The School of Engineering and Applied Science is

pleased to welcome all incoming graduate students.


We ask that you take a few moments to go through

this presenta<on and then answer the ques<ons in the EXAM sec<on on Blackboard.

Once you have successfully completed the ques<ons in the EXAM sec<on, you will have completed the online orienta<on. Students who fail to complete the online orienta<on will have a registra<on hold placed on their record for the Fall 2012 semester.

Are you an interna<onal student on an F1 or J1 visa? If YES, you must check in with the Interna7onal Services Oce (ISO). Does your admission leLer state that we need a nal, ocial transcript for a degree that you have previously earned? If yes, you must request that it be sent as soon as possible to the Oce of Graduate Admissions 725 23rd St NW, Room 103, Washington, DC 20052. If you are under 26 years of age, have you completed the immuniza<on cer<ca<on? If yes, Take your Immuniza7on Cer7ca7on Form to the Student Health Services Oce at: 2141 K. St NW, Suite 501 Do you have any holds on your student account? If yes, Contact the oce that placed the hold ie: ISO; Student Health Oce; your academic department.

Have you met with your academic advisor? Your approved Form 1* must be turned in to your departments Advance Degree Program Coordinator before the end of the semester. Students should register online for classes through Gweb or RTF-EZ. However, students need to submit paper registra7on RTF for research courses, departmental approval required courses, courses outside your major. Have you registered for classes? Once you have registered for classes, you should go to Colonial Central in the Marvin Center ground oor to pick up your GWorld card.
*Form 1 is the academic plan with designated courses outlined by your advisor to receive your degree.

The Registra4on Transac4on Form (RTF) must be submiLed to your advisor, then the Associate Deans Oce (Tompkins 101). Please check with your department for processing requirements but never deliver it directly to the Oce of the Registrar. The Registra4on Transac4on Form is used for:

Excep<ons to academic policy together with the Pe<<on describing the excep<on requested Registra<on beyond the 4th week of the semester (2nd week of summer) and for withdrawals beyond the 8th week (4th week for summer) Grade mode changes (pass/fail, credit/no-credit, audit) Con<nuous Enrollment/Leave of Absence Credit hour changes Time conicts

The RTF-EZ is used for:

Registra<on into closed courses (Not to exceed the classroom capacity) Courses that require permission of the instructor or department Major/Level/Class/Degree restric<ons RTF-EZ must be submiLed in person to The Oce of the Registrar, Colonial Central, Marvin Center Ground Floor.

I want to take a research course. What do I need to do? Speak to your academic advisor to have the following forms signed. Registra<on Transac<on Form Research Course Request Form - this form also needs to be signed by the department chair before it can be processed.

All students must be aware of important registra<on dates. Note that there are fees and/or academic penal<es associated with late class add/drops. Click here to read and understand policies regarding withdrawals (dropped classes) and refunds. Note that full tui7on is not refunded for courses dropped during the semester. Did you know that the School of Engineering and Applied Science has its own compu4ng facili4es?

The compu<ng facility provides, coordinates and manages a comprehensive integrated set of computers, soeware and network resources dedicated to engineering and computer science programs. Once you have a GWorld Card, please visit the Schools compu<ng facili<es on the 4th oor of Tompkins Hall to request a SEAS account.

How do I know who my academic advisor is? Your academic advisors name and contact informa7on can be found on your admission leber. Are academic advisors professors (faculty members) or professional advising sta? All of our advisors are faculty members. I have been in touch with the Advanced Degree Program Coordinator in my department. Can he or she advise me? No, the Departmental Advanced Degree Program Coordinators are here to guide you through the administra7ve process. They are not qualied to advise you on academic mabers. Can I request to change my academic advisor? Yes. Please speak with your departments Advanced Degree Program Coordinator for instruc7ons on reques7ng a new advisor. How do I go about mee<ng with my advisor? Visit your advisor during his or her oce hours or request an appointment.

A student who receives two grades of F or three grades below B- is terminated and, ordinarily, will not be readmiLed as a degree candidate. A student may not repeat for credit a course in which he or she has received a grade of C- or above, unless required to do so by the department chair. A wriLen statement requiring the student to repeat such a course must be submiLed to the registrar by the department chair.

I took courses at another university that I would like to have transferred into my graduate program at GW. How do I request that these credits be transferred to my current program? Discuss it with your advisor; students can transfer up to two courses (six credits), with both the advisors and department chairs permission. The Applica7on for Graduate Transfer Credit must be completed and accompanied by an ocial transcript and course descrip7on. Before applying to my current degree program, I took courses at GWU as a non-degree student. Will these courses count towards my degree? These courses are treated the same as transfer courses. Please consult with your academic advisor to complete a Level Change Form.

You must complete a Form 1 , the program of your study, and have it approved by both your advisor and the department chair by the end of your rst semester. The form is available in hard-copy from your departments Advanced Degree Program Coordinator.

You must be enrolled every semester (Fall and Spring) for the dura<on of your program. If you are unable to enroll in a given semester, you must request a Leave of Absence. Only two Leave of Absences are permiLed during your program. CE/LOA Forms must be signed by your academic advisor and must be accompanied by an RTF. If you are an interna<onal student (on an F1 or J1 Visa) reques<ng a Leave of Absence, you must consult with your ISO advisor in addi<on to your academic advisor. Students who fail to request a Leave of Absence will be dropped from their program and will be required to reapply for admission.

Con<nuous Enrollment applies only to students having completed all the requirements for gradua<on and awai<ng gradua<on at the end of the semester. This form must accompany a Registra<on Transac<on Form. A student may only apply for Con<nuous Enrollment ONCE.

When you are ready to graduate, you must submit an Applica<on for Gradua<on. Everyone must submit an Applica<on for Gradua<on by the deadline (Spring - February 1; Summer - July 1; Fall - October 1). Please consult with your academic advisor or your Advanced Degree Program Coordinator the semester before you will graduate to be sure that you will meet all deadlines.

GW and the School of Engineering and Applied Science and its students must follow the GW Code of Academic Integrity. Any form of Plagiarism and chea<ng leads to academic penalty and possible termina<on. All students must read and understand the Universitys Code of Academic Integrity.

Interna4onal students (F1 or J1 visa) have both an academic responsibility and an immigra4on responsibility.

If you need to leave the country for any reason, you must complete a Con<nuous Enrollment Form and speak with your ISO advisor, whose name can be found on your I-20 Visa. If you need to drop below nine credit hours in any semester (Fall or Spring), you must discuss it with your academic advisor and your ISO advisor. You must have a 3.0 GPA or beLer or your immigra<on status is in jeopardy. You must have a GPA average of 3.0 or beLer in your MS program or a 3.4 GPA or beLer in your PhD program in order to graduate. Build a rela<onship with your ISO advisor and keep him or her updated on any changes to your academic program.
