Introduction
Breaking News.....

After an emergency meeting the parents of your school have banned the use of 
the Internet at school! After a unanimous vote to put a hold on all Internet 
activities the parents vow that they will never again allow their students 
to be put in danger by giving them access to theInternet. These parents 
believe that the Internet is nothing more than an unsafe playground. After 
much pleading by the students, the parents have agreed to meet again next 
week for a final vote. 

Will the Internet be banned forever? Or can the students change their future?

The Task
Your parents are trying to ban the Internet! It is up to you and your 
teammates to make sure that does not happen. You need to prove to your 
parents that you understand how to be safe on the Internet and you will only 
have one chance to do so. At the next parent meeting, you and your team will 
present a poster presentation that covers Internet Safety. To accomplish 
this goal you and your team will each choose a different role and gather 
information about different aspects of the Internet. You must become an 
expert in your area so that you are able to persuade your parents to vote in 
favour of allowing the Internet back into the classroom. You and your group 
must compile the information you find into a 5­8 minute presentation that 
focuses on Internet Safety. You will also compile a list of the top 10 rules 
for staying safe on the Internet to be displayed as a reminder to 
surf safely on the Internet.

The Process
1. As a group review the following roles. Then determine which role each 
member of your team will play. Visit the different roles for a more detailed 
explanation.

2. Record your assignments on the Role Sheet. Turn this sheet into Mrs. Hughes.

3. As a group look over the Evaluation page to make sure you understand 
exactly what is expected of you. 

4. Return to the role which you have been assigned and review what is 
expected. Make sure and look over the questions related to your topic.

5. Use the resources provided in your area to answer your specific 
questions. Think about any other possible questions parents might have about 
this area or topic. Keep track of where you find the information you are 
using for you answers. Also make sure to keep an eye out for possible 
additions to your Top 10 List of ways to stay safe on the internet.

6. After you have all your questions answered, discuss as a group the 
Poster and Presentation.

7. As a group compile your list of the Top 10 ways to stay safe on the 
Internet.
8. Make sure everything is ready for your presentation. Fill out the Group 
Evaluation sheets and turn them in to Mrs. Hughes. You will evaluate each 
person in your group.

9. Present your findings. Good luck!

Evaluation
What am I responsible for?

Each student will be responsible for completing the following items:

    1.  Individual questions from your role.
  2.  A group evaluation for each member of your team, your self included. 
    3.  A contribution to the poster.
    4.  Become an expert in your area in order to present your findings 
        and answer questions about your topic during the presentation.

What is my group responsible for?

Each group must complete the following:

    1.  A completed role sheet.  (Mrs. Hughes will provide in class)
    2.  A poster presentation that is least 5­8 minutes long and follows the criteria 
listed on the rubric.  The poster must include the “Top 10 ways to stay 
safe on the Internet.”
    3.  Present their project in a way that will persuade their audience to vote in 
favor of keeping the Internet in school.
 
How will it be graded? (100 points possible)

Role Questions (20 points)

        1.  Each student must hand in their rough copy notes with questions and 
answers listed.
 Poster and Presentation (50 points)

        1.  Review rubric for exact criteria.

    Group Evaluation (30 points)

        1.  Each group member will be evaluated by the other members of the 
group.
        2.  Each student will complete a self evaluation of how they worked in their 
group.
        3.  Each student will complete an evaluation for each member of the group.
        4.  Review rubric for exact criteria.

Conclusion
Congratulations!  You have learned a lot of information on the broad and 
complex topic of Internet Safety.  You should be proud of yourselves! What 
other parts of Internet Safety could still be explored? Remember, learning 
never stops.

Super Spammer

You use e­mail all of the time! If you had a choice, e­mail would be the 
only form of communication. You love sending and receiving e­mails, no 
matter who they are from. 

Although you do not mind how many e­mails you receive, your parents do. It 
is time to get smart, and learn a little something about what is appropriate 
and what is not. This is the only way you are going to be able to show your 
parents you are responsible enough to use the internet. If you are not 
careful they may take all your e­mail opportunities away.

You love looking for information on the internet. You can spend hours 
looking for one small piece of information because you love to see where 
other links go. 

Your parents are very concerned about the time they feel you are wasting on 
the internet. They do not see the internet as a valuable source of 
information and would much rather see you using a book to gather 
information. It is time to learn how much the internet really does 
have to offer. You need to show your parents that the Internet is a valuable 
place to get information.

Noteworthy Netiquette
You use messenger and write emails.  You write what you want on­line and 
express yourself in many different ways. 
Your parents are very concerned about your lack of manners when it comes to 
the Internet. It is time to learn some online manners. Unless you can learn 
some basic skills for how to use the Internet appropriately you may lose 
the privilege.

Chatting Champ
You love to talk. You love to stay online for hours at a time chatting with 
online friends.

Although you do not think chatting online is very dangerous your parents do. 
It is time to learn about the proper methods of chatting and how to keep 
yourself safe in online forums. If you can not show your parents that you 
have a good understanding of the do and don'ts of online chatting you and 
your fellow classmates might lose the privilege forever.
