Part A:
Open source software is software whose source code is given freely, enabling users to copy, redistribute and modify the program to their own liking without paying a fee for it. Propriety software on the other hand is software distributed under a commercial license agreement and usually for a certain fee. The recipient of propriety software also would not have rights to copy or modify the software. One of the main differences between open source software and propriety software is the costs. Open source software is free for public use while propriety software is for purchase. (Health Information Technology and Quality Improvement) Propriety software also is usually created by an organization that has exclusive rights to the softwares source code while open source software is usually created by a community of users or developers. Most propriety software also has a more secure support system while open source softwares do not have this. In addition to this, propriety software users cannot modify the programs because the source code is hidden in a vault in the program. Open source softwares on the other hand have open source codes (hence the name) allowing the user to modify redistribute the program in ways they like. An example of the above softwares is the Microsoft Word and the OpenOffice Writer. Microsoft Word is propriety software program while the OpenOffice Writer is open source software. Both of these programs can be used to design a newsletter. There are many similar functions between the two programs except for a few differences. One of the features of Microsoft Word is that it has a Grammer check feature that is useful in designing a newsletter, while Writer does not. Another feature that Microsoft has is personalized menus which displays frequently used options and hides little used options saving screen space. (General Differences in Use between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office, 2008) If I had a designer at a local company I would use Microsoft Word as it is the most popular used, has added features that would aid me in my work , and lastly it has a secure support system that I can rely on if I have any trouble in using the program.
