WESTWORD
The official newsletter for District 33 Toastmasters
Kathy Choate, DTM District 33 Governor 2013 2014 Dear District 33,
Toastmasters International, Where Leaders Are Made! I hope you feel a sense of pride as I do knowing that we have the vehicle which empowers individuals to become better communicators and leaders. In our club workshops, club members participate in a self-paced program where they develop their own communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. District 33 is one of 88 districts throughout the world. Toastmasters International is in 122 countries, boasts a membership of 292,000 in 14,350 clubs. We envision to be the first-choice provider of dynamic, high-value, experiential communication and leadership skills development. Our District Mission is to build new clubs and support all clubs in achieving excellence. When we do this, we will touch more lives by giving the gift of Toastmasters and help each club member become a more effective communicator and leader. Historically, from 1976-1992, our district had a 16 year run in a row of being distinguished, something very rarely achieved by any district, anytime. For the last 10 years, we have been distinguished only three times. This past year, District 33 finished number 58 of 88 districts. During the Hall of Fame proceedings at the Toastmasters International Annual Convention last month, I felt so disappointed that, despite our hard work and efforts last year, District 33 was not recognized as a successful district. Katy, Lorrie and I watched our neighbor districts 4 and 52 receive their awards. We are determined that our district will be among those recognized next year.

In addition, at our recent District Executive Council meeting, your district leaders decided its time we put our district back on top where it belongs. At this meeting, the leaders agreed collectively, and I might add with great enthusiasm, to gain recognition in the Distinguished District Program. Together, we look forward to again becoming one of the leading districts in the world and to get back to where we rightly belong! Why should we care about this? We dont need to do it because we are not in competition with any district. We compete only with ourselves. Do we want to be recognized among our peers? Yes, I believe we want to take pride in our district and be proud of our accomplishment. But, most importantly, Toastmasters membership gives all of us an opportunity to serve our fellow man. By achieving this exceptional goal, we KNOW we have made a difference in many peoples lives, and changed them for the better in magical ways. This year our district is celebrating its 40th anniversary year. Join me by Embracing Excellence and by working together with integrity, we can make this a year to remember!

District 33 is Embracing Excellence and meeting our District Mission to build new clubs and assist all clubs in achieving excellence. Our first new club of the year, Linguistic Lynx #2100704 chartered on July 16 in Division F, Area F1. Congratulations to the Division F team including Janet Riley, immediate past Division F Governor, and the sponsors and mentors for the new club, Maria Azevedo, Carole Richard, and Garland Barnes.

We have had kick-off meetings in Division B at Vanguard and Ventura County Coastal Association of Realtors. Kick-off meetings are scheduled in Division C at Carrington College on September 28 and in Division F at Winton Ireland Insurance on October 8. We look forward to welcoming these new clubs into District 33! Our goal is to charter 5 clubs per quarter this year to help others achieve success through the Toastmasters educational program. Most of our club leads come from you our awesome District 33 members! If you have an idea for a new club, please contact your Area Governor, Division Governor or me. We also need dedicated members to be sponsors and mentors for these new clubs, to guide them in planning quality meetings, encourage them, build strong club foundations and teach them the steps to become successful and distinguished clubs. Currently, we are in the middle of the Smedley Award membership contest from Toastmasters International. Any club who adds five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30 will receive a Smedley Award ribbon from Toastmasters International, recognition on the Toastmaster International and District 33 websites and 10% off the clubs next order from the TI store. What a great time to plan a pumped up open house! Advertise in the local newspaper, community calendar, Facebook, invite people from area businesses, post flyers at libraries, community centers, grocery stores. Ask for RSVPs so you have plenty of guest packets and food available. More tips are available on the District 33 website http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org/ . Clubs throughout District 33 are starting and customizing websites and assistance is available from our District 33 Club Website Consultant, Gene Dunford. In todays technological world, a Toastmasters club without a club website is like a business in the 1970s without a phone. Gene completed a high performance leadership project last year by helping 27 clubs in Divisions C, D and H start FreeToastHost2.0 websites. Gene is taking calls and emails from members across the district to help them with their club websites and links to ensure clubs have this valuable marketing tool. Through the website, a club can speak directly to the prospective member telling them what makes your club unique and how to find your meeting. Contact Gene at genedtm@hotmail.com for more information on starting or improving your club website. Four new club coaches have been appointed so far and Maria Azevedo, the District 33 Club Coach Coordinator is
updating the training materials. A schedule for upcoming club coach training will be available soon on the districts

Setting Realistic Goals

Things Are Buzzin In B! Our re-formed Division B is off to a good start. Were finalizing Officer Training, and weve emphasized another focus this year. What you ask? Its an emphasis on new Officers being trained on the insand-outs of individual Club practices by their predecessors. I know, I know this has always been an integral part of training but in recent years we feel it has slipped just a bit. Also training-related, we have taken steps to re-focus members on the many resources of the Club Leadership Handbook and the back pages of the Competent Communicator Manual. Theres a lot of helpful stuff there. Weve also endeavored our to make Side Order a Cookbook compilation meant to of 23 documents supplant the Handbook available.
Short Takes: We also have two new Clubs being launched, with a third due to commence in January. Its keeping a lot of folks busy . . . The

With respect to goals, should our extend beyond our grasp? reach We would all agree that it good to set high goals except when such goals become unrealistic. Each member that welcomes the opportunity to join a Toastmasters club comes with a grasp of certain attributes. Building upon existing attributes while providing for a learning experience for each member to achieve his or personal goals as well as those of the Club should be an objective of every Club. However when the personal goals of the members are not aligned in the same direction as those of the Club, distorted or unrealistic goals may result. In even conflict extreme situations, may come to may ensue. Members perceive pressure from Club to achieve leaders goals outside of their reach. On the other hand, the it members Club may perceive in enthusiasm. lacking points to take away The important are basically these. For Club goals to be realistic, first the goals of the members must be aligned with those of the Club. Secondly, club leaders must receive the buy-in or commitment of the members. Finally, since goals are dynamic, there is the requirement for periodic review by both club leaders and members.

Courageous Communicators of Division C! Champions of Truth, Education, and FUN!!

Our Division C team has been hard at work! We are 100% Officer Trained and my Governors are working on getting their first Area Governor visits done. The Area Governors are also hard at work putting their contests together. Our contest season is upon us and Division Cs kickoff for our Area Contests begins on Sept. 7. All Contest information can be found on our District 33 Toastmasters website (http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org). Please go out and support your favorite speaker or all the speakers. Attending an Area, Division, or District contest helps you make many more connections than you would in your own club, and it also the chance grow when allows you to participating in such events whether are a speaker or just helping out you a role for the contest. with I highly it!! I remember encourage stepping my club was a little scary, outside of but hey I have been in Leadership now for 3 years and I STILL LOVE IT!! If I had never taken that first step I might not have realized how much more Toastmasters has to offer!! Education is key! Our Division C team is dedicated to Truth, Education and FUN!!

Division B Fall Contest is set for October 26 at Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Will be good fun . . . Longtime Ojai Toastmaster Jon Dieges WON the Senior Golf Tourney at Soule Park in Ojai. He had to deal with accusations of being a sandbagger. . ..

Goal is to Empower Thru Education

embark upon the journey of As we another Toastmaster year I am thrilled and grateful to be of service Division D Governor. The as the divisions theme is a call for our members to become the embodiment of Toastmasters Internationals outstanding educational system. Educating ourselves and others on the value of developing better communication and leadership skills is the basis of the collective empowerment of our organization. The phrase Knowledge is Power is amazingly accurate.

Engaging Excellence
In Division E, we are building on Districts motto of Embracing Excellence by integrating it with our own motto: Engaging Excellence. Our Area Governors are exceptional leaders who work cooperatively as a team to achieve our goals. We are on track and aiming to achieve Presidents Distinguished Areas and Division at this point, to support the District 33 goal of Presidents Distinguished District. Three new clubs are in the works: one (Carpinteria) is close to chartering, needing a few more members; a second, connected with Vandenberg AFB, is in the beginning stages of planning; and a third (an LGBT club) is a bit further along than being just a twinkle, as Katy Porter puts it. We will work as closely as possible to regenerate 5 clubs (5% of our club base) which presently have 12 or fewer members. Club Coaches and Mentors are being suggested as ways of strengthening these clubs. Area Governors may also present Moments of Truth to motivate club officers and members to do all they can to bolster their rosters. Our goal is to bring membership in these clubs up to 20 by June 31st, 2014.

We is Key!
We is key in Division F! What does that mean? It means that together (division officers, club officers, and club members) we have what it takes to continue success in Division F. This year, we will be focusing on a four-fold vision: (1) Improved Communication throughout the Division (2) A focus on member Education (esp. Competent Leader) (3) Establish a plan for club Membership Growth (4) Create Opportunities for Future Leadership This four-fold vision will help keep our division strong and vibrant in the coming year. In addition to the vision, weve had a successful start to the new 2013-2014 year. Our TLI, held at the very end of June, had a large turnout. Professional speaker Dana LaMon, DTM, gave us a wonderful key note presentation on making each moment count. Many thanks to all the volunteers (esp. event organizers and past Division F governors Janet Riley, ACS, ALS and Maria Azevedo, ACG, ALB)! As a result of the training and the hard work of our area governors, we had 95% of clubs turn in their officer lists on-time! In addition, we were able to train 70% of all club officers. Outstanding! On a serious note: Toastmaster clubs Yosemite & Tuolumne Talkers have been impacted by the CA Rim fire that is still burning. Please keep them in your thoughts and/or prayers as their communities deal with this natural disaster. One final announcement: we had our first new club charter in July! Please join me in welcoming the new club at UC Merced: Linguistic Lynx. Woohoo! Here's to a successful year in Division F where We is KEY!!

I am fortunate to be working with a group of conscientious and committed Area Governors. They are great leaders who truly want to see our division and its members succeed. The empowering work that they are doing with the clubs in their areas is a reflection of the education and training they have received as toastmasters. Division Ds Area Governors believe in going the extra mile as servants to their fellow members. Division D has a rich history of success and we will continue to strive to improve the educational experience of our members. I look forward to listening, laughing and learning from you all in 2013 - 2014.

Honor and Integrity!

As we enter the beginning year, creativity comes to mind to build up the clubs. Division H is a toddler and no longer the baby of the Toastmaster family. I have work ahead of me to lead this division into the goals needed with workshops of speakers that are in Las Vegas to rekindle the spark in the members as well as the community. The Area Governors have rolled up their sleeves, and jumped in running. With this perseverance, Division H will be Presidents Distinguished. Our division theme is Honor and Integrity. We will honor our club members with the support to assist them to populate their club with new members through integrity. With contest season around the corner, Division H presents A Night in the Orient. We will have a dinner and a show. I am excited for our contest, and I look forward to the outcome to see who will move on to the district level.

Strive To Excel!
History was made in District 33! In 2013, as our District 33 celebrates its 40th Ruby Anniversary, a new division in District 33 was created. Division J today was formerly a part of Division B Ventura County Clubs in California, and the Ventura County East, comprising Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Simi Valley has become Division J. We are two months into our term and we have seen an exceptional spirit of team work accomplishing 100% officers trained. Division J has successfully launched a Division website www.divisionjd33.org. We have implemented an easy online payment system for contests and events http://www.divisionjd33.org/contests/ division-j-contest/shopping-cart. We have also started an online educational Webinar Series on a monthly basis. Division J has a wonderful squad of Area Governors that are enthusiastically striding along very well with our goals. We have exceptional officers that are giving their precious time and effort to help the division in every possible way. Our goal is to engage our members and work as a team to help each and every member to achieve their goals and in turn our goals. We will give our best to achieve our goals and dreams at individual, club, area and division levels. Lets Strive to Excel in every aspect of our Toastmasters experience.

Our first TLI for the 2013-2014 year was a great success due to the Greatness of our volunteers, instructors, and the commitment of Division G Area Governors and Club officers. Special thanks go to our motivational keynote speaker, Ms. Sherrie Parker, followed by a special humorous workshop presentation, Bills Humor Toolbox by Mr. Bill Parker. Through follow-up training efforts, Division G has achieved 100% of Clubs with four or more officers trained, six Clubs with 100% of their officers trained, demonstrating the value resides in what they give and not what they are capable of receiving.

New membership is vital to reinvigorating our existing Clubs. Division G has several strong Clubs that have excelled in membership growth; sharing that experience and benefits with the Division membership will increase the value of our Greatness aboveall others! We will establish a stronger voice sharing the benefits of Toastmasters International in the Community. It will be through that voice our current Club and membership experience, in to new Club and Membership addition growth, will Gravitate our Division to Greatness!

In closing, I would like to share with you one last inspirational thought from Charles de Montesquieu: to become truly Great, one has to stand with people, not above them. The Value of our membership is to stand with each other and our clubs to achieve Division Greatness in 2013-2014.

DISTRICT 33 TOASTMASTERS IS ABOUT BUILDING LEADERS AT THE SUPPER CLUB, WE MAKE IT HAPPEN
Every Toastmasters club has its own distinct personality, stemming not only from the interpersonal dynamics of its members, but also from the unique way in which it implements its core mission and vision. Common to all clubs are the goals of developing member communications and leadership skills, but unique to The Supper Club is the emphasis that it places on the cultivation of leadership ability through an expanded role played by the Toastmaster at each meeting. The Supper Club holds a dinnertime meeting once a month at a different restaurant in East Ventura County area. At each meeting, the role of the Toastmaster goes beyond that of the Toastmaster in most other clubs. The Supper Clubs Toastmaster is responsible for the planning and conduct of the entire meeting, either by direct personal action or through delegation to others. The Toastmaster chooses the venue, selects the theme, arranges for a meeting flyer to be prepared and publicized, ensures that roles are assigned, and of course conducts the meeting. And at the end of the meeting, it is a tradition in the Supper Club that the general evaluator comments not only on the meeting but on how well it was planned in advance and carried out. In taking this all on, the Toastmaster doesnt have to go it all alone. Since the focus of the club is in learning by doing, there are many resources within the club membership to turn to for support. The majority of the club members have attained the level of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). One is a Past District Governor and winner of the District Best Mentor award. Others are past or present District, Division, and Area officers. All are always willing to freely share their experience and helpful advice. With its focus on leadership, the Supper Club is still by no means lacking in communications training. With its flexible meeting format custom-tailored by each months Toastmaster, the club provides an ideal setting for accommodating the delivery of specialty speeches, including the longer projects often found in advanced manuals. Is planning and leading a meeting in the Supper Club a daunting undertaking? Not at all. Its exquisitely Richard Baumann, ACB ALS fun and rewarding to take on the challenge and be successful. Remember that The Supper Club holds The Supper Club President a wealth of talent at mentoring and coaching. The club is rich with knowledge and experience yet warm with friendliness. If youre looking to advance to the next level in your leadership ability and are willing to invest in just one additional meeting per month, then The Supper Club is for you. Check our website, at http://thesupperclub.toastmastersclubs.org/ to see where we meet each month and come join us! If you want more information, feel free to contact The Supper Clubs VP Public Relations, Brenda OBrien, at forbren@yahoo.com or call 805-217-8771.
