Under-Slang Gantry
Route 3 Country Park
Introduction The segmental bridges are all to be constructed span by span. A specially designed under-slang gantry is to be used to erect the segmental deck to its final position and then move itself to the next span. The gantry is to be designed to carry all the segments of a complete span prior to their permanent prestress and the completed deck being transferred to its support bearings. Information on Under-Slang Gantry Under-slang gantry is a well known method for bridge erection. Components of a Under-Slang Gantry The main components of the Under-Slang Gantry are: 1. The main Girders, plate girders or trusses 2. Transverse Beam, to link the main girders 3. Supporting brackets for the main girder attached to the piers 4. Launching wagon 5. Front or Rear Noses, to connect to the next pier for moving the gantry on the next span

This technique is ideal for span to span construction espetially for simply supported spans, so the final prestress can be given and the completed deck can be used for transporting the segmental units for the next span. Under-slang gantry can also accommodate slight curves without the need of any special design, but when the angle of rotation is large enaught so that the girders will deviate from the piers by more than a couple of meters then rotating equipment and temporary supporting structures will be needed to accommodate Page 2

Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages 1. Ideal for areas where there is limited height constrains

Under-Slang Gantry 2. Can get and transfer the segmental units from the completed span to the required spot without warring about the entrance area i.e(Overhead gantry is limited by the supporting column space) Disadvantages 1. Is restrained by the height of the pier from the ground 2. Does not accommodate high curvatures (compared to overhead gantry) for curved bridges Erection stages The erection method can be spited on to 3 main stages: 1. Adding and supporting the segments by the Gantry, on their final position The segments are brought on place sequentially by vehicles form the completed side of the bridge, than the unit is placed on the gantry sliding hoist and then placed next to the presiding one to be glued and ready for post-tensioning 3. Launching the gantry to the next span Once the span is placed on its final position the gantry will move slightly down by its supporting brackets, and will launch the front nose to get supported by the next pier (or supporting structure in case of a large curvature). Afterwards the main girders will start to slide through the launching wagon until spanning completely to the next bridge span and then repeating the procedure. Design consideration Consideration to be taken in account when designing the gantry Cost consideration Brief description about the cost where the maximum of the cost will go etc. Meeting constrains

2. Prestressing the full span and transferring it to the supporting bearings Once all the units are on place than the span will be prestressed so than it can support itself, and transferred to the supporting bearings Page 3
