Time: 2 hrs.

[PART-A] Q: 1. Attempt all questions. [6 X 1 = 6] (a) Define single line diagram and explain with the help of an example. (b) Define per unit value. Also list the advantage of using per unit value. (c) What are the symmetrical components? Write the symmetrical components of a three phase system. (d) Differentiate between symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault. (e) Define and explain short circuit capacity of a bus. (f) What do you mean by sub-transient, transient and steady state synchronous reactance of a synchronous generator? [PART-B] Q: 2. Attempt any three questions. [3 X 3 = 9] (a) Show that the per unit equivalent impedance of a two winding transformer is the same, whether the calculation is made from the high voltage side or the low voltage side. (b) The line currents in a three phase supply to an unbalanced load are , and . The phase sequence is abc. Determine the sequence components of currents. (c) Derive the expression for power in three phase system in terms of symmetrical components. (d) Fig.1 shows single line diagram of a single phase circuit. Using the base values of 3 kVA & 230 V, draw the per unit circuit diagram and determine the per unit impedance and per unit source voltage. Also calculate the load current both in per unit and in ampere.

[PART-C] Q: 3. Attempt any three questions. [5 X 3 = 15] (a) Fig.2 shows single line diagram of a power system. The rating of generators and transformers are given below:

Draw per unit circuit diagram using base values of 30 MVA and 6.6 kV in the circuit of generator-1. (b) Explain the phenomena of transients in series R-L circuit and derive the condition at which, (i) the dc offset component will be zero (ii) the dc offset component will be maximum

(c) A three phase transmission line operating at 33 kV and having a resistance and reactance of 6 and 21 respectively is connected to the generating station bus bars through a 3 MVA step up transformer, which has a reactance of 5%. Connected to the bus bars are two generators, each with a reactance of 10%. Calculate the short circuit MVA, if a three phase short circuit occurs at the load end of the transmission line. (d) A synchronous generator is connected to infinite bus through a 138 kV transmission line as shown in fig. 3. A solid three phase short circuit occurs on the line near circuit breaker CB1. Before the short circuit the receiving end bus voltage was 1 pu at unity power factor, and the generator was 75 % loaded on the basis of its MVA rating. Determine sub-transient, transient and steady state short circuit current.
