CURTIN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Process Plant Engineering 322/518 Assignment 1 - P&ID and Process Evaluation Coal

is the primary fuel for electrical power generation across the globe. In a conventional power plant, steam is generated by heat exchange of boiler feed water with the flue gas from a coal combustor. This steam then drives a steam turbine to generate electricity. A new development in power generation is the integrated coal gasification combined cycle system, which primarily utilizes a coal gasifier and a combination of a gas turbine and a steam turbine for power generation. Prepare different block diagram to P&IDs to accommodate these two processes. Make a brief point-form ANALYSIS of the main features of the process/plant for electric power generation. Do this as if you were evaluating preliminary information with a view to performing a detailed technical and economic feasibility study power generation. Briefly mention the advantages and disadvantages of both processes for evaluation purposes. Marks are not awarded for detailed descriptive work, which can be found readily from available literature sources (a maximum half-side of A4 on process summary). Analysis/evaluation constitutes the work of the engineer; concentrate your attention on this aspect. This would be a preliminary investigation to assess the advantages and the problems associated with both these technologies.

Report Format A4 paper, typed (1.5 or double spaced, not single-spaced) on one side only. Margins: 2cm minimum, and appropriate font size, e.g. size 12 in Times-Roman. *P&ID must use standard/recognized drawing symbols (use of Microsoft Visio is strongly recommended). Copied/extracted figures from literature are strictly not permitted. Report size Maximum 12 pages excluding title and contents page (P&IDs also on A4 sheets). Due 10 am, Wednesday, 11th September, 2013 (on level 2 in Assignments Office, Engineering Building 204). Any assignment submitted after this deadline will only be marked if accompanied by appropriate certificate of explanation. Assessment: 7.5%
