INTRODUCTION Fijis agricultural sector is the backbone of its economy. Agriculture is an important sector to the Fijian Economy.

While there are some conceptual limitations associated with GDP as a basis for assessing agricultural policy initiatives, changes in GDP represent a potentially valuable guide for a wide range of government decisions. Agriculture remains the mainstay of Fijis economy. Agriculture contributes around 28% to total employment in the formal sector in Fiji. Directly and indirectly employs around 65% of total population. GDP contribution estimated around 10.49% (2008), with Sugar and subsistence dominating the sector. It accounts for nearly 45% of all export earnings in 2008. National food security critically depends on the resilience of our agriculture sector. Sugarcane is Fijis most important agricultural industry, accounting for over one-third of all of Fijis industrial activity. Indigenous Fijians own most farmland and local residents of Indian ancestry farm it and produce about 90% of all sugarcane, which is then processed into raw sugar and molasses in the Fiji Sugar Corporation, which is predominantly owned and run by the government. The European Union is the largest export market for Fijis sugar. Moreover, Coconut and copra are also important agricultural products that are widely used and exported from Fiji. Fiji also grows and exports bananas, pineapples, watermelons, cereal, rice, corn, ginger, cocoa and tobacco. Agriculture has the potential in other sectors such as tourism and agro-industries and as a major economic activity in the rural areas; agriculture plays an important role in the process of rural development. Having a rich resource base and tropical climate, Fiji has an advantage in producing a wide variety of tropical fruits and vegetables given Fijis fast expanding tourism sector, agricultural growth is necessary to supply high local hotel demand. Thus, the potential for Fijis agriculture sector is in production for local consumption, export of high value commodities and niche agricultural produce. In addition, government plays a very vital role in the agricultural sector to enhance its production and efficiency to achieve greater targets. But this is done with a lot of planning and proper implementation of appropriate policies which has a motive of prospering this industry. Also, this assignment will show a brief analysis of policies that are used, reasons of its implementation and how this would benefit the agricultural sector and Fijis economy. The Ministry of Agriculture wises to influence market forces through vibrant and sustainable agriculture activity that reduces poverty, reduces the risk of food insecurity and increases the contribution to GDP. Furthermore, this Department has national responsibility for the enhancement of food production and income security through agricultural sector growth. In the short term is intended to lead to the achievement of the following: Quick economic recovery; Food and Income Security; Poverty Alleviation; Sustainable management of natural resources. The policy decision includes; Shift in policy from one of supply and production

driven to one that is Demand Driven is an important reform in current thrust for agricultural development. However, this is to give development priority to; strengthen policy, legal, regulatory framework for sustainable agriculture; Increased production, productivity and resilience of crops and livestock system; Sustainable managed terrestrial, freshwater and marine resources. Currently, department has major development perspective in commercial agriculture and market access. Therefore, inorder to improve the economic condition of Fiji, government and Ministry of agriculture closely looks into various policies and implements the most needed policies for the betterment of Fijis recovering economy. Also, a detailed analysis of what policies, methods or Reforms the government or the policy makers have implemented why they implemented it and what effect it has on the economy are discussed in the following subtopics of this research assignment.
