CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

Dear fellow reader,

We are bursting with pride to be celebrating our sesquicentennial—150 years of publishing

books for young readers—in 2014. It means that HMH (called Hurd & Houghton at the
time) started publishing books for “boys and girls” during the Civil War—an incredibly rare
and enduring legacy. Many of our books have won awards, many have been bestsellers, and,
best of all, many have made a real difference in the lives of children and adults.

It’s exciting to consider that in 2014 we stand on the broad shoulders of colleagues who
came before us, publishing wonderful books such as these since 1864. This catalog contains
our new titles for Spring 2014, joining a long line of terrific books for children of all ages.

Thank you for your support in helping us achieve this historic milestone in our history
together, and, of course, here’s to 150 more glorious years!

Please celebrate with us as we start our sesquicentennial year with the Spring 2014 list.

Kind regards,

Betsy Groban

and catchy refrain that's sure to keep young readers chanting along.

The Loch Mess Monster

Helen Lester, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger
Ever since Angus was a wee baby monster living below the surface of Loch Ness, his
parents tried to teach him to be a proper monster. But as Angus grows bigger, he gets
sloppy. Puggy-nit peanut shells are piling up; his grottie (dirty) laundry is in a heap; tattie
(potato) cans litter the floor. It’s a mountain of a mess! And as Angus’s trash heap
grows, pushing him away from the comforts of home, a surprising Loch Ness sighting of
his own awaits on the surface of the lake . . .
Fans of Hooway for Wodney Wat and Tacky the Penguin will laugh out loud, as the
hilarious team of Lester and Munsinger share a rollicking reminder of the virtues of a
clean room!

by Caitlin O'Connell, with photographs by Caitlin O'Connell and

Do they bully each other? Are they stalked by lions? What happens if they don't get
enough food or water? Are they at risk of extinction?
With irresistible photographs and a text that places the reader in the wonder of the
savannah, this is a book to treasure for all animal lovers.

For twenty years, Caitlin O'Connell has been studying elephants in Etosha National Park in
Namibia. A teacher at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Caitlin is married to

Have You Heard the Nesting Bird?

by Rita Gray, illustrated by Kenard Pak
Woodpecker calls from a tree, "cuk-cuk-cuk." Starling sings, "whistle-ee-wee." But have
you heard the nesting bird?
In this book, we hear all the different bird calls in counterpoint to the pervasive
quiet of a mama bird waiting for her eggs to hatch. Fun and informative back matter
takes the shape of an interview so that readers learn more right from the bird's bill. Ken
Pak's lively illustrations, paired with Rita Gray's words, render a visual and sonorous
picture book to be enjoyed by young naturalists.

Big Bad Bubble

Adam Rubin, illustrated by Daniel Salmieri
An ordinary bubble may seem pretty harmless to you. To the monsters of La La Land,

Wumpus run away and cry. But with encouragement from the narrator and from
readers—“Go on, Wumpus, you can do it. (Tell Wumpus he can do it.)”—the three

The Emperor's New Clothes

Hans Christian Andersen, illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton
Illustrated by the beloved creator of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House,
and Katy and the Big Snow, this is a delightful version of the tale that boys and girls have
loved for centuries. The Emperor himself, his court, and his clothes—or lack of them—
are as outrageous and comical as only the master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen
can make them, and Virginia Lee Burton adds to this tale of fun her own irrepressible
humor in pictures and design.
This lovely new Folk Tale Classics edition celebrates Burton’s lively concoction of
remarkable spirit and beauty.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was a prolific Danish author and poet best known for his
fairy tales. His stories have crossed all limitations of time and space, having been translated into
more than 125 languages, and have become an integral part of children’s literature worldwide.

Virginia Lee Burton (1909–1968) was the talented author and illustrator of some of the most
enduring books ever written for children. The winner of the 1942 Caldecott Medal for The Little
House, Burton was the author of many classic children’s picture books, including Mike Mulligan
and His Steam Shovel and Katy and the Big Snow.

Martha Speaks: Teacher's Pet

Susan Meddaugh
This chapter book based on PBS's popular TV show Martha Speaks features two back-
to-school stories, plus a glossary and activities. In the first story, T. D. adds Martha's
name to the substitute teacher list at Wagstaff Elementary, but not even he expects a
talking dog to actually fill in for Mrs. Clusky. Never one to ignore the call of duty,
Martha takes the class under her wing—er, paw—but Helen's not sure their friendship
can survive Martha's strict teaching style. In the second story, Alice is in agua caliente
when she is assigned an oral report in Spanish class. She can't speak a word. But with
the help of some Mexican alphabet soup made by Tio Jorge, Martha can! Is it cheating if
a Spanish-speaking dog helps you with your homework?

and Mimi are going to have their own table at the craft fair! They are going to make lots
of crafts to sell—and hopefully save up enough money to go to the county fair. There is
one small problem, though— Mimi is a sewing natural, but when it comes to crafting,
Grace doesn't know what to make. Leave it to Grace to come up with a great idea for
the fair that is a big success, and even helps the new crossing guard find a friend.

The Miss Nelson Collection

Harry G. Allard and James Marshall
More than forty years ago Viola Swamp slinked into Room 207 at Horace B. Smedley
School and whipped Miss Nelson's terrible, rude, worst-class-in-the-whole-school
students into shape. In the intervening generations since the publication of Miss Nelson
Is Missing!, millions of children have been fascinated by the legend of Miss Swamp. A
diabolical creation from the minds of Harry G. Allard and James Marshall, Miss Nelson's
alter ego illuminates the folly of misbehavior through amazing feats of disguise. And
she's never been more hilarious than now!
For the first time ever, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, Miss Nelson Is Back, and Miss Nelson Has a
Field Day are available in one volume. This comical, collectable treasury of stories
is a must-have for teachers and their mischievous students everywhere.

Harry G. Allard and James Marshall collaborated on three books about Miss Nelson and her
students, as well as four books about the incompetent and hilarious Stupid family. James Marshall
is also the creator of George and Martha and was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder
medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children in 2007.

Eye to Eye
How Animals See The World
Steve Jenkins
In his latest eye-popping work of picture book nonfiction, the Caldecott Honor–
winning author-illustrator Steve Jenkins explains how for most animals, eyes are the
most important source of information about the world in a biological sense. The
simplest eyes—clusters of light-sensitive cells—appeared more than one billion years
ago, and provided a big survival advantage to the first creatures that had them. Since
then, animals have evolved an amazing variety of eyes, along with often surprising ways
to use them.

Steve Jenkins has written and illustrated nearly twenty picture books for young readers, including
the Caldecott Honor–winning What Do You Do with a Tail Like This?. He lives in Colorado with
his wife and frequent collaborator, Robin Page, and their children. Visit

The Race to Save Africa's Fastest Cat
by Sy Montgomery, photographs by Nic Bishop
Since the year 1900, cheetah footprints quickly dwindled in African dirt as the species
plummeted from more than 100,000 to fewer than 10,000. At the Cheetah
Conservation Fund's (CCF) African headquarters in Namibia, Laurie Marker and her
team save these stunning, swift, and slender creatures from extinction. Since the
organization's start in 1990, they've rescued more than 900 cheetahs, most of whom
have been returned to the wild.
Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop join CCF in studying the cheetah's ecological,
genetic, and behavioral patterns in order to chase down the fastest animal on land and
save the species—before it is too late.

Sniffer Dogs
How Dogs (and Their Noses) Save the World
Nancy Castaldo
Anyone who has ever spent time with a dog knows that dogs love sniffing! They sniff
out hidden food, dirty socks, and the visitor who comes to the door. But some dogs
work with police officers, soldiers, and even scientists to put their "sniffers" to
work. Sniffer dogs make use of the amazing biology behind their noses to protect
people from bombs, catch criminals smuggling drugs, or help researchers locate a hard
to find snail in a forest.
In Sniffer Dogs you will meet many dogs and their handlers and learn all about their
jobs. Some of these dogs are raised from birth to detect blood sugar levels in their
owners. Others are rescued from animal shelters and their boisterous personalities help
make them excellent sniffer dogs. Featuring a balance between science and social
science, Sniffer Dogs will appeal to dog lovers and science lovers alike.

Nancy Castaldo lives in New York state near the Adirondacks (Chatham, New York) and is the
regional advisor for SCBWI-Eastern New York. She is also a photographer. She has a husband,
daughter, and a huge English goldendoodle named Gatsby.

The Crossover
Kwame Alexander
“I love The Crossover. Everyone will.” —Nikki Giovanni

"With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . . The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING.

Stop all that quivering. ’Cuz tonight I’m delivering," raps twelve-year-old Josh Bell. Thanks
to their dad, he and his twin brother, Jordan, are kings on the court. But Josh has more
than basketball in his blood—he's got mad beats, too, which help him find his rhythm
when it’s all on the line.
As their winning season unfolds, things begin to change. When Jordan meets a girl,
the twins’ bond unravels. Josh and Jordan must grow up on and off the court and
realize breaking the rules comes at a terrible price, as their story's heart-stopping
climax proves a game-changer for the entire family. Told in dynamic verse, this fast and
furious middle grade novel bounces with rhythm and bursts with heart.

Kwame Alexander is a poet, children's book author, playwright, producer, public speaker, and
performer. He conducts creative writing workshops in middle and high schools, often reaching
more than five hundred students monthly. He lives with his wife and two daughters in the
Washington, D.C., area. Visit his website at www.kwamealexander.com.

Eddie Red
Marcia Wells, illustrations by Marcos Calo
Not many sixth-graders work undercover for the NYPD, but Edmund Xavier Lonnrot,
code name “Eddie Red,” is not just any sixth-grader. A “near-death ice cream
experience” lands him as a material witness in the police station with his librarian dad,
which is where the NYPD first discovers Edmund’s photographic memory and uncanny
sketch-artist abilities. Things get downright dangerous when Edmund is recruited to
help track down the infamous Picasso Gang that’s casing New York City’s famous
Museum Mile. This fast-paced, character-driven middle grade debut, first of a promised
pair, is as funny as it is suspenseful.

When Marcia Wells discovered the crime writing of Jorge Luis Borges in graduate school, she was
hooked. She is now a middle school teacher and lives with her husband and two young children in
Bristol, Vermont.

Marcos Calo is an illustrator, animator, and comic book aficionado. He lives in A Coruña, Spain.

Game Over, Pete Watson

Joe Schreiber, with illustrations by Andy Rash
Mega-gamer Pete Watson needs just twenty dollars more to buy the all-new Brawl-A-
Thon 3000 XL. So he does something pretty boring: He sells a beat-up CommandRoid
85 arcade game (containing top-secret government intel!), owned by his boring old dad
(super-spy trapped inside the CommandRoid!), to an exterminator (evil mastermind
bent on global destruction!!!). Pete’s gaming skills are put to the test as he fights evil
villains, giant mechanical bugs, and a global cyberattack from within the
CommandRoid. And tries to impress Callie Midwood with his skills, or whatever. A
hilarious, rollicking adventure from the author of Lenny Cyrus, School Virus and Au
Revoir, Crazy European Chick.

Evil Fairies Love Hair

Mary G. Thompson
Ali and her middle school classmates are raising flocks of fairies to make their wishes
come true. But growing a flock is harder than it sounds: the fairies eat only human hair,
and the rules for dealing with them are confusing, misleading, and subject to change. As
Ali and her friends struggle to earn their wishes, mistakes are made, spells go awry, and
soon Ali is up against hundreds of two-inch-tall imps who have very big plans—to
replace all the parents in town!—and the power to carry them out. Comedy and fantasy
intertwine in this lively tale of intrigue, magic, and the power of hair.

Mary G. Thompson is the author of the novels Escape from the Pipe Men! and Wuftoom.
Originally from Cottage Grove and Eugene, Oregon, Mary previously worked as an attorney for
the U.S. Navy for seven years. She holds an MFA in writing for children from the New School and

Screaming at the Ump

Audrey Vernick
Twelve-year-old Casey Snowden knows everything about being an umpire. His dad and
grandfather run a New Jersey umpire school, Behind the Plate, and Casey lives and
breathes baseball. Casey’s dream, however, is to be a reporter—objective, impartial,
and fair, just like an ump. But when he stumbles upon a sensational story involving a
former major league player in exile, he finds that the ethics of publishing it are cloudy at
best. This emotionally charged coming-of-age novel about baseball, divorce, friendship,
love, and compassion challenges its readers to consider all the angles before calling that
strike.

Audrey Vernick is a baseball aficionado and author of the popular picture book Brothers at Bat:
The True Story of an Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team. Her middle grade debut was Water
Balloon. She lives with her family in Ocean, New Jersey. Visit her website at

tough questions about courage, loyalty, duty, and honor.

Barbarian Lord
Matt Smith
“A sword untried is a sword untested,” says one raven to another as they set out to
witness the fate of the finest farm in Garmrland and its owner, Barbarian Lord. When
he is cheated out of his lands and banished, Barbarian Lord begins a quest for allies and
for justice, encountering monsters, ghouls, gods, and mediocre poets along the way.
Combining the rich traditions of the Vikings and Nordic lore with sword-and-
sorcery—and slyly understated humor—this graphic novel introduces an original hero
with classic flair, brought to life in Matt Smith’s beautifully drawn, detailed, and action-
filled black-and-white illustrations.

Matt Smith drew his first Conan the Barbarian adventure when was eight years old. A children’s

Frida & Diego

Art, Love, Life
Catherine Reef
Nontraditional, controversial, rebellious, and politically volatile, the Mexican artists
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are remembered for their provocative paintings as well as
for their deep love for each other. Their marriage was one of the most tumultuous and
infamous in history—filled with passion, pain, betrayal, revolution, and, above all, art
that helped define the twentieth century.
Catherine Reef's inspiring and insightful dual biography features numerous
archival photos and full-color reproductions of both artists' work. Endnotes,
bibliography, timeline.

Catherine Reef is the award-winning author of many nonfiction books for young people,
including the biographies Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, Jane Austen, and most recently, The
Brontë Sisters, which the New York Times described as "beautifully written . . . with rich and
evocative language." She lives in College Park, Maryland.

Ida M. Tarbell
The Woman Who Challenged Big Business--and Won!
Emily Arnold McCully
Born in 1857 and raised in oil country, Ida M. Tarbell was one of the first investigative
journalists and probably the most influential in her time. Her series of articles on the
Standard Oil Trust, a complicated business empire run by John D. Rockefeller, revealed
to readers the underhanded, even illegal practices that had led to Rockefeller's success.
Rejecting the term "muckraker" to describe her profession, she went on to achieve
remarkable prominence for a woman of her generation as a writer and shaper of public
opinion. This biography offers an engrossing portrait of a trailblazer in a man's world
who left her mark on the American consciousness. Notes, bibliography, index.

Emily Arnold McCully is known primarily as an artist. The illustrator of more than forty books
for young readers, she received the Caldecott Medal for Mirette on the High Wire. She is
also passionate about history, particularly on feminist subjects, and makes her YA debut with this
biography. She divides her time between Chatham, New York, and New York City.

Silver People
Voices from the Panama Canal
Margarita Engle
One hundred years ago, the world celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, which
connected the world's two largest oceans and signaled America's emergence as a global
superpower. It was a miracle, this path of water where a mountain had stood—and
creating a miracle is no easy thing. Thousands lost their lives, and those who survived
worked under the harshest conditions for only a few silver coins a day.
From the young "silver people" whose backbreaking labor built the canal, to
the denizens of the endangered rainforest itself, this is the story of one of the largest
and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, as only the Newbery Honor–
winning author Margarita Engle could tell it.

Margarita Engle is a Cuban American poet and novelist whose work has been published in many
countries. Her books include The Surrender Tree, a Newbery Honor book and winner of the Jane
Addams Children's Book Award, the Pura Belpré Award, the Américas Award, and the Claudia
Lewis Poetry Award; The Poet Slave of Cuba, winner of the Pura Belpré Award and the Américas
Award; Tropical Secrets, The Firefly Letters; Hurricane Dancers; The Wild Book; and The Lightning
Dreamer. She lives with her husband in Northern California. Visit her at

A Creature of Moonlight
Rebecca Hahn
Sixteen-year-old Marni lives with her Gramps in a one-room shack, cultivating a
magnificent flower garden that attracts villagers and noblemen alike. Only the invasive
blue dragon flowers in her garden belie Marni’s secret: She is the niece of the king and
the daughter of a dragon. When events force Marni to claim her rightful place as
princess in her uncle’s court, King Roderick eyes the dragon-born girl with suspicion,
blaming her for the enchanted, rapidly encroaching woods that are destroying his
kingdom. Will the king kill Marni, as he did her mother, or will Marni get her revenge
first? A rich, compelling fantasy for the wild at heart.

Rebecca Hahn grew up in Iowa, attended college in Minnesota, and then moved to New York
City where she worked in book publishing and wrote her debut novel A Creature of Moonlight. She
now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with the winter cold, the wide sky, and many whispering
trees.

Dirt Bikes, Drones, and Other Ways to

Fly
Seventeen-year-old Arlo Santiago lives for the “Drone Zone”—that free, joyful, anti-
gravity feeling. He achieves the Zone with risky motorcycle stunts on New Mexico
roads, or while playing his favorite video game, Drone Pilot. His gaming skills are so off-
the-charts, he’s recruited by the U.S. Air Force to remotely operate real-life drones in
Pakistan. How can he refuse the paycheck when his little sister’s health is at stake? This
pull-no-punches novel’s poetic style, focus on friends and family, philosophical life-and-
death musings, and vividly drawn setting of a land “at the intersection of mesa dust and
tractor rust” make it soar.

Conrad Wesselhoeft has worked on the editorial staff of five newspapers and is the author of
another Houghton Mifflin Harcourt title, Adios, Nirvana. He has three children and lives in
Seattle, Washington, with a big grinning poodle named Django.

Never Smile at a Monkey

And 17 Other Important Things to Remember
Steve Jenkins
“Visually stunning.”—School Library Journal, starred review

When it comes to wild animals, everyone knows that there are certain things you just
don’t do. It's clearly a bad idea to tease a tiger, pull a python's tail, or bother a black
widow spider. But do you know how dangerous it can be to pet a platypus, collect a
cone shell, or touch a tang fish? Some creatures have developed unusual ways of
protecting themselves or catching prey, which can make them unexpectedly hazardous
to your health.
In this dynamic and fascinating picture book by Steve Jenkins, you'll find out
what you should never do if you encounter one of these surprisingly dangerous animals.

Steve Jenkins lives with his wife, Robin Page, and their three children in Colorado. He is the
author and illustrator of many books for children.

Jackalope
Susan Stevens Crummel and Janet Stevens
“A roaring good time.”—School Library Journal

You see, the jackalope didn't start out with horns. First he was a plain old hare. You
know, a jackrabbit. The horns came later, along with a corny fairy godrabbit and a
cranky coyote. And the trouble those horns brought—hoooo-wee!
With a gut-busting brew of sassy storytelling and outrageous art, Janet
Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel finally give the jackalope his due. After all, he's
long been part of American legend—isn't it time to tell the real story?

Janet Stevens is the author and illustrator of many popular books for children. Her picture books
have garnered such awards as a Caldecott Honor, a Texas Bluebonnet Award, an ABBY Honor, and
an ALA Notable distinction. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Susan Stevens Crummel has collaborated with Janet Stevens, her sister, on several acclaimed
picture books. A former high school teacher, she now spends her time writing and visiting schools
as a guest author. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Lives of the Writers

Comedies, Tragedies (and What the Neighbors Thought)
Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt
* "There's enough substance here for a quick report or to enliven a longer one. . . . An
irresistible package."—Library Journal, starred review

Shakespeare wrote with a feather quill and ink; Emily Dickinson wrote with a fountain
pen; Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote on a Yiddish typewriter. But what did such writers do
when they weren't writing? What did Jane Austen eat for breakfast? What could make
Mark Twain throw his shirts out the window? Why would Zora Neale Hurston punch a
fellow elevator passenger? Lives of the Writers tells all that and more.

Lives of the Artists

Masterpieces, Messes (and What the Neighbors Thought)
Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt
"Fresh, spirited, and unconventional."—Kirkus Reviews

Most people can name some famous artists and recognize their best-known works. But
what's behind all that painting, drawing, and sculpting? What was Leonardo da Vinci's
snack of choice while he painted Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile? Why did Georgia
O'Keeffe find bones so appealing? Who called Diego Rivera "Frog-Face"? And what is it
about artists that makes both their work and their lives so fascinating—to themselves,
to their curious neighbors, and to all of us? This book presents the humor and the
tragedy in twenty artists' lives as no biography has done before.

Exploring Nature's Mysteries from Perilous Places
Donna M. Jackson
"Kids who need convincing that science isn't all white coats and test tubes will have
their eyes opened here."  —The Bulletin

Wild Horse Scientists

Kay Frydenborg
*"The photography is outstanding, and the images of horses going about their daily
business put them front and center. . . . A worthy complement to most collections."—
School Library Journal, starred review

Wild horses have roamed the shores of Assateague Island for centuries. As their
population increases, however, they risk damaging the delicate area's ecosystem and
being taken off the island. Dr. Ron Keiper and Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick have each made these
wild horses their lives' work.
Descriptive prose, solid science, and never-before-seen images of the
reclusive Assateague herds reveal their fierce and untamed beauty.

Kay Frydenborg fell in love with horses at an early age, and now she often writes about them.
She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and three dogs, and rides her beloved horse, Remy,
almost every day. She is the author of Animal Therapist (Chelsea House, 2006) and They Dreamed
of Horses (Walker & Co., 1994). Wild Horse Scientists is her first book for Houghton Mifflin. Visit
her website at www.kayfrydenborg.com.

The Candy Smash

Jacqueline Davies
“Another rewarding chapter book from the Lemonade War series.”—Booklist

Jessie and Evan Treski have waged a lemonade war, sought justice in a class trial, and
even unmasked a bell thief. Now they are at opposite ends over the right to keep
secrets. Evan believes some things (such as his poetry) are private. Jessie believes
scandal makes good news. When anonymously sent candy hearts appear in Class 4-0,
self-appointed ace reporter Jessie determines to get the scoop on class crushes.

Jacqueline Davies is the talented writer of several novels and picture books, including the

The Lemonade War Spanish edition

Jacqueline Davies, translated by F. Isabel Campoy and Alma Flor Ada
Fourth-grader Evan Treski is people-smart. He is good at talking with people, even
grownups. His younger sister, Jessie, (also in fourth grade), on the other hand, is math-
smart—but not especially good at understanding people. She knows that feelings are
her weakest subject. So when their lemonade war begins, there really is no telling who
will win—and even more important, if their fight will ever end.
Available for the first time in Spanish, by the award-winning translators Alma Flor
Ada and F. Isabel Campoy, here is Jacqueline Davies's clever blend of humor, math fun,
and business smarts. As it captures the one-of-a-kind bond between brother and sister,
this poignant novel subtly explores how arguments can escalate beyond anyone's
intent.

Jacqueline Davies is the talented writer of several novels and picture books. Ms. Davies lives in
Needham, Massachusetts, with her family. Visit her website at www.lemonadewar.com .

Alma Flor Ada, an authority on multicultural and bilingual education, is the author of numerous

Karen Cushman
"Will capture readers' imaginations and hearts." —VOYA

To Blood and Bone Alley, home of leech, barber-surgeon, and apothecary, comes
Matilda, raised by a priest to be pious and learned, and now destined to assist Red Peg

Matilda Bone is a compelling comic novel about a girl who learns to see herself and
others clearly, to laugh, and to live contentedly in this world.

Karen Cushman has had a lifelong interest in history and "wanted to know what ordinary life was
like for ordinary young people in other times." Her research led to the writing of Catherine, Called
Birdy, a Newbery Honor book, and The Midwife's Apprentice, a Newbery Medal winner. She lives

Frogged
Vivian Vande Velde
"Princess-loving girls will be charmed by this story."  —School Library Journal

One should be able to say of a princess "She was as good as she was beautiful,"
according to The Art of Being a Princess, which almost-thirteen-year-old Princess
Imogene is supposed to be reading. Not feeling particularly good, or all that beautiful,
she heads for a nearby pond, where, unfortunately, a talking frog tricks her into kissing
him. No prince appears, as one might expect. Instead, the princess turns into a frog
herself! Thus launches a funny, wonderfully spun fractured fairy tale in which Imogene
wonders if she will be forever frogified.

Vivian Vande Velde has written many highly acclaimed books for teen and middle grade readers,
including Three Good Deeds, Heir Apparent, Deadly Pink, and the Edgar Award–winning Never
Trust a Dead Man. She lives in Rochester, New York. Visit her website at

The Watcher in the Shadows

Chris Moriarty
*“A touch of Chabon, a hiss of steampunk, and a blast of originality.”—Booklist, starred
review

At the turn of the twentieth century, New York’s Bowery District is the scene of a
terrible murder: the Klezmer King has been fried to a crisp by his Electric Tuxedo—on
stage! The Inquisitor’s apprentice, thirteen-year-old Sacha Kessler, tries to help find the
killer, but the closer he gets to solving the crime, the more it sounds as if the creature
that haunted him in his first adventure is back. Worse still, his own Jewish family is in
danger. Sacha has avoided learning magic until now, but as his world falls apart around
him, he changes his mind.

Chris Moriarty is an award-winning science fiction writer who grew up in New York surrounded
by a zany Jewish family much like Sacha’s. Her other books include Spin State and Spin Control,
winner of the 2007 Philip K. Dick Award. She lives in Upstate New York with her husband and two

newly separated, have decided she should spend the summer with her dad, with a job
she didn't ask for and doesn't want. On the upside is a cute boy who loves dogs as
much as Marley does . . . but young love has lots of opportunity for humiliation and
misinterpreted signals. Luckily Marley is a girl who trusts her instincts, making her story
funny, heartfelt, and emotionally true.

They Called Themselves the K.K.K.

The Birth of an American Terrorist Group
Susan Campbell Bartoletti
* "Bartoletti tackles a tough, grim subject with firmness and sensitivity. . . . Exemplary in
scholarship, interpretation, and presentation."  —Horn Book, starred review

Boys, let us get up a club. With those words, six restless young men raided the linens at a
friend's mansion, pulled pillowcases over their heads, hopped on horses, and cavorted
through the streets of Pulaski, Tennessee. The friends named their club the Ku Klux
Klan, and, all too quickly, their club grew into the self-proclaimed Invisible Empire with
secret dens spread across the South. Filled with chilling and vivid personal accounts
unearthed from oral histories, congressional documents, and diaries, this is a book to
read and remember.

Susan Campbell Bartoletti pored over 8,027 pages of congressional testimony, 2,300 slave
narratives, contemporaneous newspapers, and diaries. It is her hope that these stories told will
stand in memorial to the great courage of the Klan victims and of all freed slaves and to the
pivotal role they played in American history. www.scbartoletti.com

Dark Triumph
His Fair Assassins, Book II
Robin LaFevers
*"Sybella's an incredibly strong protagonist with whom readers will identify."—SLJ,
starred review

The convent views Sybella, naturally skilled in the arts of both death and seduction, as
one of their most dangerous weapons. But those assassin's skills are little comfort when
the convent returns her home to the life that nearly drove her mad. And while Sybella is
a weapon of justice wrought by the god of death himself, he must give her a reason to
live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a
daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?

Robin LaFevers was raised on a steady diet of fairy tales, Bulfinch’s Mythology, and nineteenth-
century poetry. It is not surprising that she grew up to be a hopeless romantic. She was lucky
enough to find her one true love, and is living happily ever after with him in the foothills of
Southern California. Visit her website at www.robinlafevers.com.

The Twice Lost

Sarah Porter
"Nail-biting suspense, magically-written characters and plot twists that no one sees
coming . . . you'll devour every minute of it."—Teenreads.com

Mermaids have been sinking ships and drowning humans for centuries, and now the
government wants to exterminate them. Luce, a mermaid with exceptionally
threatening abilities, becomes their number-one target. She takes refuge in San
Francisco, where she finds hundreds of mermaids living in exile under the docks of the
bay. These are the Twice Lost: once-human girls lost first when a trauma turned them
into mermaids, and lost a second time when they broke mermaid law and were rejected
by their tribes. Luce is stunned when they elect her as their leader. But she won't be
their queen. She'll be their general. And they will become the Twice Lost Army—
because this is war.

Under the Light

“Life proves as haunting as death in this well-crafted ghost story.”—Kirkus Reviews

Helen needed a body to be with her beloved. Jenny had to escape from hers before her
spirit was broken. It was wicked, borrowing it, but love drives even the gentlest soul to
desperate acts.
And Helen, who has returned to help Jenny, finds herself trapped, haunting
the girl she wished to save. Jenny and Billy's love story begins out-of-body and
continues into the tumultuous realm of the living, where they are torn apart just as they
begin to remember falling in love.

Laura Whitcomb grew up in Pasadena, California, where she lived in a mildly haunted house
for twelve years. She is the winner of three Kay Snow Writing Awards and currently lives in

The Elementals
Saundra Mitchell
“A sumptuous read, as bittersweet as it is beautiful.”  —Aprilynne Pike, author of Wings

Kate Witherspoon has lived a bohemian life with her artist parents. In 1917, the new art
form of the motion picture is changing entertainment—and Kate is determined to
become a director.
Meanwhile, midwestern farm boy Julian Birch has inherited the wanderlust
that fueled his parents' adventures. A childhood bout with polio has left him crippled,
but he refuses to let his disability define him.
Strangers driven by a shared vision, Kate and Julian set out separately for Los
Angeles. When they finally meet, the teenage runaways realize their true magical legacy:
the ability to triumph over death, over time. But as their parents before them learned,
all magic comes with a price.

Saundra Mitchell is a screenwriter and author. Her novels The Vespertine and The Springsweet
have been praised for their rich historical settings, evocative language, and heart-pounding
romance. Her debut novel, Shadowed Summer, was a 2010 Edgar Award nominee, a Junior

When the Stars Threw Down Their

Spears
The Goblin Wars, Book Three
Kersten Hamilton
“[A] spectacular conclusion .” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Locked doors are opening, and magical creatures are tumbling through portals from
Mag Mell, the world-between-worlds, into the streets of Chicago. Meanwhile, the
romance between seventeen-year-old Teagan, who is part goblin, and the alluring bad
boy Finn Mac Cumhaill is heating up . . . which is awkward, considering he is bound by
a family curse to fight goblins his entire life. Celtic mythology, adventure, and
paranormal romance fuse in the electrifying finale of the critically acclaimed Goblin
Wars trilogy.

Kersten Hamilton has worked as a ranch hand, woodcutter, lumberjack, census taker,
archeological surveyor, and dinosaur hunter. She has written several picture books and many
middle grade novels, but the Goblin Wars books are her first teen novels. She lives in
Albuquerque. Visit her website at www.kerstenhamilton.com.

Betsy Cornwell
“A satisfying mix of folktale, mystery, and family drama.”—The Bulletin of the Center for
Children's Books

When high school senior Noah Gallagher and his adopted teenage sister, Lo, go to live
with their grandmother in her island cottage for the summer, they don't expect much in
the way of adventure. Noah has landed a marine biology internship, and Lo wants to
draw and paint, perhaps even to vanquish her struggles with bulimia. But then things
take a dramatic turn for them both when Noah mistakenly tries to save a mysterious
girl from drowning. This dreamlike, suspenseful story—deftly told from multiple points
of view—dives deeply into selkie folklore while examining the fluid nature of love and
family.

The debut author Betsy Cornwell graduated from Smith College in 2010. She was a columnist
and editor at Teen Ink before receiving an MFA in creative writing at Notre Dame, where she also
taught fiction writing as well as film and television studies. She is currently living in Inis Mór,
Ireland. Visit her website at www.betsycornwell.com.

Catch Rider
Jennifer H. Lyne
“A standout. . . . Everything comes together here—setting, dialogue, horse details and,
most impressively, voice.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Tough-as-nails fourteen-year-old Sid may not have expensive boots like the privileged
teen riders in Virginia, but she knows her way around horses. Working with her
uncle since childhood, she's learned to evaluate horses, break and train them, care for
them . . . and ride like a professional. Amid turmoil at home, she dreams of becoming a
catch rider—a show rider who can ride anything with hooves. In this salty, suspenseful
teen novel, an opportunity to ride a top-notch horse in an equitation show takes the
small-town girl all the way to Madison Square Garden.

Jennifer H. Lyne was raised in Virginia, where she spent a lot of time around horses, and
eventually managed a small barn. She has worked extensively in the film industry as a location
scout and has also written and produced independent movies with her husband. She lives in New
York City. Visit her website at www.jenniferlyne.squarespace.com.

The Wrap-Up List

Steven Arntson
* "Quirky, charming and life-affirming, supernatural style."—Kirkus Reviews, starred
review

In this modern-day suburban town, one percent of all fatalities come about in the most
peculiar way. Deaths—eight-foot-tall, silver-gray creatures—send a letter to whoever is
chosen for a departure, telling them to wrap up their lives and do the things they always
wanted to do before they have to "depart." When sixteen-year-old Gabriela receives the
notice that her days are numbered, she is, of course, devastated. Will she kiss her crush
Sylvester before it's too late? Friendship, first love, and fantasy artfully mesh in this
magically realistic world that ultimately celebrates life.

Steven Arntson is the author of the middle grade novel The Wikkeling. He's a writer and musician
who lives in Seattle, Washington. Visit his website at www.stevenarntson.com.

Cameron and the Girls

Edward Averett
“A well-written, taut, and empathetic novel that provides readers with an unnerving
vicarious experience.”—SLJ

Fourteen-year-old Cameron Galloway of Lexington, Washington, understands that he

has schizophreniform disorder and needs to take pills to quiet the voices in his head.
But he likes the voices, especially the gentle, encouraging voice of The Girl. Conflicted,
he turns to his friend Nina Savage, who is clinically depressed and can relate to his
horror of the numbing effects of medication. They make a pact to ditch the pills. At first
they feel triumphant, but soon Cameron’s untreated mind goes haywire—to disastrous
effect.

Edward Averett—a clinical psychologist and the award-winning author of Homing and The
Rhyming Season—was born in the Pacific Northwest and, except for four years in the wilds of
Spain, has lived in Washington State all his life. Visit his website at www.edwardaverett.com.

77 Things You Absolutely Have to Do

Before You Finish College
Halley Bondy
College is about way more than just frats and finals: It’s also a time when students can
learn new skills, encounter different cultures, test out potential careers, and take a stab
at something new just because it sounds cool. And in order to leave college a better,
smarter, and more interesting person than you were when you started out, all you need
is an open mind, a willing spirit, and (of course) this book! The 77 entries included here
cover everything from negotiating the terms of an apartment rental to attending a
school-sponsored lecture event to hosting a movie marathon – and supplemental
sidebars provide bonus tips for doing everything cheaply and well. (Oh, but remember:
The most important thing to do? Graduate!)

Halley Bondy is a Brooklyn-based writer who has worked as a news reporter for the Newark Star
Ledger, an arts journalist for Back Stage, and as an editor for MTV Iggy. A playwright, comedian,
and the winner of the 2008 Fringe Festival NYC for Outstanding Playwright, she is the author of

Members Only
Secret Societies, Sects, and Cults Exposed!
Julie Tibbott
Clubs aren't just for kids anymore. Since the earliest days of human culture, people
have banded together to pass on traditions, climb up the social ladder, and sometimes
just avoid being excluded themselves. Some of today's groups have been around for
centuries and others have developed in just the past few decades. But members of these
clubs walk, talk, and live all around us; we just don't always know it. Members Only
provides a glimpse into the underground cults people love, fear, and cannot resist.
Delving into different groups like Opus Dei, the Knights Templar, and even the
omnipresent Trekkies, the book uncovers the how, what, when, where, and why of
these mysterious groups. From the infamous Hitler Youth to the more benevolent Elks,
Members Only reveals the shared beliefs and actions of these organizations so that we,
too, can access secret worlds we didn't even know were there.

Julie Tibbott is an editor of teen fiction at a major publishing house. She makes her home on New
York City's Lower East Side, once home to members of many mafia groups, gangs, and
underground anarchists. She's not a member of any secret societies . . . or is she?

Regine's Book
A Teen Girl's Last Words
Regine Stokke
Regine Stokke began to blog about her day-to-day life shortly after she was diagnosed
with an aggressive form of leukemia in 2008. Her stated purpose at the time was to give
people a sense of what it was like to live with such a serious illness, and her blog
became an almost instant classic. She writes openly about the emotional and physical
aspects of her 15-month struggle to survive and explains how her disease impacts her
life. In the course of her illness, Regine participated in photography exhibits, went to
concerts, enjoyed her friends and family, and advocated for registering as a blood and
bone marrow donor. She was a typical teenager with an incredible will to live, and the
lessons that she learned have relevance for us all. Through her eyes, readers will
discover a more vivid world, and a new appreciation for life, art, and the power of the
human spirit.

Regine Stokke was living on the west coast of Norway when she was diagnosed with MDS/AML.
Her blog about living with the illness developed a huge following and eventually became a book.
She died at home on December 3, 2009, with her family and cat by her side.

Henriette Larsen (translator) grew up in Switzerland and the US speaking Norwegian at home. She
has fond memories of beautiful summers (but no winters) in Norway. She earned a Bachelor's
degree in French Literature from Pomona College and completed graduate coursework in French
and Comparative Literature at SFSU. Henriette lives in San Francisco.

Lay It on My Heart
Angela Pneuman
This piercing, sly debut novel tells the story of one unforgettable month in a Kentucky
girl’s thirteenth year. Charmaine Peake’s prophet father has been committed to a
psychiatric institution. Her mother, forced to rent out their house and move them
down to a trailer on the river, won’t stop telling Charmaine things she doesn’t want to
hear—from marital details and middle-aged doubts to uncomfortable preoccupations
with Charmaine’s changing body. A sanctimonious missionary kid has taken over her
real bedroom, where Charmaine discovers his stash of strange and questionable
photos. She is being tested at every turn: Where will her choices take her? And her
faith? She tries to pray ceaselessly as her father taught, but with so much upheaval,
even God seems to have changed.
Like the beloved Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Lay It on My Heart unleashes Southern
humor on the effects of a parent’s mental illness. It brings us into the heart of a family
weathering the toughest patch in their lives. But most of all, it marks out the seemingly
unbearable realities of adolescence and the power that comes from discovering—and
accepting—who you are. A moving, hilarious portrayal of the relationship between
mothers and daughters, this book fulfills Angela Pneuman’s promise as “one of the most
astonishingly talented writers today”(Julie Orringer).

ANGELA PNEUMAN, raised in Kentucky, is a former Stegner Fellow and teaches fiction

writing at Stanford University. Her collection Home Remedies was hailed as “call[ing] to mind
Alice Munro” (San Francisco Chronicle).
