was everywhere an unfortunate, cursed, and warlike sign.

Serpens (the Serpent) and Ophiuchus (the Serpent Holder)

(The struggle with the enemy)

Here Serpens, the serpent, is seen

struggling vainly in the powerful
grasp of the man Ophiuchus. He is at
one and the same moment shown to
be seizing the serpent with his two
hands, and treading on the very heart
of the scorpion, marked by the deep
red star Antares (wounding).

The first constellation in Scorpio

expounds on Libra. In Scorpio we see
merely the effort to wound
Ophiuchus in the heel; but here we
see the effort of the serpent to seize
the Crown, which is situated immediately over the serpent’s head, and to which he is
looking up and reaching forth.

The contest is for dominion. It was the devil who robbed the first man of his crown, but in
vain he struggled to wrest it from the sure possession of the Second Man. Not only does he

6
fail in the attempt, but is himself utterly defeated and trodden under foot.

Serpens and Ophiuchus—134 Stars

(two of the second magnitude, fourteen are of the third magnitude, and thirteen of
the fourth)
á the brightest star in Serpens, located in the neck of the serpent, Hebrew Unuk, encompassing;
Hebrew Alyah, the accursed; Arabic Al Hay, the reptile

â located in the jaw, Arabic Cheleb, or Chelbalrai, the serpent enfolding. The Greek name,
Ophiuchus, is from the Hebrew and Arabic name Afeichus, which means the serpent held.

á the brightest star in Ophiuchus, located in the head, Arabic Ras al Hagus, the head of him who
holds.

Hebrew Triophas, treading under foot

located in the foot of Ophiuchus, Hebrew Saiph, bruised (In 1604 a new star appeared in the
eastern foot of Ophiuchus, but it disappeared again in 1605).

Hebrew Carnebas, the wounding

one knee, with his right heel
lifted up as if it had been
wounded, while his left foot is
set directly over the head of
the great dragon. In his right
hand he wields a great club,
and in his left hand he grasps a triple-headed monster (Cerberus). And he has the skin of a
lion, which he has slain, thrown around him.

hosts which he had against the cities of Israel, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abel-beth-
maachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. 21 And it came to pass, when
Baasha heard thereof, that he left off building of Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah. 22 Then king
Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted: and they took away
the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha had builded; and king Asa
built with them Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah.

II Chronicles 16:4: 4 And Ben-hadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of his

Dan’s Inheritances
Dan’s Inheritance in the Promised Land

Joshua 19:40–48: 40 And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan

and Irshemesh, 42 And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah, 43 And Elon, and Thimnathah,
and Ekron, 44 And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath, 45 And Jehud, and Bene-berak,
and Gath-rimmon, 46 And Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho. 47 And
the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan
went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and
possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their
father. 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their
families, these cities with their villages.

Levite Cities Assigned to Kohathites in the Territory of Dan

Joshua 21:4-5; 20–26: 4 And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the
children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of
Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities. 5
And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim,
and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities. 20 And the
families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath,
even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim. 21 For they gave them
Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and
Gezer with her suburbs, 22 And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs;
four cities. 23 And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her
suburbs, 24 Aijalon with her suburbs, Gath-rimmon with her suburbs; four cities. 25 And out
of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs;
two cities. 26 All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of
Kohath that remained.

Sealing of the End Times

Dan is the only tribe from which 12,000 are not sealed in the end times. The usual reason given is because
Dan was the first tribe to fall into idolatry.

Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: 3 And I have filled him with
the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of
workmanship, 4 To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, 5 And
in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of
workmanship. 6 And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the
tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they
may make all that I have commanded thee; 7 The tabernacle of the congregation, and the
ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the
tabernacle, 8 And the table and his furniture, and the pure candlestick with all his
furniture, and the altar of incense, 9 And the altar of burnt offering with all his furniture,
and the laver and his foot, 10 And the cloths of service, and the holy garments for Aaron
the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest’s office, 11 And the
anointing oil, and sweet incense for the holy place: according to all that I have commanded
thee shall they do.”

Exodus 38:21–24: 21 This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony,
as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites,
by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest. 22 And Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of
Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses. 23 And with him was
Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an
embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen. 24 All the gold that was
occupied for the work in all the work of the holy place, even the gold of the offering, was
twenty and nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the
sanctuary.

Part Danite Blasphemes the Name of the Lord

Leviticus 24:10–23: 10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian,
went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of
Israel strove together in the camp; 11 And the Israelitish woman’s son blasphemed the
name of the LORD , and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother’s name
was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) 12 And they put him in ward,
that the mind of the LORD might be shewed them. 13 And the LORD spake unto Moses,
saying, 14 “Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him
lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. 15 And thou shalt
speak unto the children of Israel, saying, ‘Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin. 16

15
And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD , he shall surely be put to death, and all the
congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land,
when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD , shall be put to death. 17 And he that killeth
any man shall surely be put to death. 18 And he that killeth a beast shall make it good;
beast for beast. 19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall
it be done to him; 20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a
blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. 21 And he that killeth a beast, he shall
restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death. 22 Ye shall have one manner
of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your
God.’” 23 And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that
had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the
LORD commanded Moses.

Ahiezer’s Offering for the Dedicating of the Altar on the Tenth

Day
Numbers 7:1–6; 11; 36–41: 1 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the
tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the
altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them; 2 That the
princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes,
and were over them that were numbered, offered: 3 And they brought their offering before
the LORD , six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for
each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle. 4 And the LORD spake unto
Moses, saying, 5 “Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of
the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his
service.” 6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. 11
And the LORD said unto Moses, “They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for
the dedicating of the altar.” 66 On the tenth day Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, prince of
the children of Dan, offered: 67 His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof
was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of
the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: 68 One
golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense: 69 One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of
the first year, for a burnt offering: 70 One kid of the goats for a sin offering: 71 And for a
sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year:
this was the offering of Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

Moses’ Blessing to Dan

Deuteronomy 33:22: 22 And of Dan he said, “Dan is a lion’s whelp: he shall leap from
Bashan.”

Samson
Judges 13:1–16:31: 1 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD ; and
the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. 2 And there was a
certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife
was barren, and bare not. 3 And the Angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said
unto her, “Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear
a son. 4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat
not any unclean thing: 5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no rasor shall
come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall
begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” 6 Then the woman came and told
her husband, saying, “A Man of God came unto me, and His countenance was like the
countenance of an Angel of God, very terrible: but I asked Him not whence he was, neither
told He me His name: 7 But He said unto me, ‘Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son;
and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be
a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’” 8 Then Manoah intreated the
LORD , and said, “O my LORD , let the Man of God Which thou didst send come again unto us,
and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.” 9 And God hearkened to
the voice of Manoah; and the Angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the
field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 And the woman made haste, and ran,
and shewed her husband, and said unto him, “Behold, the Man hath appeared unto me,
That came unto me the other day.” 11 And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and
came to the man, and said unto him, “Art Thou the Man That spakest unto the woman?”
And He said, “I am.” 12 And Manoah said, “Now let Thy words come to pass. How shall we
order the child, and how shall we do unto him?” 13 And the Angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, “Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. 14 She may not eat of any thing
that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean
thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.” 15 And Manoah said unto the Angel of the
LORD , “I pray Thee, let us detain Thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for Thee.” 16
And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, “Though thou detain Me, I will not eat of thy
bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD .” For Manoah
knew not that he was an Angel of the LORD . 17 And Manoah said unto the Angel of the LORD ,
“What is Thy name, that when Thy sayings come to pass we may do Thee honour?” 18 And
the Angel of the LORD said unto him, “Why askest thou thus after My name, seeing it is
secret?” 19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the
LORD : and the Angel did wondrously; (and Manoah and his wife looked on). 20 For it came
to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the Angel of the
LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on
their faces to the ground. 21 But the Angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and

17
to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an Angel of the LORD . 22 And Manoah said unto
his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God.” 23 But his wife said unto him,
“If the LORD were pleased to kill us, He would not have received a burnt offering and a
meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as
at this time have told us such things as these.” 24 And the woman bare a son, and called
his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. 25 And the Spirit of the
LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol. 1 And
Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the
Philistines. 2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, “I have seen a
woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to
wife.” 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, “Is there never a woman among the
daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines?” And Samson said unto his father, “Get her for me; for she
pleaseth me well.” 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD , that
He sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion
over Israel. 5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and
came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him. 6 And the
Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and
he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done. 7
And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. 8 And after a
time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and,
behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion. 9 And he took
thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave
them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion. 10 So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a
feast; for so used the young men to do. 11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that
they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said unto them, “I will now
put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the
feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments: 13
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of
garments.” And they said unto him, “Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.” 14 And he
said unto them, “Out of the eater came forth meat, And out of the strong came forth
sweetness.” And they could not in three days expound the riddle. 15 And it came to pass on
the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, “Entice thy husband, that he may
declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye
called us to take that we have? is it not so?” 16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and
said, “Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the
children of my people, and hast not told it me.” And he said unto her, “Behold, I have not
told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?” 17 And she wept before him the
seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told
her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down,

18
“What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, “If
ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.” 19 And the Spirit of
the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and
took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And
his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house. 20 But Samson’s wife was given
to his companion, whom he had used as his friend. 1 But it came to pass within a while
after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, “I
will go in to my wife into the chamber.” But her father would not suffer him to go in. 2 And
her father said, “I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to
thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of
her.” 3 And Samson said concerning them, “Now shall I be more blameless than the
Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.” 4 And Samson went and caught three hundred
foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between
two tails. 5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn
of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the
vineyards and olives. 6 Then the Philistines said, “Who hath done this?” And they answered,
“Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his
companion.” And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire. 7 And
Samson said unto them, “Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after
that I will cease.” 8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went
down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam. 9 Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in
Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. 10 And the men of Judah said, “Why are ye come up
against us?” And they answered, “To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath
done to us.” 11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and
said to Samson, “Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that
thou hast done unto us?” And he said unto them, “As they did unto me, so have I done unto
them.” 12 And they said unto him, “We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver
thee into the hand of the Philistines.” And Samson said unto them, “Swear unto me, that ye
will not fall upon me yourselves.” 13 And they spake unto him, saying, “No; but we will
bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee.” And they
bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock. 14 And when he came
unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily
upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire,
and his bands loosed from off his hands. 15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put
forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith. 16 And Samson said, “With
the jawbone of an ass, Heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass Have I slain a thousand
men.” 17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away
the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi. 18 And he was sore athirst,
and called on the LORD , and said, “Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of
thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?” 19
But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and
when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name

19
thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day. 20 And he judged Israel in the days of the
Philistines twenty years. 1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in
unto her. 2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, “Samson is come hither.” And they
compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all
the night, saying, “In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.” 3 And Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two
posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried
them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron. 4 And it came to pass afterward, that
he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 And the lords of the
Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, “Entice him, and see wherein his great
strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver. 6 And
Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and
wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.” 7 And Samson said unto her, “If they
bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as
another man.” 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which
had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 9 Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, “The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson.” And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So
his strength was not known. 10 And Delilah said unto Samson, “Behold, thou hast mocked
me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.” 11
And he said unto her, “If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then
shall I be weak, and be as another man.” 12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound
him therewith, and said unto him, “The Philistines be upon thee, Samson.” And there were
liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread. 13
And Delilah said unto Samson, “Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound.” And he said unto her, “If thou weavest the seven locks
of my head with the web.” 14 And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, “The
Philistines be upon thee, Samson.” And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the
pin of the beam, and with the web. 15 And she said unto him, “How canst thou say, ‘I love
thee,’ when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast
not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.’ 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed
him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; 17 That he
told her all his heart, and said unto her, “There hath not come a rasor upon mine head; for
I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength
will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.” 18 And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the
Philistines, saying, “Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart.” Then the
lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19 And she
made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off
the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
20 And she said, “The Philistines be upon thee, Samson.” And he awoke out of his sleep,

20
and said, “I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself.” And he wist not that
the LORD was departed from him. 21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and
brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the
prison house. 22 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. 23
Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto
Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, “Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy
into our hand.” 24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said,
“Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which
slew many of us.” 25 And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said,
‘Call for Samson, that he may make us sport.’ And they called for Samson out of the prison
house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars. 26 And Samson said
unto the lad that held him by the hand, “Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon
the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.” 27 Now the house was full of men and
women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about
three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. 28 And Samson
called unto the LORD , and said, “O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray Thee, and strengthen
me, I pray Thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for
my two eyes.” 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house
stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with
his left. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And he bowed himself with
all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein.
So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life. 31
Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought
him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his
father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

A Band of 600 Danites in Idolatry

Judges 18:1–31: 1 In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of
the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance
had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel. 2 And the children of Dan sent of their
family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out
the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, “Go, search the land:” who when they
came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there. 3 When they were by
the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in
thither, and said unto him, “Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place?
and what hast thou here?” 4 And he said unto them, “Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me,
and hath hired me, and I am his priest.” 5 And they said unto him, “Ask counsel, we pray
thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.” 6 And
the priest said unto them, “Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.” 7
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how
they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no
magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from

21
the Zidonians, and had no business with any man. 8 And they came unto their brethren to
Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, “What say ye?” 9 And they said,
“Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very
good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land. 10 When ye
go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your
hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.” 11 And there went
from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men
appointed with weapons of war. 12 And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in
Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind
Kirjathjearim. 13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of
Micah. 14 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said
unto their brethren, “Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and
a graven image, and a molten image?” now therefore consider what ye have to do. 15 And
they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto
the house of Micah, and saluted him. 16 And the six hundred men appointed with their
weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate. 17
And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the
graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest
stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with
weapons of war. 18 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the
ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, “What do
ye?” 19 And they said unto him, “Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go
with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the
house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?” 20 And the
priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image,
and went in the midst of the people. 21 So they turned and departed, and put the little
ones and the cattle and the carriage before them. 22 And when they were a good way from
the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered
together, and overtook the children of Dan. 23 And they cried unto the children of Dan.
And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, “What aileth thee, that thou comest with
such a company?” 24 And he said, “Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the
priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me,
‘What aileth thee?’” 25 And the children of Dan said unto him, “Let not thy voice be heard
among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy
household.” 26 And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they
were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house. 27 And they took the
things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a
people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword,
and burnt the city with fire. 28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon,
and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob.
And they built a city, and dwelt therein. 29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after
the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was

22
Laish at the first. 30 And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the
son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh*, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until
the day of the captivity of the land. 31 And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which
he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

*Bullinger says this should be Moses and not Manasseh.

“From Dan to Beersheba”

Judges 20:1: 1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered
together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD
in Mizpeh.

I Samuel 3:20: 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was
established to be a prophet of the LORD .

II Samuel 3:10: 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the
throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.

II Samuel 17:11: 11 Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee,
from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go
to battle in thine own person.

II Samuel 24:2: 2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, “Go
now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the
people, that I may know the number of the people.”

II Samuel 24:15: 15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the
time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy
thousand men.

I Kings 4:25: 25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his
fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon.

I Chronicles 21:1–2: 1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number
Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, “Go, number Israel from
Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.”
II Chronicles 30:4–5: 4 And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation. 5 So they
established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem:
for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.

Jeroboam Puts Golden Calves in Dan and Beth-el
I Kings 12:29–33: 29 And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this
thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 31 And
he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were
not of the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the
fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the
altar. (So did he in Beth-el), sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in
Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 33 So he offered upon the altar
which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month
which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and
he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

Jehu Continues Jeroboam’s Sin

II Kings 10:29: 29 Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to
sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and
that were in Dan.

Hiram King of Tyre Part Danite

II Chronicles 2:11–15: 11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to
Solomon, “Because the LORD hath loved His people, He hath made thee king over them.” 12
Huram said moreover, “Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, That made heaven and earth,
Who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that
might build an house for the LORD , and an house for his kingdom. 13 And now I have sent a
cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father’s, 14 The son of a woman of
the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in
silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in
crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be
put to him, with thy cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father.
15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath
spoken of, let him send unto his servants: 16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much
as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt
carry it up to Jerusalem.” 17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land
of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they
were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred. 18 And he
set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand
to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the
people a work.

Prophecies Mentioning Dan
Jeremiah 4:14–18: 14 “O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest
be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? 15 For a voice declareth from
Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim. 16 Make ye mention to the nations;
behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out
their voice against the cities of Judah. 17 As keepers of a field, are they against her round
about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD . 18 Thy way and thy
doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter,
because it reacheth unto thine heart.”

Jeremiah 8:13–17: 13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD : there shall be no grapes
on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given
them shall pass away from them.’” 14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us
enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us
to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD . 15
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! 16
The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the
neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is
in it; the city, and those that dwell therein. 17 “For, behold, I will send serpents,
cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you,” saith the
LORD .

Ezekiel 27:15–25: 15 The men of Dedan were thy merchants; many isles were the
merchandise of thine hand: they brought thee for a present horns of ivory and ebony. 16
Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they
occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral,
and agate. 17 Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy merchants: they traded in thy
market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. 18 Damascus was thy
merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the
wine of Helbon, and white wool. 19 Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy
fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market. 20 Dedan was thy merchant in
precious clothes for chariots. 21 Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with
thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these were they thy merchants. 22 The merchants
of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all
spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. 23 Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the
merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were thy merchants. 24 These were thy
merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich
apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. 25 The ships of
Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious
in the midst of the seas.

25
Amos 8:11–14: 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in
the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the
LORD : 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they
shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD , and shall not find it. 13 In that day shall
the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst. 14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria,
and say, ‘Thy god, O Dan, liveth;’ and, ‘The manner of Beersheba liveth;’ even they shall
fall, and never rise up again.”

Dan’s Genealogies
Dan Listed as One of Jacob’s Twelve Sons
Genesis 35:22–26: 22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went
and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were

of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali: 26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s
