Assignment 2
Mark: 90

RIICCWD530A- Prepare detailed design of surface drainage

Marks are given for correct answers, correct workings and for clear and professional setting out of assignment questions. So please show all calculations, state and reference your reasoning for answers and choices in answers. Show formulae used and where data for those formulae were derived or obtained from. Include excel and AutoCAD files where used. Ensure these files are print ready and information within the files is fully labelled. Your assignment should consist of a single master file which contains all the assignment questions and the answers. This file should refer to other files submitted as appendixes. For example: Master file is named: Additional files are: John Smith Assignment 1.pdf John Smith assignment 1 appendix 1.xls

Assignment 2 is designed to build on assignment 1. Please do not attempt assignment 2 until you have achieved a pass mark of 60% in assignment 1. In assignment 2 there are more decisions that you need to make, justify and reference. The majority of marks are for correct workings and for clear and professional setting out of assignment questions. So please show all calculations, state and reference your reasoning for answers and choices in answers, and show formulae used and where data for those formulas was derived or obtained from. Take particular care in justifying why you have made your choices of design or calculations. A pass mark of 60% is required for every question in assignment 2 Please do not attempt assignment 3 before you have achieved the required pass.

Section 1
Question 1

[50.0]

Based on a parcel of land in Bathurst, consider the two inlets and two pipes as shown in the figure below. Catchment A has an area of 1.3 ha and is 25% impervious; catchment B has an area of 3.2 ha and is 55% impervious. All impervious areas are directly connected to the stormwater inlets. The design storm has a return period of 20 years. The AR&R recommends the kinematic wave equation be used in urban areas of Bathurst. The following criterion applies to catchment A & B:

Catchment A B

Surface Pervious Impervious Pervious Impervious

C10 0.26 0.9 0.26 0.9

L(m) n* 65 87 155 75 0.12 0.01 0.12 0.01

So 0.02 0.015 0.025 0.015

(a) Calculate the peak flows for catchment A and B. (b) Calculate the size of pipe 1 and 2. (Assume pipe 2 continues the slope from pipe 1)

Question 1

(40 Marks)

Find a suitable size for a concrete pipe culvert to discharge a flow of 2.9 m3/s with a maximum outlet velocity of 2.4 m/s. Given that the length of the culvert is 20 m on an invert slope of 0.36% and the tail water depth is 0.7 m. The inlet type of pipe is groove end with headwater and has the following characteristics: ke = 0.20 and n = 0.012. A maximum pipe size of 825mm is to be used. (a) Tabulate the results for all three pipe sizes on the RTA standard form. (b) Select the most suitable pipe size for the culvert and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your selection. You may consider the methods of culvert operation explained in section 9. Please include the all figures with drawn lines which you used to formulate part 1a.
