Subsea 7 is developing and implementing leading-edge pipeline welding technologies to satisfy evolving market demand (both in terms of technical specifications and volume) and also to meet increasingly stringent pipeline fabrication codes and operator specifications.
Since 2006, Subsea 7 has operated an in-house central technical authority for pipeline welding, NDT and field-joint coating in rigid pipelines globally. Underpinning this philosophy, Subsea 7 has recently made three important strategic investments in applied pipeline welding technology development: entering into a technical partnership with CRC-Evans Pipeline International, one of the worlds leading designers and manufacturers of automatic welding systems for pipeline construction committing to an extensive welding R&D programme to meet future industry demands opening in 2013 of a new, expanded, Global Pipeline Welding Development Centre.

The increased demands on pipeline and riser specifications call for compatible advances in welding and inspection technology. We have an extensive ongoing welding Research and Development programme to enhance fatigue life and improve the quality of performance across a range of pipeline materials including conventional carbon steel, corrosion-resistant alloys and high-strength steel applications. Subsea 7 has specialist capability in developing and delivering state-of-the-art mechanised welding technology. Our technology is aimed at giving our clients the assurance of quality and performance they require at a competitive cost. Below is an update on some of our current welding technology programmes.

2005
First J-lay welding using the GMAW process for high fatigue performance clad steel catenary riser (SCR) in 10 and 12inch dia pipe for Exxon Erha Project, Nigeria.

2006/7 First reel-lay SCR system for Chevrons Blind Faith, Gulf of Mexico, Project. Welding of the 12km of 7-inch dia line was carried out using an in-house developed hot-wire GTAW mechanised welding system. 2007 First S-lay welding single and dual torch GMAW process for high fatigue performance - 18-inch dia carbon steel pipe for BP Greater Plutonio Project, Angola.
2008/9 First lazy wave SCR system fabricated by Subsea 7 at its Ubu spoolbase, Brazil, and installed by reel-lay for Shells BC10 Project. 2009/10 First clad-lined reeled fabrication for Subsea 7, for BPs Skarv Project at Vigra. This included double-jointing, and the use of a camera and laser inspection of the root for the first time. 2010 First use of the Phased Array system for AUT inspection of carbon steel pipelines on Totals K5CU Project at its Vigra spoolbase. First use of Real-Time Digital Radiography on the Apache Bacchus bundled pipeline project at Wester fabrication site. First use of mechanised Cold Metal Transfer root-welding process on Danas Triton 10-inch dia pipeline, then lined with plastic pipe using the swagelining method. Weldlink connectors were NDTd using Real-Time Digital Radiography. First use of Real-Time Digital Radiography on the Centrica Ensign Project - the 2-inch pipeline scope at Vigra spoolbase. Opening of the Global Pipeline Welding Development Centre.
