Dear Friends,

An old year just pasta New Year ahead.

The last few months of the year were

hectic but full of blessing. In October over 80 students attended our dorm retreat at Wang Pa. They were about equally divided between Yao and Mong with a few lowland Thai. They had a good time and 15 made professions of faith in Christ.
The next big event was the marriage of Nai Awn, son of the dorm house parents, and Nuey Seng, a Bible college graduate who has been assisting Ann Burgess of the OMF, typing the new Bible translation in Yao. They were married December 7th. Since it was the first Christian Yao wedding in Chiengkam, there were many decisions that had to be made as to what Yao customs should be kept and what ones were incompatible with

Christianity.

The fact that the girl's father was not a Christian added to the problems.

The parents of the groom met several times with the parents of the

served at the feast.

After it was all over, one of the leading non-Christian Yao men

said, "A Christian wedding Is good even though there is no liquor served." The young couple plan to move to a Yao village where there arel-2 Christian families and teach literacy and help build a group of believers. Pray for them.
Everyone had recovered from the extra work of the wedding and we were making plans for the area churches' Christmas meeting to be held at the clinic Saturday, December 21 when Yao Awn(dorm house father) stopped by clinic at 8 a.m. to say that his mother had died that morning. Shehad been very 111 6 weeks before and relatives from long

distances away came to see her. She witnessed to them about the Lord and urged them to become Christians. But the Lord gave her time to live until after her grandson married. She was able to attend church four days before her death and I visited with her. She was 78 years old. Through faith in Christ she had broken with opium though the doctors had told her she would die if she did. She didn't tell her family until after the Lord had delivered her. The day before she died, she had severe diarrhea but improved by evening. When her granddaughter, Ying,(manager of the embroidery project and Bible college intern) visited her early the next morning she told her that she was "going up." Ying thought she wanted to get up from the mat on the floor onto the bed and offered to help her, but she said, "No, I'm going up to heaven." Ying didn't think much about it and went to fix breakfast. When she brought the food to her grandmother, she found that she had already gone to be with the Lord.
Yao Awn and his wife had been concerned about his mother and he went to the village early but arrived after her home-going. Everyone commented on how peaceful she looked. That night I spoke at the service held at the home. Quite a few Christians attended. The next day a Thai Christian spoke In the afternoon and evening, and some of the Yao also spoke and witnessed to the many non-Christians who attended. The Chinese pastor spoke at the funeral service on Saturday and it was interpreted into Thai. Many nonChristians attended as they wanted to see what Christians did at a funeral. They were impressed that there was no liquor served and no gamblingl The night after the funeral some of the Christians came for a meeting and three demon priests also came. They asked many questions and seemed very interested. Also Ying's father, who is not a Christian seemed very touched by his mother's death and her peaceful countenance. A strong opponent of the gospel, Fu Wa, seems to have been touched by the Christian wedding and funeral and for the first time his heart seems to be opening to the gospel. Pray for

him, for the demon priests and for Ying's father.

The morning of the funeral was the area Christian meeting. Two small bus loads

of Mong cam and joined with the Thai Christians. There were Nine churches represented. Everyone joined together for the singing and special numbers and then we sent the chil dren to Callaways' house to watch Noah on video; the Mong went to the boy's dorm where Don Ruleson taught them in their own language. The Thai also had a special speaker and then everyone joined together for a potluck dinner. Each church brought a big kettle
of food and rice and we shared together. When the meal was over, some of us took off

for granny's funeral and others stayed and played games or visited. By the time I got home everyone had gone so I pitched in and. helped the kids clean up and finish putting
things away. It was a day of blessing.

"The future is as bright as the promises of God." So we look forward to God's blessing as we continue to preach the gosp'el and help those that the Lord brings here. Chao, Dang, Bla and Tao are growing and developing according to their interestsChao,

17 loves to play the guitar; Dang, 12, is fascinated by electricity and making things; Bla, 8, is learning to crochet; and Tao, 5, loves to play. Praise the Lord they are in good health and off T.B. medicine. The two younger children still aren't registered, so continue to pray that this will be finished soon. Thank you for your cards, gifts and prayers. May the Lord richly bless you all.

Yours in His service,

Dorothy Uhlig

Report from Thailand

Dear Friends,

Junior and senior high school students are busily preparing for their first semes

ter's final exams which are the last week of September. Those of us working with the dorm students are busily preparing for the annual dorm retreat to be held during the
semester holidays. As usual, the schools at Pua and Wang Pa have different holiday times from other schools throughout the country, so the only time we can have the retreat is 11-14 of October. We will meet at the Bible school campus at Phayao, and two of their teachers will be our speakers along with Prasah, our Yao evangelist. He

is taking advanced schooling in Bangkok but has his vacation at this time. His wife, Muey, will also assist at the retreat. Students have to be 13 years old to attend. Some tribal children get a late start in school and are still in gradeschool when they
are 13, PJ^^y for this retreat that many of the students will come to know Christ*
Evangelism among the Mong continues to go forward as the Christians share with

others. Two women whose husbands were already Christians were baptized last March, In April two families destroyed their demon things and professed faith in Christ, Also,
a teenage girl. Lee, believed. (Her parents gave permission but after 2 months made

her return her Bible and refused to let her attend services,)

and pick up Yao in 2 or 3 villages along the way and take them on to Pepper village. Some days the bus is very full with people sitting on top the bus and hanging on the back. Other times villagers are staying at their fields for several days or weeks and

attend services on Sunday at Pepper Village (Yao) and Pangka (Mong), We hire a little bus each Sunday to pick up people in the lower Mong village and take them to Pangka

then attendance is smaller, Chao volunteered to teach a children's class for the Mong

and is now also sharing with the young people afterwards.

Chao and his younger brothers. Dang and Tao, and sister, Bla, have been doing well in school. Dang surprised us all with his improved grades. The teacher says he is
a good helper and likes to be a leader, Kwan, the Thai boy living with them, has fallen

in love with junior high school.
