ILS EMPOWER Personality

Learning Objectives
When we really understand each other, we can work together with respect and true co-operation.

What are the 9 TYPES? The 9 Types, or Enneagram is an exceptionally dynamic and easy to use personality system that provides helpful understanding about people, their core motivations and needs. This system has become increasingly popular in the last two decades as a coaching aid to understanding others, for building and understanding teams (business, sports, organisations) and for clear insight into relationships. Its origins are not fully known, though aspects of the system can be traced back to Pythagoras. Here follows a basic introduction to the system.

Have an ? overview of the 9 Types as a tool for understanding people and relationship dynamics in business How to identify ? each type How to ? manage each type How to get the ? most out of each type

9 TYPES Each type can be expressed in a FULL POTENTIAL or MODERATE POTENTIAL or LOWEST POTENTIAL level. By knowing our type, we are able to easily take our type to a FULL POTENTIAL expression. Understanding others types helps us to work better with others, gaining compassion and insight into their personality design. We become better leaders, co-workers and more successful by understanding our own type and others. 3 CENTRES OF PERSONALITY The 9 Types are grouped into 3. Each group has a personality centre. This centre is a dominant orientation for the types in the group. The 3 centres are: gut, heart and head.
? GUT: types 9, 8, 1 ? HEART: types 3, 2, 4 ? HEAD: types 6, 5, 7

We can all access our heart, head and gut, but we tend to have a dominant centre of gravity to our personality design. Based on our centre, we respond to and translate our experiences differently. A gut type will respond based on instinct, a heart type will have emotions drive the action, the mind type will make a decision based on thought. The personality is driven by its centre. It also translates reality based on its centre. Our response to experiences and others sets up the next complex of personality; The 3 Primary Challenge Pearls. Note that this way of explaining the Enneagram is uniquely ILS.

3 CHALLENGE PEARLS OF PERSONALITY In nature, a pearl is grown around a grain of sand. The grain of sand is an irritant. The creature that builds the pearl, builds it to try to get rid of the irritant. In a similar way, each of the 9 types is a design formed around one of 3 basic irritants or challenges. This challenge is an opportunity to create something lasting and valuable.

The 3 Primary Pearl Challenges are: anger, fear and worth.

? ANGER - the challenge to rise above resistance to experience and impact ? FEAR - the challenge to transform fear into courage ? WORTH - the challenge to fully esteem the self

overview of the 3 Challenge Pearls of Personality

There are 3 fundamental personality structures and 2 variations of each, totalling 9 that grow in defence around the 3 challenges. THE ENNEAGRAM The 9 types exist in relation to each other. The Enneagram is the diagram of this dynamic relationship. Like a circuit each flows and is in contact with others. Here is an introduction to the 9 types in their primal groupings. Use this knowledge to develop and grow your own potential, to have respect and understanding for other peoples differences, and to empower others to be all they were born to be!

How to Identify this type

The 9 is a peacemaker. They tend to be relaxed, go with the flow, and get along with most. They enjoy work where there is some routine and where they can just focus and get on with the job.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress a 9 can withdraw and disappear, push anger in, and ignore their own needs, to avoid conflict and being impacted. They can struggle to know what they really want or who they really are. It can be challenging to allow themselves to feel anger and to assert themselves because they want to keep the peace. When stressed they may be slow to make decisions. These are salt of the earth people. If under stress, they can try to keep a false sense of peace by stubbornly avoiding conflict and hiding from life. In extremes this can mean using ways to avoid making an impact or being impacted. Covert anger comes out as slow action, sarcasm, and stubbornness. Low potential 9s struggle to make decisions, sit on mental fences, and they tend to neglect themselves. They like routine. They go with the flow, held back and slow.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

Reliable, hardworking and natural peacemakers. Sensitive and kind to the feelings of others. Can enjoy the simple things in life, doesn't need fancy things. Chilled and amicable. Truly peaceful, content and in the flow of life and work. The more a 9 lives their potential, the more they can assert themselves, be confident and feel fully alive and awake to life. They then can make a positive impact in work and life, by being fully present, bringing wisdom and true peace. Many 9s have jobs that require little stress and repeating tasks. Some 9s (who are expressing more potential) become dynamic and even can become strong leaders. They have wisdom to share.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? What helps the 9 move to health is to get to know themselves ? Give them time where possible to make decisions ? Dont surprise them ? Provide them with space, peace and quiet to work ? Encourage their opinions and input, they tend to have a diplomatic, and

balanced point of view that considers everyone

? Dont rush, take a moment to let them engage ? Show them how to find solutions to conflicts ? Coach them to ACTION and SOLUTION focus ? Help them to see priorities and to tackle priorities first thing every day

How to Identify this type

The 8 is a focused, determined natural manager. They tend to assert power to impact reality through control and enforcing 'my way'.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Moderate 8 Under stress, an 8 can take on a mafia like persona kill or be killed attitude, where war is sport. With strong instinctive likes and dislikes and focus, they can become deadly strategists. 8s are self-driven, projecting a potentially intimidating toughness. They have a very physical presence, with a sometimes sudden harsh voice and steely glare when provoked. Under stress, the single focused pursuit of desires, can go to the point of obsession, with a war-like attitude. All that stand in the way of victory are seen as "enemies". Under stress, they can hold an intolerance for weak people, but also a strong protective instinct towards family, friends or their team. They can have an unforgiving attitude towards being betrayed, never forgetting and happy to inflict revenge.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

Passionate, natural strategists with strong appetites for life and success. The 8 learns that compassion has honour. They develop an understanding of others, realizing that not everyone is like them. Now their natural leadership is combined with caring, they can now lead themselves and others forward. A sword of truth transforms them to samurai with noble hearts. Compassion and strength of character make the full potential 8 an honest noble leader. Not needing to command respect, they earn it with their courageous integrity and presence.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Provide the 8 with their own territory ? Dont sweet talk, or try to manipulate an 8 ? Be honest and direct ? Always back up your opinions with facts ? Get to the point quickly ? Show an 8 respect and they will show you respect ? Dont try to dominate an 8 ? Dont play small with an 8, be equal and honourable ? Dont take their directness personally ? Encourage them to see other points of view and in being more diplomatic ? Provide them with a real challenge

How to Identify this type

The focus of the 1 is to work hard at being good and to maintain high standards in all areas of life, to impact reality by bringing order to chaos imposing the righteous ideal of the 'right way' to live and work.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, a 1s perspective can become rigid in their idea of what is "right and wrong", with no room for middle ground. They can see things as good or bad, without compromise. The 1 can hold very high benchmarks of high standards for themselves and for others. This can lead to a fierce and harsh inner critic with firm rules, pushing themselves and others to stress. Anger can arise at a world that just does not obey the rules - and this can feel like a burden to a stressed 1 who may want to police others into behaving properly. The burden of rigid rules and exhausting standards can be heavy for some 1s. Leading to burnout and trying to carry other peoples responsibilities. The glass is often half empty and others better get into line, or they will hear the complaints and controlled rage until they do.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

This is a person with strong values and principles who also understands that others have different views on reality and learns to honour other perspectives. A full potential 1 learns to lead and so doesn't carry others burdens. They can relax more and have fun without guilt or worry. A full potential 1 has work-life balance. They are able to transform systems and make things work, while remaining more relaxed and open. They challenge their inner critic and become more tolerant of themselves and others mistakes and short comings.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Coach them to find long term solutions to NOT carrying others burdens
? Provide them with structure and clear objectives and expectations ? Be gentle with criticism, they are already fiercely self critical ? Offer suggestions and positive feedback ? Help them to have clear work-life boundaries ? Encourage proper rest and down time in between hard work periods ? Allow them to help streamline systems and improve quality and

standards
? Use bullet points, give clear written instructions and lists ? Be punctual and precise ? Use clear measures and logic to motivate action

How to Identify this type

The 3 is a focused achiever. They tend to be naturally charismatic and know how to get into fast action, find solutions and win.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, a 3 might try anything to avoid failure or embarrassment. Some stressed 3s can even change and distort their nature to appear bigger and better. This would lead to manipulating others in the game and even sometimes bending the rules to win. Natural sales people, the stressed 3 can compromise quality, become overwhelmed with workload and burnout from being driven to achieve. Stress can also cause them to compare themselves to others too much, always looking for ways to get ahead. Neglect for work-life balance can cause long term problems, and cutting corners can lead to more serious problems. The go,go,go attitude can lead to its own stress, and then 3 can hide from problems to try to talk their way out of trouble.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

A full potential 3 is the best of service for integrity and achievement. They stop cutting corners and use their charm and networking skills to win for their team. A desire to want to contribute to the world and be of service bring depth to their natural hard working ethic. Now the entrepreneurial talents are aligned to purpose. The 3 is a natural leader, working for the team to win and not just self. Focused on action and solutions, they move things forward with speed. Success is inevitable after consistent hard work and focused action. They now earn their sought after admiration. Their solution focus means that they get things done. They balance work with play. The full potential 3 builds lasting success and becomes a rainmaker, to the benefit of many.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Encourage purpose and service with winning ? Use their natural action and winning attitude to motivate others ? Provide rewarding targets and goals (they will usually aim higher) ? Acknowledgment and applause goes a long way for 3s ? Do lunch and spend social time with them ? Let them network and connect people ? Encourage honesty and not over-promising ? Manage their being more realistic about time lines and workloads ? Let them inspire teams to win ? Throw a spotlight their way

How to Identify this type

The 2 is kind, supportive, generous to a fault and a considerate team player. They enjoy helping, making a difference and connecting to people.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

A low potential 2 may tend to seek connecting to people to feel good about themselves. Needing to be needed, and helpful to the point of being potentially imposing, the stressed 2 can lose touch with what their own needs and goals are. A stressed 2 gives and gives and gives until they may crack with anger and resentment if they are not fully acknowledged and thanked for their tireless efforts. Under stress the 2 can be overly generous, and burn out from looking after others, instead of maintaining a balance between give and take. When their offered advice or help is rejected, a stressed 2 can feel hurt. Unconsciously the 2 may be helping to be seen as helpful, to be valued and needed by others. Self-neglect at the expense of looking after others takes its toll, and the 2 could realise that they need to learn to look after themselves.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

A genuinely kind, generous person, who makes a valuable contribution to the well being of teams and the welfare of others. A full potential 2 learns to give and receive everything from compliments, to help and gifts. Learning to not need attention and letting people go about their own lives is freeing. Unconditional kindness and support is their greatest gift to others, they use their natural warmth and charm to connect to people. Care and concern for others while not carrying others burdens gives people space to grow. The strong 2 learns to delegate and to say an appropriate no, so as to not encourage dependance in others. They become more self aware, confident and decisive. A full potential 2 owns their own talents and skills and shares these to the benefit of others.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Acknowledge them with sincerity and praise ? Thank them for their extra efforts even if they say they dont want thanks ? Encourage them to receive ? Allow them to excavate their talents and skills ? Coach them to use logic and reasoning to make decisions ? Ask them what they truly want for themselves, not for others ? Provide them with ways to connect to people ? Leverage their natural people skills ? Allow them to care for the groups needs ? Be polite and friendly in written and verbal communication to them

How to Identify this type

The 4 is strongly in touch with their feelings, needs and emotions. They want to be a unique voice for creative individuality, and thrive in jobs that provide attention for their special contributions and innovative ideas.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, a 4 can become melodramatic. Needing sometimes to get attention by being seen as special, different and unique. At its low potential, this can lead to melancholy and focusing on the problem rather than on seeking solutions. A stressed 4 can struggle to be objective, easily slipping into emotional sensitivity and drama. Their natural creativity can become a means to embellish the story of struggle, and sometimes even resulting in them holding onto dysfunction. Stress can lead also to a rebellious defiance, and lack of structure. Envy and entitlement are present in some 4s who might get stuck in the story of the past. They want their story to be special and worthy of attention. They love subtle shades of emotion, intensity and depth.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

The full potential 4 now claims structure and order, to bring their creative, sensitive hearts into true brilliance. Intuitive and attentive listeners, natural coaches, counsellors and trainers, the 4 now moves into sharing their skills and talents with others. The full potential 4 is natural, offering a gentleness to others. They are accepting and easily make others feel at ease. Honest with themselves, they now put their talents to use in the world. Responsibility, hard work and order are now foundations for the 4 to bring their uniqueness to life. Naturally creative they see things in new ways and have a lot to offer. Full potential 4s get organized and create sustainable success.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Listen to their creative ideas ? Encourage them to be structured and ordered, while still fresh and unique ? Benefit from their knack for creating interest and originality ? Coach them to solutions and positive thinking ? Provide them with platforms to connect with and to benefit others ? Leverage their talent for listening and opening others thinking ? Welcome their out the box thinking (even if they cant all be implemented) ? Allow them to express their individuality ? Dont paint them into a grey corner of ordinariness ? Coach them to be organised and objective

How to Identify this type

The 6 response to life is to think and question. They tend to seek security, fairness and transparency. Mostly, they are hardworking and diligent.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, the continually busy mind of the 6 is easily filled with doubt and worry. They can feel unsafe with others and in the world, working hard to create stability and security. If too stressed, a 6 can be mentally exhausted by thinking and looking externally for support. This can mean that sometimes they lose faith in others and look for information to find the truth. Stress can lead them to be unsure of themselves and of authority figures. Their natural logic and discernment can turn into stressful over thinking things, which sometimes leads to procrastination and analysis paralysis. Questioning can become corrosive doubt. *A counter phobic 6 tries hard to not be afraid, and can seem more assertive than most 6 types. Need for trust, faith, support, information and security are all increased under stress.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

Impeccable humility and serves with integrity, grace and care. A full potential 6 has a mind like a crystal chandelier, able to perceive things from many different perspectives and draw out clear thinking and insight. Being more internally referenced, the full potential 6 stops seeking externally for support and finds a great resource of inner strength, true courage and peace from within. They constantly imagine the worst case scenarios, this can be transformed into valuable contingency planning. They stand courageously for what is just and fair. Are loyal and hardworking, with high standards of service. They actively seek feedback to improve. They have a keen mental alertness and are natural problem solvers. When they find faith in themselves, they are peaceful, confident and decisive.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? What helps a 6 is to provide structured information ? Be honest and supportive ? Provide spaces for constructive, balanced feedback ? Show how processes are fair and just ? Provide a sense of purpose and meaning behind actions ? Offer answers to their questions ? Welcome feedback and ideas ? Encourage them to move into action ? Do solid contingency planning to have solutions for what could go wrong ? Offer clear guidance and detail on your expectations

How to Identify this type

The 5 is a mental strategist that tends to live in the sanctuary of intense thinking and trying to understand things thoroughly. They tend to thrive when given an opportunity to deeply understand something on their own.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, the 5 disconnects from the emotional threat of others, retreating into mental and physical solitude, watching from a mental tower rather than engaging fully in life. Analysing and thinking their way around the emotionally murky jungle of life to keep themselves in the emotional safety zone of the mind. Stressed 5 can often be removed from life. The can seem to be aloof and disconnected, living from the mind. This can sometimes develop into a type of 'cold empathy', which means that they can brilliantly understand people but be divorced from feeling. When in this space, they can watch life rather than fully live life. Living in the head, analysing, and disappearing into a fantasy inner world.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

As the full potential of the 5 wakes, the hermit 5 starts to surface and engages in life and relationships. Despite a fear of being overwhelmed by the emotional stickiness of the world, the full potential 5 courageously stands for a vision that becomes important to them. They bring their brilliant minds to the world. Leadership qualities grow and they step to the plate to be fully in the world. Here the 5 can easily become an expert and bring their expertise to others. A penetrating mind for true understanding, and laser focus, means that their knowledge base becomes a rich contribution to the world.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Provide them with a topic or focus to become experts in
? Supply information and study material for them to immerse themselves in ? Dont push them to be social unless they want to ? Have stimulating debates and discussions ? Realise that they dont really do chit chat ? Ask for their expert opinion ? Leverage on the strength of their logic, reasoning and mental focus ? Guide them with measures for priorities and action plans ? Encourage their leadership skills ? Welcome their participation

How to Identify this type

The 7 is energetic, vibrant, youthful and adventurous. They tend to be social, busy and positive. They enjoy variety, freedom, independence and fun.

UNDER STRESS expressing LOW POTENTIAL ~

Under stress, the mental strategy of the 7 is to run from pain and avoid any position of feeling trapped. A 7 can be a glutton for the next high, chasing adventure, change and excitement. When expressing low potential, 7 can be chasing happiness but not being fully being present to be there for the moment. The mind like a magpie chases the next shiny object, hungry for happiness, running from sadness and pain. At worst this leads to unfinished business and burnout. Sometimes a lack of consistent focus and commitment which can bring disappointment when dreams require more consistency to be realised. They can tend to live in positive dreams of tomorrow. Sometimes a sudden harsh self-critic can arise when reality is too real.

STRONG FULL expressing POTENTIAL ~

The full potential 7 brings their fresh aliveness to whatever they do, but remains fully present and focused until the task is done. They find adventure in simply being alive and not in constantly chasing new experiences. They sustain focus and so see dreams to completion, and honour responsibilities and commitments. A humanitarian impulse wakes inside them and they now have the focus to actualize a real contribution to the world. They realise that the chase for happiness and excitement is its own trap. Like a breath of fresh air, 7 is eternally young, vibrant and energetic. Full of life, bringing the spirit of inventiveness, enjoyment and spontaneity wherever they go.

How to manage and get the most out of this type

? Coach them rather than telling them directly what to do
? Invite their thoughts and ideas to make tasks more enjoyable ? Let them spark others into action ? Provide one task at a time, with positive rewards for completion ? Coach them to find their own best solutions and reasons for action ? Time management is best done in short bursts rather than marathons ? Add variety and challenge to tasks ? Wake their playful competitive nature ? Dont put them in a small room with no space to breathe ? Keep them from distractions
