ested in operating Kaslo Municipal Campground for the next YH
years, seasonal operations, effective May 1
st
2014. Contractors
with experience of host duties, maintenance and working with the
public are asked to submit their information and a business plan
that demonstrates positive revenue opportunities for the Village
of Kaslo.
Contractors are asked to submit Expressions of Interest contain-
ing the following:
1. Proponent background information and experience.
2. The benefts to the Village Of Kaslo from selection of your
proposal.
3. A list of relevant, up to date, references.
4. A generalized business plan, including costs, to support your
proposal.

Neville regularly ofers pres-
entations at birding festivals such
as Brant Festival, Wings over the
Rockies, and the Meadowlark
Festival. In addition to articles
published in a number of nature
journals, his recordings have
been used by the Canadian Wild-
life Service for Training DVDs,
CBC Televisions Te Nature of
Tings, and Parks Canada inter-
pretive programs.
Produced by Neville Recording,
CDs of particular interest to this re-
gion include Birds of the Kootenays,
Bird Songs of the Creston Valley, and
Beginners Guide to BC Birdsong,
among many others, but those with
a love of birds and a penchant for
travel will enjoy titles such as Bird
Songs of the Scottish Highlands or
Bird Songs of the Arctic.
Nevilles work is presently ex-
hibited in the new Robert Bateman
Centre in Victoria. He is currently

Calgary where she
met a funny wee

Dick Smith. Te
two were married
and soon there-
afer Dick got the
outlandish idea
to abandon his
steady, stable and
extremely sane job
as Chief Drafs-
man of the Al-
berta Gas Trunk
Line and move his
young family to Kaslo to build charter ships. And in
true Dee-Dee style, his wife replied: Count me in!
It was Dee-Dees unwavering spirit of adventure that saw
the family through the unsteady, unstable and extreme-
ly insane early years of the Kaslo Shipyard Company. It
was her courage and optimism that made her duties as
Secretary-Treasurer duties such as laying keel blocks,
chipping welds, operating the winch and christening
ships seem semi-reasonable, even fun.
It was that willingness to play, to be part of the game
that made her a true people person. It was her genuine
interest in learning what you really think that drew
people to Dee-Dee and lef them feeling somehow en-
hanced.
And it was that buoyant enthusiasm, that bubbly laugh-
ter, that singular Dee-Deeness that made her an in-
stant friend.
Dee-Dee Smith passed away suddenly at home on
Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Please drop by to salute
and to celebrate our Dee-Dee Smith.

Meadow Creek Spawning Channel
Open House
Its time to see red a lot of red on Sunday, September
8, between 10 am and 2 pm, at Meadow Creek Spawning
Channel at the north end of Kootenay Lake. Tat is when
the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP)
together with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natur-
al Resource Operations (FLNRO) are hosting an Open
House at the channel.
Tis Sunday Open House is a free, family event provid-
ing an opportunity for visitors to view the kokanee at (or
near) the peak of their run, and talk to biologists about
channel operations. Bear Smart information will also be
provided, and a limnologist (freshwater specialist) will be
on site to answer questions about the Nutrient Restoration
Program in Kootenay Lake.
Te public are also reminded that the new viewing
hours at Meadow Creek Spawning Channel run from 10
am to 2 pm daily. Te new hours are to reduce the risks of
any human-bear conficts, yet keep the channel open for
public viewing as much as possible. Te gate will be closed
at all other times, and FLNRO may order a temporary
total closure to the public if there are future human-bear
conficts at the channel.
Te kokanee spawning run lasts from late August to ear-
ly October, with the peak time for viewing the kokanee
usually occurring during the frst two weeks of September.
Te FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the Prov-
ince of BC, First Nations and local community groups to
conserve and enhance fsh and wildlife and their supporting
habitats afected by the creation of BC Hydro owned and
operated generation facilities in the Columbia region.
Te spawning channel is located approximately four
kilometres northwest of Meadow Creek of Highway 31.

Michael Guthrie At Te Langham
Michael Guthrie is the real deal, a true songster in the
tradition of Mance Lipscomb or Big Joe Williams. His play-
ing is a treat to hear.
Richard Metzner, host of Make Room for the Blues, KCR,
Nelson BC
Michael Guthrie started the Langham Cultural Society,
in Kaslo, BC in 1974. He and his wife Darelyn owned the
Village Green Caf in Kaslo (now the Landmark Bakery)
from 1973-79 probably the frst cofee house venue in
the West Kootenay region. Imagine that!
Guthrie has performed all over the Pacifc Northwest
Region: Portland Folk Music Society Concert Series, NW
Folklife Festival, Juan De Fuca Festival of the Arts, Winter
Folk Festival (Florence, Oregon) and the Langham Te-
atre, to name a few. He was featured on River City Folk a
nationally syndicated radio show that also aired on XM
Radio. Other radio shows include: KBCS (Bellevue, WA)
Lunch With Folk, KPSU (Portland, OR) Raggle Taggle
Gypsy, KCR Make Room For Te Blues, and KMUN (As-
toria, OR) Troll Radio Revue (a monthly live radio theatre
show).
Michael Guthrie performs at the Langham in Kaslo on
Saturday, September 21 at 7:30 pm. Admission is $10.

Suicide Prevention Day
September 10 is World Suicide Pre-
vention Day. On this day communities
across Canada will come together to
support those bereaved by suicide and
remember the lives of those who have
died by suicide. Tis day also serves as
an opportunity to strengthen the com-
munity ties that contribute to our abil-
ity to care for one another.
Te West Kootenay Suicide Pre-
vention, Intervention and Postven-
tion (PIP) Committee is a group of
local community members and or-
ganizations working towards raising
awareness for suicide prevention and
postvention support. An element of
this work is providing our commun-
ities with the tools they need to thrive
and be safer by strengthening connec-
tions, promoting conversations about
mental wellness, and knowing how we
can help protect and care for each other
during times of crisis. Tis year the PIP
Committee is inviting all people in the
West Kootenay region to come togeth-
er for a barbeque lunch and kite fy-
ing ceremony at the Kinsmen Park in
Castlegar on September 10, at 12 noon.
Te kite is the national symbol for
World Suicide Prevention Day. Te
connection we have through the
string, to the kite in the sky, represents
our connection to the things we strive
to stay connected to hope, commun-
ity, those we have lost, and those who
struggle with thoughts of suicide. Te
event will ofer those in attendance the
option to write a message on a ribbon
as a sign of remembrance for those
lost to suicide or as a sign of support
for those afected by suicide. Tese
ribbons will be tied to the kites and

Tango Workshops
Kootenay Tangueros are in for a treat
when Rainer Schroeder and Alexa
Christ ofer their Argentine tango dance
skills to local folks on September 14 at
the Silverton Memorial Hall. Schroeder
will be familiar to some as he comes
to the area each year with his bicycle
touring business and spends his vaca-
tion time here at the end of his season.
Schroeder studies tango around the
world and earlier in his career danced
professionally with the Koln ballet.
Christ joins him this year for the
frst time as a demo partner and life
partner. An experienced dancer she
is also a professional travel writer.
Te pair have planned two afernoon
workshops as well as an evening
milonga (a place or an event where
tango is danced). Beginning as well
as intermediate level dancers will
fnd the workshops engaging and
useful. Cost is $20 per person per
workshop and includes the evening
milonga. Preregistration is required.
