Ethernet Cable Instructions: 1. 2. 3. Pull the cable off the reel to the desired length and cut.

Start on one end and strip the cable jacket off using a stripper or scissor. Spread, untwist the pairs, and arrange the wires in the order of the desired cable end. Flatten the end between your thumb and forefinger. Hold the RJ-45 plug with the clip facing down or away from you. Push the wires firmly into the plug. Inspect each wire is flat even at the front of the plug. Check the order of the wires. Check the color orientation, check that the crimped connection is not about to come apart, and check to see if the wires are flat against the front of the plug.

CHARACTERISTICS OF UTP: 1. Low cost 2. Easy to install 3. High speed capacity 4. High attenuation 5. Effective to EMI 6. 100 meter limit

4.

5.

ADVANTAGES OF UTP: 1. Easy installation 2. Capable of high speed for LAN 3. Low cost

DISADVANTAGES OF UTP: 1. Short distance due to attenuation Ethernet Cable Tips: 1. A straight-thru cable has identical ends. 2. A crossover cable has different ends. 3. A straight-thru is used as a patch cord in Ethernet connections. 4. A crossover is used to connect two Ethernet devices without a hub or for connecting two hubs. 5. A crossover has one end with the Orange set of wires switched with the Green set. 6. Odd numbered pins are always striped; even numbered pins are always solid colored. 7. Looking at the RJ-45 with the clip facing away from you, Brown is always on the right, and pin 1 is on the left. 8. No more than 1/2" of the Ethernet cable should be untwisted otherwise it will be susceptible to crosstalk. 9. Do not deform, do not bend, do not stretch, do not staple, do not run parallel with power cables, and do not run Ethernet cables near noise inducing components

CHARACTERISTICS OF STP: 2. Medium cost 3. Easy to install 4. Higher capacity than UTP 5. Higher attenuation, but same as UTP 6. Medium immunity from EMI 7. 100 meter limit

ADVANTAGES OF STP: 1. Shielded 2. Faster than UTP and coaxial

DISADVANTAGES OF STP: 1. More expensive than UTP and coaxial 2. More difficult installation 3. High attenuation rate

Here the most common coaxial standards: 1. 50-Ohm RG-7 or RG-11 : used with thick Ethernet. 2. 50-Ohm RG-58 : used with thin Ethernet 3. 75-Ohm RG-59 : used with cable television 4. 93-Ohm RG-62 : used with ARCNET

CHARACTERISTICS OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE: 1. Expensive 2. Very hard to install 3. Capable of extremely high speed 4. Extremely low attenuation 5. No EMI interference

CHARACTERISTICS OF COAXIAL CABLE: 1. Low cost 2. Easy to install 3. Up to 10Mbps capacity 4. Medium immunity form EMI 5. Medium of attenuation

ADVANTAGES OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE: 1. Fast 2. Low attenuation 3. No EMI interference

ADVANTAGES COAXIAL CABLE 1. Inexpensive 2. Easy to wire 3. Easy to expand 4. Moderate level of EMI immunity

DISADVANTAGES FIBER OPTICS: 1. Very costly 2. Hard to install

DISADVANTAGE COAXIAL CABLE 1. Single cable failure can take down an entire network
