President Campero to speak at Press Conference against House Bill 253 Monday
Fellow Roos, It has been an exciting week, I had the opportunity to go to Jefferson City on Wednesday and talk to the Coordinating Board for Higher Education, the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Representative Mike Thomson. I had a conversation with them about the main issues going on at a State Level and on what they can do to support the public education of our state and better serve the students of UMKC. On Thursday, I met with other SGA Presidents, Student Curators and Regents from other public universities we talked about how we can make each of our own universities even better for the students that attend them and on how could we establish more collaborations and unity across the state. You may recall my statement against House Bill 253 that came out two weeks ago, on Thursday, I was able to stand next to Missouri Student Association (MUs SGA) President Nick Droege against this bill at a Kill the Bill rally held in Columbia. If you missed my last Press Release: House Bill 253 (HB253) passed the Missouri Legislature last session and was sent to Governor Jay Nixons desk for approval. Governor Nixon vetoed the bill and it has been sent back to the legislature. HB253 seeks to cut taxes for the wealthiest of Missourians Tax Payers, and slashes more than $800 million from revenue. Higher Education is unprotected by law and one of the most vulnerable places to lose if the HB 253 Veto is overridden. If the Veto is overridden, the University has ONE option: to raise tuition for all four University of Missouri campuses. UM System President Tim Wolfe has announced that passage of this bill will necessitate anywhere from 8 to 16 percent hike in tuition for students. I will be speaking at a Press Conference on Monday put on by the Coalition for Missouris Future with Chancellor Morton and two other community leaders. If you would like more information about this press conference please contact my office. This past week has reminded me once again why I ran to be your President. Thanks for electing me and allowing me to represent you across this great state. If you have any questions, call me at 816.235.1426 or email me at umkcsga@umkc.edu

Your President, Benjamin Campero
