The church with heart in the heart of the city.

Just Around The Corner...

The Beginnings of Sunday School Englishman Robert Raikes, born in 1735, was a Christian layman who was pained to see unschooled children working six days a week in factories or mines. On Sundays, children roamed the streets, often getting into trouble. Most didnt know how to read or write and knew nothing about Christ or the church. As Raikes labored to reform Englands prison system, he noticed that many children were imprisoned, stirring him to action on their behalf. He arranged for halls and homes to be used for educational purposes on Sundays, the one day children didnt have to work. He found volunteers to teach reading, writing and math, as well as the Bible and Christian beliefs. The first Sunday school class was held in July 1780. Amazingly, by 1788 some 250,000 children were attending such schools. This occurred despite some peoples opposition to the education of lower-class children. Countless boys and girls have attended Sunday school classes since then, thanks to Raikes, who brought Christs light and love to children around the world. The Newsletter Newsletter

Be a lively Christian (worth reposting, so we did) A man once told a pastor that he wanted to become a member of the church. "But," he said, "I'm very busy, so don't ask me to join a committee, teach a class or sing in the choir. Spare me from anything that would take up my time, and don't be surprised if I'm not in worship very often." The pastor thought for a moment, and then replied, "I believe you're at the wrong church. The church you're looking for is 10 blocks down the street." The man followed the pastor's directions and soon came to an abandoned, boarded-up church building. It was a dead church - out of business. May each of us always be alive to the ministry of the Lord's church. Remember that lively Christians make churches that are alive.

BIBLE QUESTION Around 450 years before Jesus, the prophet Nehemiah heard some bad news about conditions in Jerusalem. The city still lay in ruins following an invasion by the Babylonian army many years before. The news caused Nehemiah to sit down and cry. After mourning for days, he felt that he should lead men to rebuild the wall and gates around Jerusalem. He organized a work force and, despite some opposition, they rebuilt the wall. A well-known verse describes the accomplishment: So we rebuilt the wall, and all the wall was joined together to half its height; for the people had a mind to ________. Choose the correct ending to the statement: A. be protected B. work C. serve D. live (Look in Nehemiah 4:6, NRSV))
