MAJORITY LEADER STENY H. HOYER

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of Mechanicsville represents Maryland's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties and portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. Now serving as House Majority Leader, Congressman Hoyer is charged with managing the House Floor as well as scheduling legislation to be considered on the Floor. He also plays a key role in helping House Democrats determine their legislative agenda and political strategy, and building support for the Party's positions and delivering the Democratic message both in Washington and nationally. Prior to being elected Majority Leader, Congressman Hoyer served two terms as the Democratic Whip. Congressman Hoyer is now serving in his 14th term in the House of Representatives, and is the longest-serving House Member from Southern Maryland in history, as well as the highestranking Member of Congress in Maryland history. Congressman Hoyer is recognized by Members on both sides of the aisle as an effective leader and committed consensus builder who knows how to get things done. He is widely regarded as a champion for Federal employees and is a well known leader on education issues. As the former Chairman of the Helsinki Commission, he also is a respected voice on human and civil rights. He is perhaps best known for serving as the lead House sponsor of historic Federal election reform (the "Help America Vote Act") and for guiding the landmark Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) to passage.

CONGRESSMAN JOHN HALL

Congressman Hall won a stunning victory in New Yorks 19th District in November 2006. He serves on the House Committees on Transportation and Infrastructure and Veterans Affairs. He received a rare honor for a freshman member of Congress when he was appointed Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs. As Subcommittee Chairman, Congressman Hall will be committed to fully funding veterans healthcare and benefits, clearing up the backlog of more than 400,000 claims, and extending the length of time veterans may claim combat-related injuries. Congressman Hall is also a member of the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, and a member of Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittees on Aviation and on Water Resources and the Environment. In addition to his strong commitment to veterans, Congressman Hall is passionate about protecting the natural resources of the historic Hudson Valley. Speaker Pelosi appointed him to the newly created Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. He is one of only nine Democrats and two freshmen members appointed to serve on this important committee. He advocates a new national energy policy that emphasizes renewable forms of energy. He has called for conversion of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in his district, just 24 miles north of New York City, to a research and development center for safe, renewable forms of energy.
