Dr.

Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Trunk and Treat Reconsidered
Anyone who has been with me for longer than a minute can attest that I am not perfect not even close. I have also learned that all of us have breakdowns in communication. Even as a pastor, I sometimes fall into the category created by the Paul Newman character in Cool Hand Luke: What we have here is a failure to communicate. Someone described what he called the five most important words: You did a good job. The four most important words he said are, What is your opinion. The three most important words he said are, Lets work together. The two most important words are, Thank you. The single most important word is We. That is good advice on a human level. Of course, from a biblical perspective about communication, this is a far better list. In terms of the number of words try these: I was wrong, forgive melets pray about itIll reconsider itHis willHim. While I was away in Colorado, I was troubled by an earlier decision which we had made concerning Trunk and Treat by scheduling it on a Wednesday evening. My communication to the staff was to cancel that and to reconsider the best way to minister to our children during the fall. The message was communicated of a complete cancellation of a Halloween alternative. Parents and children, forgive me for speaking rashly. I shared with our staff a week ago that I believe we should have a special activity on Halloween Night, particularly as an alternative to the world and the devils holiday and an opportunity to reach kids in our community. I did not feel that enough of them would come out in costume on a Wednesday, even though that would coincide with our other activities. I also felt that we should not cancel in mid-stride our vibrant mid-week ministries. Of course, this will require extra work, but I hope that you will see Thursday evening as an opportunity to invite unsaved and unchurched children and their families to our campus. It will be a fun time for all and glorify God. I thank God for the patience, flexibility, and leadership of our staff. Please understand when we sometimes reconsider and reschedule. I want our mode of operation to be open to change if necessary. I want us to pray that we will be able to report all things that God has done and how He has opened a door of faith (Acts 14:27). We want to preach the gospel and make many disciples among our children, strengthening and encouraging them to continue in the faith (Acts 14:21, 22). Having no relation with the occult is one way to do this (Leviticus 19:26, 31). Yes, we will minister to our children in the best way that we can!
