Cook-off Fired up Albany County!

Sheriff Wins by One Point
Albany Countys cook-off competition was on fire today! In honor of National Preparedness month, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple Sr. went head to head in a cooking competition. Using only ingredients from their emergency supply kits, the competitors created dishes that caused the judges jaws to drop. Recipes on the menu included a tuna pizza, butter bean salad and chocolate peanut butter pie. Along with the help of ShopRites own Chef Melissa Doney Sheridan, CEC, the panel of judges, including Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan, Albany County Legislator Mary Lou B. Connolly and Reverend Stephen Lalor of the Albany County Citizen Corps, judged one entre and one dessert from each competitor based on appearance, taste and the use of ingredients from their kits. The judges picked Sheriff Apples dishes overall. The event helped to showcase the importance of being prepared for an unexpected disaster. ShopRites own Chef Melissa Doney Sheridan, CEC, was the perfect emcee, combining preparedness facts with a healthy dose of commentary. You may know her as a chef on Hells Kitchen. Sheriff Apple surprised me with the amount of talent he has in the kitchen! said McCoy. I hope this will inspire people to create their own emergency supply kit to be ready for any emergency. Building an emergency kit and making a plan for what to do in any dangerous situation are the first steps toward being prepared. It is also important to be informed and involved about specific emergencies that are possible to your region. This was an exciting way to relay crucial information about being prepared, said Apple. You need to be prepared and not take for granted that youll have time to make a kit once an emergency strikes.

"ShopRite was proud to host today's event which helped raise awareness about such an important issue, said ShopRite Supermarkets Tom Urtz, Vice President of Human Resources and Community Affairs. During an emergency, your local ShopRite becomes the community hub as we help prepare you to weather the storm and assist you in returning to normalcy thereafter. Throughout the month of September, shoppers can enter for a chance to win an emergency supply kit of their own at the Colonie ShopRite at 1730 Central Avenue, Colonie.
