Electrical systems and their protections

Foreword The increasing complexity of power systems requires the use of new digital high reliability powerful protection, monitoring and control equipment provided by self-checking features today available on the market. The progress in the field of digital relays technology and their increasing integration does not exclude the necessity to give to all network planners and operators sufficient theoretical basis in order to understand and therefore be able to solve operating problems involving one specific network component. This training course after a preliminary part dealing with typical network diagrams and basic theory concerning faults calculation is mainly oriented to give to all participants a complete application overview related to protective relays of main power system components: generators, power transformers, HV and MV bus-bars and lines, industrial plants and motors. One specific part is dedicated to the description of relays standards and related application and to protection communication interfacing, considering the present technology orientation to progressive Substation protection and control system integration. Finally, taking advantage of the laboratory facilities available at CESI, demonstrations of actual testing activities will be given at the end of the course. Intended audience Junior and senior staff of generating, transmission and distribution electric Companies and of large industrial plants Junior and senior staff of Isolated System Operators (ISOs), etc. Researchers and Electrical Engineering designers Expected benefits Develop a thorough understanding of main phenomena affecting the electric power systems Improve the knowledge of protection systems (relays + CTs and VTs) application philosophy related to main power system components Acquire a good updated knowledge on relays and protection communication interfacing standards. Dates November 8 17, 2005 Starts Tuesday at Ends Thursday at 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
