CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction Today, the Internet has made the world a global village in which one in a blink of an eye can reach out to someone in any other part of the world. The Internet is a global
system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve several billion users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support email, and peer-to-peer networks [1].

Importance of offering quality education is paramount, for many universities and colleges that are embattled in their quest to become more competitive. They provide quality education which deals with many variations of technologies that will help educators in teaching. Wi-Fi technology is becoming popular particularly in educational institutions. Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) is one of the most popular wireless networking technologies that use radio waves to provide wireless high-speed internet access and network connections [2]. Some of us from the third world countries have not fully deployed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in our education system for the purpose of teaching and learning. In cases where ICT facilities are available, high cost of these facilities are always problem. Even though, Mabini Colleges are often carried out using

this facilities specifically internet Wifi facilities. This study seeks to find out the role the Internet Wifi has played in improving the academic performance of Mabini Colleges students.

Statement of the Problem This study is conducted to determine the level of satisfaction of students in usage of Internet WIFI in Mabini Colleges. Specifically, it seeks to answer to following question: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: a. Age b. Gender c. Course d. Year Level e. Civil Status f. Socio-economics status? 2. What are the advantages of Internet WIFI to college students of Mabini Colleges? 3. What are the disadvantages of Internet WIFI to College students of Mabini Colleges? 4. What are the levels of satisfaction in usage of Internet WIFI of the students of Mabini Colleges? 5. What interventions program can be proposed to minimize the dissatisfactory in usage of Internet WIFI inside the campus?

Assumptions / Hypotheses This study is based on the following assumptions: 1. The profile of the respondents helps in attaining level of satisfactory of the students in using the internet WIFI in mabini colleges in terms of its affectivity. 2. Knowing the advantages of internet WIFI in Mabini Colleges can help to know the affectivity of the internet WIFI on the students. 3. Having the knowledge on the disadvantages of Internet WIFI on the students helps in determining its effectiveness of Internet WIFI in Mabini Colleges. 4. The level of satisfaction of the usage of Internet WIFI of students helps in determining its effectiveness. 5. There are intervention programs that can be proposed to minimize the dissatisfactory in usage of Internet WIFI inside the campus.

Scope and Delimitation This study focused on the usage of an internet Wifi of the students of Mabini Colleges inside the campus during School Year 2013-2014. The profiles of the respondents are students from different course, departments and year level. This study dealt on the profile of the students as to course, departments and year levels. The level of effectively of internet Wifi was measured in terms of the following: individuality, devices that they used and their specific location. In the end, it tried to propose enhancements of some devices that can improve the usage of internet Wifi inside the campus of Mabini Colleges.

Significance of the Study The findings of the study will be beneficial to the following people who are directly involved and affected in this study on the correlation of the individual usage of an internet wifi of the students at Mabini Colleges as well its effectively. Students. This study will guide and give them the idea on how effectively an internet Wifi inside the campus of Mabini Colleges. Teachers. This will give them the knowledge on how effectively an internet Wifi inside the campus of Mabini Colleges for them to decide if they will use it as a learning materials or resources for their teaching methods. Future Researchers. This research will be a venue for enriching their knowledge and will provide them with additional information have they wish to conduct a similar thesis or research.

Definition of Terms Internet - The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve several billion users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support email, and peer-to-peer networks. [3]

Wi-Fi - also spelled Wifi or WiFi, is a popular technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet wirelessly using radio waves. The WiFi Alliance defines Wi-Fi as any "wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards".[1] However, since most modern WLANs are based on these standards, the term "Wi-Fi" is used in general English as a synonym for "WLAN". Only Wi-Fi products that complete Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability certification testing successfully may use the "Wi-Fi CERTIFIED" trademark. [4] Internet Wifi - the Internet when within range of a wireless network which is configured to permit this. The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points called hotspots can extend from an area as small as a few rooms to as large as many square miles. Coverage in the larger area may require a group of access points with overlapping coverage. [5] Campus Wifi - Many traditional college campuses in the United States provide at least partial wireless Wi-Fi Internet coverage. Carnegie Mellon University built the first campus-wide wireless Internet network, called Wireless Andrew, at its Pittsburgh campus in 1993 before Wi-Fi branding originated. In Europe many universities collaborate in providing Wi-Fi access to students and staff through the eduroam international authentication infrastructure. [6]
