Our City of Gold is rich with family and community events celebrating life in and about Oroville. The month of September glitters with opportunities that focus on family, community and friends. The second Thursday of each month the Lake Oroville Area Garden Club (LOAGC), a broad based community, 501-C3 organization meet. LOAGC offers social and educational opportunities. It can be counted on to be at almost every community event sharing gardening tips, and providing beautification programs for the community. The meeting for September is Thursday, the 12th at 9:30 a.m. and includes tea, coffee, cake and conversation and an educational program. Meetings are held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 2350 Foothill Blvd, Oroville. For more information, call (530) 589-0346, or visit their internet site. The Birdcage Theatre has been blossoming and growing for thirty years. Sabrina Fair, a romantic comedy by Samuel Taylor, opens Thursday, September 20th and runs through Sunday, the 29th. A free event that everyone loves is the 19th Annual Salmon Festival on Saturday, September 28th. Starting at 9 a.m. the streets of Oroville between Historic Downtown and the Feather River Fish Hatchery burst with fish-flavored activities during the Salmon Festival. On this weekend, Oroville celebrates the thousands of spawning salmon that yearly make their way from the ocean back up the Feather River. Environmental education, music, Salmon tasting, tours of the hatchery and fun for kids and adults alike make up the catch of the day. Part of the Salmon Festival is the Bounty of Butte County, Sunday, September 29th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sank Park, where the Lott Home is located; 1067 Montgomery Street, Oroville. The Bounty features all things Butte County: food, art, agriculture, music, and a gold mine of fun for the whole family. A line up of local and regional bands reflect the diversity of our community and include Feather River Gypsies, Orovilles favorite Bluegrass and a little Latin. Adults, $15 includes eight tastings, Children 7-12, $5 includes three tastings; and Seniors, 65 up, $5 gets three tastings; accompanied by an adult, children 6 and under free. Many seniors who are residents of our local nursing homes such as Olive Ridge, Shadowbrook, and Prestige. Many residents have out lived their family, or have limited or no family living close enough to come and visit them. Too many are alone. How about introducing yourself to one of the care homes activities director and ask, What can I do? The first time you stop and hold a hand of someone bound to a wheelchair and just listen to them talk, you might get a reward you didnt expect. The first one I got was from an elderly lady, who, as I was saying good-bye, looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said, Thank you for holding my hand.
