Hymn of Praise
TRUST AND OBEY
Verse 1 When we walk with the Lord In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will He abides with us still, And with all who will trust And obey. Chorus Trust and obey For theres no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey. Verse 2 Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil he doth richly repay; Not a grief nor a loss, Not a frown nor a cross, But is blest if we trust and obey. Verse 3 But we never can prove The delights of His love Until all on the altar we lay, For the favor He shows And the joy He bestows Are for those who will Trust and obey.

1 Samuel 9:1-10 (NRSV)

1

Now the donkeys of Kish, Sauls father, had strayed. So Kish said to his son Saul, Take one of the boys with you; go and look for the donkeys. 4He passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then he passed through the land of Benjamin, but they did not find them.
3

When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the boy who was with him, Let us turn back, or my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and worry about us. 6 But he said to him, There is a man of God in this town; he is a man held in honor. Whatever he says always comes true. Let us go there now; perhaps he will tell us about the journey on which we have set out. 7Then Saul replied to the boy, But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no

HYMN OF PRAISE/UNISON SCRIPTURES

There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish son of Abiel son of Zeror son of Becorath son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. 2He had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he; he stood head and shoulders above everyone else.

Unison Scriptures
present to bring to the man of God. What have we? 8The boy answered Saul again, Here, I have with me a quarter shekel of silver; I will give it to the man of God, to tell us our way. 9(Formerly in Israel, anyone who went to inquire of God would say, Come, let us go to the seer; for the one who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.) 10Saul said to the boy, Good; come, let us go. So they went to the town where the man of God was.
11:00 a.m.
5

When they got to Zuph, Saul said to the young man with him, Enough of this. Lets go back. Soon my father is going to forget about the donkeys and start worrying about us. He replied, Not so fast. Theres a holy man in this town. He carries a lot of weight around here. What he says is always right on the mark. Maybe he can tell us where to go. Saul said, If we go, what do we have to give him? Theres no more bread in our sacks. Weve nothing to bring as a gift to the holy man. Do we have anything else?

1 Samuel 9:1-10 (The Message)

1-2

There was a man from the tribe of Benjamin named Kish. He was the son of Abiel, grandson of Zeror, great-grandson of Becorath, great-great-grandson of Aphiaha Benjaminite of stalwart character. He had a son, Saul, a most handsome young man. There was none finerhe literally stood head and shoulders above the crowd!

8-9

The servant spoke up, Look, I just happen to have this silver coin! Ill give it to the holy man and hell tell us how to proceed! (In former times in Israel, a person who wanted to seek Gods word on a matter would say, Lets visit the Seer, because the one we now call the Prophet used to be called the Seer.)

Some of Kishs donkeys got lost. Kish said to his son, Saul, take one of the servants with you and go look for the donkeys. Saul took one of the servants and went to find the donkeys. They went into the hill country of Ephraim around Shalisha, but didnt find them. Then they went over to Shaalimno luck. Then to Jabin, and still nothing.
3-4

Good, said Saul, lets go. And they set off for the town where the holy man lived.

Raise The Roof

Then I said to them, You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace. . . . They replied, Let us start rebuilding. So they began this good work. Nehemiah 2:17-18 NIV
Village, Welcome to the Raise the Roof Campaign to rebuild the walls at our church home, Trinity United Church of Christ. I am delighted to report that as of September 11, 2013, we have received pledges of over $1.5 million from 255 families/members, putting us at slightly over 30% of our goal of $5 million. On behalf of Pastor Moss, myself, and the Raise the Roof Stewardship Committee, congratulations to our Trinity UCC Board of Directors, Pastoral Staff, Executive Leadership Team, and Office of the Senior Pastor for achieving 100% participation in Raise The Roof pledges! Who's got next? We praise God for the provision God is making to restore Trinity UCC! As many of your are aware, the Raise the Roof campaign is raising funds to replace much of the 20-year-old infrastructure of our church, principally our roof and HVAC systems. At the All-Call meeting on August 28th, we voted as a congregation to install a Green roof, one that: Returns clean water to the environment Generates energy and allows for potential energy reimbursements Insulates the building, saving on energy bills (we expect total energy savings of 25% once work is completed) Can last up to 30 years Provides skill development for workers Energy savings will be placed in a special fund to be available for future upgrades You can get involved by opting into the campaign at any of the Raise the Roof tables in the Narthex and Atrium, following worship services. In the materials you receive, you will find more information on Raise the Roof, as well as a pledge card and envelope. Once you have made your pledge decision, complete the card and return it to Trinity UCC Accounting (remember to take advantage of Automatic Giving/ACS to be sure your pledges are consistently applied). God bless you,

Rev. Mark A. Smith Minister of Stewardship

To Do Justice
CONGRESS HONORS BIRMINGHAM CHURCH BOMBING VICTIMS

This past Tuesday, House and Senate leaders formally awarded Congress highest civilian honor to four girls killed in an Alabama church bombing nearly 50 years ago. The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to 14-year-olds Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, and 11-year-old Denise McNair. The ceremony came five days before the 50th anniversary of their deaths inside the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. The girls were killed in the explosion of a bomb planted outside the church by white supremacists. The attack shocked the nation and helped spur passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Past recipients of the medal include Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King.

TO DO JUSTICE

To Do Justice
Mrs. Monica Moss Addresses the Farm Bill Failure
For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. 44They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? 45He will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Matthew 25:42-45
42

My Dear Trinity Family,

As a food justice advocate, I am deeply moved to raise my voice in response to the implications of the Farm Bill legislation currently under consideration. However, as a mother who has access to wholesome food to feed my children, I am appalled. As a citizen, I am terrified; and, as a Christian woman of faith, I am called to action for those of us who will be most deeply impacted! Our federal government is in the process of stripping out legislation that provides food for millions of Americans, particularly children and seniors, the most vulnerable among us. If these significant cuts are implemented, we can be assured that people, many of whom already face daily food insecurities, will indeed starve. Proposals from the U.S. House and Senate include: Limiting Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)/Food Stamps resulting in a $90 a month cut for over 1.7 million people Changing requirements so that 1.8 million lose SNAP benefits; 210,000 children lose free school meal access Reducing Commodity Supplemental Food Program for Seniors and Seniors Farmers Markets Remove/Reduce programs for Native Americans, including Food Distribution, Native grown food support and support for Urban Food Enterprise Development

It is estimated that over 3 million Americans would lose access to SNAP - 136,000 in Illinois! We can do better to serve and protect one of our most basic and important needs as human beings - access to wholesome and nutritious food. Your, our, voices must be heard. Please take a moment to call AND write your Illinois U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative, and tell them that we must retain food assistance programs for the most vulnerable among us. For your convenience, information for our senators is below, as well as a web site to locate the telephone numbers and addresses of your U.S. Representative..
