Trails Around Big South Fork
Trails Around the Big South Fork Region

The trails in the Big South Fork (BSF) are becoming known
throughout the equine world and are undoubtedly some of the
best trails in the Southeast….some would say in the nation.
There is a lot happening in the region — too much to mention
in this space; however, here are a few highlights to keep you
informed. We hope that if you have never visited our beautiful
area, that you will come and visit soon. If you have already
been to ride, camp, or just relax, be sure to come again for a
weekend or week. It is a great time to buy your dream home
and enjoy equestrian living at its best.

East Fork Stables, the granddaddy of the equine trails in the

BSF region, has added several themed events to keep riders
entertained after exploring their over 100 miles of well-marked
and maintained trails. The Mardi Gras, Luau, Kentucky Derby
and Oktoberfest Rides are just a few to keep cowboys and
cowgirls coming back. Spruce Creek Stables is the newest
campground in the area featuring 9 campsites with full hook-
up and horse stalls plus direct access to many trails. Mike
Archambault and his mom, JoAnn Roberts, have taken their
love of horses and God’s creation and are reaching out to
children who need guidance, direction, and hope with their New
Beginnings Youth Ranch centered on an equestrian lifestyle.
They let their light shine on these children as they guide them
through their equestrian ministry, teaching the children through
the animals they care for. They are making a difference in the

Camping Facilities
Camping in the Big South Fork

If you are looking for an opportunity to “get back to nature”,

camping in the Big South Fork region is an excellent way
to do so with many camps offering easy access to trails with
plenty of scenic beauty all around. The popularity of camping
continues to grow, with the increased RV ownership by the
growing baby boomer population and the desire for families to
get back to nature and to enjoy a simple way of life. Camping
allows families the opportunity to share experiences unlike other
lodging experiences. You can’t roast marshmallows in the hotel
room floor – at least not without getting arrested. Out here, the
bugs can even become a source of entertainment. Fireflies light
up the night skies with their dazzling dances and many other
nocturnal creatures serenade you to sleep with their melodic
sounds. If you are looking for something a little less rural,
Deer Run RV Resort is located near Crossville the Golf Capital
of Tennessee. They were selected as the Tennessee ARVC
Campground of the Year 2007-2008.

of the wilderness! Get ready to enjoy gorgeous overlooks,
geological wonders, and awesome trails. In the spring and fall,
get ready for some awesome views and dramatic color! The
spring offers redbuds and dogwoods which dot the trails, hills,
and valleys. The fall’s blanket of color draping the mountains is
spectacular. Brimstone, owned and operated by Mark Love and
managed by daughter Erika Schmelter, started back in 2005 with
a vision to offer the best OHV trail system and give families and
OHV enthusiasts a place to play, enjoy the outdoors, and create
memories.

Brimstone has grown to over 10,000 annual visitors with

folks coming from all over the country, Canada, and France!
Awesome customer service, new trails, rustic cabins, RV sites,
campsites, and guide service are available with restaurants and
shopping nearby. The nearby town of Huntsville, TN welcomes
all ATV and outdoor enthusiasts. Yamaha USA uses Brimstone
as one of their main demonstration sites and it has become
their premier demo spot in the country during Brimstone’s
popular Annual White Knuckle event held every Memorial Day
Weekend. This year it will be held May 22-24 and will include
lots of fun for the entire family. The 2009 event will include
two days of music, guided rides, drag races, sled pulls, mud

in 2008.

2009 plans to be even bigger including two evenings of fantastic

music, including popular Daryle Singletary and the band
Ricochet. Is this the next Woodstock of the OHV world in the

While in Rugby, make sure to visit the new Rugby Visitors’
Center with interpretive exhibits, audio narrative of what it was
like in Rugby in 1880 and “step back in time” to this quaint,
historic village. Historic Rugby offers many workshops, events,
and themed dinners throughout the year. If you like to hike,
great hiking trails in and around this historic village include my
favorite — the gentleman’s swimming hole. Many other trails
meander through forests along trails, some leading into the Big
South Fork. Historic Rugby is perfect for group gatherings,
including church and school groups, tour buses, small meetings
(40-100 people). They hosted visitors from all over the country

the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and west of
interstate I-75. Your family will enjoy the 16-mile round trip upon the
100 year old, Kentucky & Tennessee Railway known as the “Route of the
Painted Rocks”. This ride is full of spectacular vistas, lush vegetation
and free flowing mountain streams as it descends 600 feet into the river
gorge. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and remnants from
the communities that once lined the railway now serve as reminders of
days gone by.

Regular departures, April through October, upon the K&T Special take
3 hours and include a new section of track through the mining camp
of Worley. Worley was the largest mining community along the K&T.
Today, a few foundations are all that remain. The National Park Service
has installed interpretive panels that can be viewed from the train. The
train makes a stop at Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp, a National Park
Service outdoor interpretive site. Blue Heron was built by the Stearns
