Communication Communication is the process through which people and organizations accomplish objectives.

By communicating with others we share a common understanding of one anothers attitude, values, emotions, ambitions, wants and needs. According to Robins (pg299) communication fosters motivation by clarifying to employees what is to be done, how well they are doing, and what can be done to improve performance. Effective communication must therefore be present if organizations are to meet their goals and objectives effectively and efficiently. In the case there was clearly a lack of of communication as the production process was changed without the workers involvement. According to Plunkett and Attner change anywhere in a company can hurt or hinder communication. You must take time to describe your expectations to people because the more they know the more they will understand and they will be more willing to be part of the process. Mr. Goodman and the board of directors accepted Ms Bennetts proposal of redesigning the workers task by instituting a piecework system. This was done without the workers involvement and it led to a decrease in the level and quality of the work in the first shift. When employees are involved in decision making they are more willing to adapt to change for they will feel a sense of commitment, loyalty and trust to the organization because they were part of the process. This lack of communication caused constant complaints to be made over the new process as it was clearly stated that persons on the first shift did not like the changes. The changes gave Joe Bobb and the other workers the perception that the company had put the screws on them by implementing the piece work rates. Perception according to Robins(pg134) is a process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions to give meaning to their environment. Lack of communication also occurred when the company failed to inform the workers about methods of profit sharing and Norms position as supervisor of the second shift was not communicated to the workers and was therefore met with resentment. Also, Jim Flask was taken out of the regular production crew and reassigned as the shift set up man as a mechanic. This decision proved ineffective as there was a decrease in production. If the communication channels had been opened Jim Flask would have remained in his area of expertise and kept production up because staff deployment is critical to the proper functioning of any organization. These problems, if not rectified would continue to cause the morale of the firm to fall and loose its competitive edge in the market. There would also be a highturnover of staff as workers would continue to be frustrated. The company can use methods such as monthly staff meetings. Departmental meetings and suggestion boxes to establish a two way communication system which would then improve the quality of work, maintain a high level of production and an improvement in the morale of the employees.
